Arizona Sheriff: Illegal Alien Crime Is Getting Worse

In a Newsmax interview, Sheriff Larry Dever of Cochise County refuted claims of the administration that the border is secure.

Dever said he was speaking out because President Obama’s recent assertions of border safety were not accurate according to the sheriff’s ground-level experience.

As well as appearing on tv, the internet (an interview with Hot Air) and the radio (John and Ken Show, 10 minutes in), Dever also authored an opinion piece that was printed in the New York Times.

Abandoned on the Border, New York Times, May 12, 2011

THIS week President Obama toured the Southwest, in part to promote what he claims are federal advances in border security. But he has said little about the lawsuits by his administration and the American Civil Liberties Union against Arizona’s immigration law, passed just over a year ago but still unenforced, thanks to a federal injunction.

The law requires law enforcement to check the immigration status of anyone arrested for a crime if there is reasonable suspicion that the person is in this country illegally; it also allows them to cite illegal immigrants for failing to carry documents required under federal law, whether they’ve committed a crime or not.

As the fight over the law, Senate Bill 1070, carries on — Gov. Jan Brewer has petitioned the Supreme Court to hear the case — violent crime rooted in unchecked illegal immigration continues to spread here in southern Arizona. It makes me wonder if the lawyers, judges and politicians involved grasp what it is like to be a law enforcement officer on the Mexican border.

As sheriff of Cochise County I am responsible, along with my 86 deputies, for patrolling 83.5 miles of that border, as well as the 6,200 square miles of my county to the north of it — an area more than four times the size of Long Island. Continue reading this article

CNN Observes Worsening Muslim Alienation from Mainstream America

According to CNN, disaffection among Muslims residing in America is growing, and that’s a bad thing. But when you read the network’s own description of one instance, it’s clear that the local Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) representative was stirring the pot to foment that alienation. If the Muslim congregation didn’t know about the Peter King hearings investigating domestic radicalization, then CAIR guy Dawud Walid was there to provide the Muslims-as-victims spin.

As terror analyst Walid Phares noted last fall, “According to open-source reports, between 2001 and 2008, U.S. agencies stopped one or two terror attempts a year. However, from 2009 until today, the government has been uncovering one or two cases a month, a troubling growth in jihadi activities.”

So Islamic terror diversity is on a definite upswing in America, yet all we citizens hear from Muslims is complaining about bogus Islamophobia. It is not reassuring from a national security viewpoint that the public conversation is about citizens’ alleged cruelty toward Islam followers, even though the people believe otherwise: Rasmussen Poll: Just 17% Think Muslims Are Mistreated.

Polls indicate that Americans are growing increasingly distrustful of Muslims in our midst as we become more familiar with them and their beliefs. Pew determined that the public’s favorable view of Islam fell 11 points from 2005 to 2010, from 41 percent to 30.

A Time poll from last August found 61 percent objected to the Ground Zero mosque. A Gallup survey prior to the King hearings showed 52 percent agreed that the investigation was appropriate.

Not all cultures are compatible. Muslims would be low on the list of easily assimilable immigrants with their high-decibel rejection of western values like secular law, gender equality, free speech and reason over power. Washington would be wise to end Muslim immigration for national security reasons, if nothing else.

CNN is unfortunately carrying water for America’s enemies, as exemplified by its recent news special, “Unwelcome: The Muslims Next Door” [Watch], which the New English Review called “too sympathetic and biased.” But CNN does at least draw attention here to CAIR acting as a fifth-column enterprise, even if CNN did so inadvertently. That’s the best you can say.

In key American Muslim enclave, alienation is growing, CNN, March 27, 2011

Madison Heights, Michigan (CNN) – Dawud Walid asked the worshipers for a show of hands: How many had heard about the Muslim radicalization hearings in Washington earlier that day?

About half of the 50 or so Muslims in the banquet hall-turned-mosque indicated that they had.

So Walid, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations’ Michigan chapter, briefed the other half about the hearing, calling it an “unfortunate first in American history.”

Then he went further, warning about what he said were a handful of growing threats to American Muslims.

“As we approach the 10th anniversary of September 11, we are seeing unprecedented acts of Islamophobia,” Walid told the worshipers at the American Islamic Community Center, 10 miles north of Detroit.

“After 9/11, it was coming from a few right-wingers,” he said. “But now, in 2011, we’re seeing it from Congress.”

Walid went on to tell the congregation that a dozen states – from Georgia to Missouri to New Mexico – are considering bans on Sharia, or Islamic law, and warned that such bans could lead to prohibitions on women wearing the hijab, or headscarf, and even on Muslims worshiping Allah.

“Praying five times a day is Sharia,” he said. “Do you go to jail for that?”

As usual, Muslims think they are innocent little lambs who have done nothing to deserve the suspicion with which Americans regard them!

As one of the largest and oldest Muslim enclaves in the nation – and, with its century-old ties to Ford Motor Co., one that’s intimately bound up in the modern American story – the metro Detroit community is perhaps as close as one can get to the soul of American Islam.

At a time when the country is wrestling with its views on Islam, the faith causes relatively little friction in the largely Arab cocoon of southeast Michigan.

But narratives playing out in the national media, from the radicalization hearings spearheaded by New York Republican Rep. Peter King to the wave of proposed Sharia bans to anticipation of the September 11 anniversary, have left many Muslims here feeling ostracized in their own country.

If asked, many Americans might fear that jihadists would attempt an attack on the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. The authorities will be on high alert, that’s for sure. But Muslims are worried about their little feelings being hurt.

The community is growing more defensive in the face of what many here say is a national climate of suspicion reminiscent of the period immediately after the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Continue reading this article

Recipients of Victim Visas Mount Up

Across the pond in Great Britain, attention is being paid to the growing popularity of the U Visa, which rewards alleged victims of crime in the United States. Britain is famous for its generous welfare (like enormous mansions!) parceled out to often underserving foreigners, so they may have extra simpatico on the subject.

Illegal aliens who claim they were mugged or otherwise harmed can get the keys to the kingdom, an open door for them and their entire families.

Naturally, such an attractive goodie is a major magnet for fraud, and the category includes many who might be eligible. What alien hasn’t been ripped off or injured by one of their reprobate associates? One hundred percent of that group has already broken the law by their illegal entrance, so what’ s little thievery among friends?

And even if the crime experience is genuine, how is that a reason for American citizenship? A black eye should not be more valuable than a college degree. Patch the person up and politely deport after they have testified in court.

On the other side, citizen victims of illegal alien criminals get nothing from the government and are often ignored by the press.

For more details, see my 2007 article Victim Visas—How America Stupidly Rewards Misfortune and Fraud.

The ‘crime visa’: How 18,000 illegal immigrants got legal status by being the victim of a crime, Daily Mail, March 20, 2011

More than 18,000 illegal immigrants, plus 14,000 of their relatives, have gained U.S. visas under a new law since 2009 because they were victims of crime.

While many immigrants may still be unaware of the U visa, word is spreading fast in some communities.

The controversial rules state that if you are a victim of crime and you cooperate, or are ‘helpful’ with authorities, then you stand a good chance of getting a U visa.

Since 2009, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) has issued 18,654 and rejected 5,639 U visas — a 77 per cent approval rate.

Congress has put a ceiling on the number available annually at 10,000 and this year the USCIS looks on course easily to reach that figure, having received 3,331 applications in the first quarter.

Supporters of the visa says it helps in fighting crime. All too often crimes ranging from robbery and domestic violence to rape and murder have gone unreported because the victims were in the U.S. illegally.

The visa rewards people who may have worked hard, they say, and it helps keep families united because relatives of the crime victim can also get the papers saying they can stay in America.

Critics of the visa say it has created a legal minefield that is being increasingly played out in courtrooms across the country.

They also argue that it is wrong to be writing out so many visas at a time when so many Americans cannot get a job.

Both sides would agree on the curious irony that what could be the worst thing to happen to you, being a crime victim in a land where you are trying to stay under the radar, could actually turn out to be the best thing that could happen to you. Continue reading this article

Tea Is Sweet: Senator Hatch Moves to Axe Diversity Visas

A few years back, Senator Orrin Hatch presented himself as the compassionate conservative, with his promotion of the DREAM Act stealth amnesty for alien kiddies. In fact, he was an early adopter of the legislation and introduced the bill on the Senate floor in 2003.

Now he is looking at a more Tea-infused political landscape with re-election looming in 2012, particularly after his Utah colleague Bob Bennett was knocked out by a conservative primary challenger last year. So Senator Hatch has been playing up his conservative cred, saying he was a Tea Party sorta guy before it was cool. (And he regrets his vote for the TARP bailout, as he told the CPAC audience Friday.)

Below, Tea Partiers in Boston

So Hatch’s bill to end the Diversity Visa is not entirely surprising, but it is indicative of the new requirement of appealing to pro-sovereignty voters. A 2010 CBS-New York Times poll showed that 82 percent of Tea Party persons “think that illegal immigration is very serious problem” compared with 72 percent of Republicans.

Of course, the Diversity Visa has been long overdue to be put down, given its welcome mat for fraud, terrorists and unpleasant diversity.

Sen. Hatch’s Proposal to End the Diversity Visa Program, Center for Immigration Studies, February 10, 2011

The Diversity Visa (DV) Program is an unfortunate blind spot in our immigration system that has outlived its purpose. The applicants for these 50,000 “lottery” immigration slots require few skills. Qualifications nor identity can be properly vetted. The program does not know, really, who these applicants are nor their true purpose in coming to the United States. The program is a national security loophole, and has been used by terrorists and organized criminals to not only enter the U.S., but bring others to the U.S. as well.

According to unofficial statements from the State Department, the program is wrought with fraud in part because application standards are so low. The program claims to have strict eligibility requirements, but only calls for a high school education or its equivalent or two years of work experience within the past five years in an occupation requiring at least two years’ training or experience. In most of the countries eligible for a diversity visa, neither education nor work experience can be verified, let alone identity. Consular officers in U.S. embassies abroad thus spend an inordinate amount of time attempting to determine if a person is who they say they are and actually qualifies for the program. Checking watch lists based on names or prior U.S. immigration histories thus often has little bearing on making a solid determination on identity, qualifications, or legitimate national security concerns.

National Security Concerns Associated with the DV Program
Looking closely at the worldwide distribution of visa “lottery” winners from the most recent compilation of statistics by the State Department, almost the entire world is represented in the near 50,000 visas issued in 2009. What is perhaps most troublesome is that the low threshold of requirements to obtain a diversity visa and the wide breadth of foreign nations eligible for DVs means that foreign nationals from states sponsors of terror, states with terrorists operating within their borders that threaten U.S. national security, and struggling third world nations whose citizenry include economic migrants with few skills and no means to support themselves upon arrival, all are issued visas annually through the program.

Of the 186 foreign states represented in the State Department’s 2009 catalogue of actual diversity program visas issued, Iran — a designated state sponsor of terror since January 19, 1984 and the country with one of the longest, most tangled and unnerving terrorist resumes in the world — received 1,117 visas or adjustments of status (for those winning the lottery but already living in the U.S.). Thus, Iran was the third largest recipient of DVs amongst the 34 nations in Asia that also obtained DVs. Iran is known for its active security forces that seek infiltration abroad; support terrorist acts around the world (the 9/11 Commission made clear that Iran was involved to some degree in supporting the nineteen 9/11 hijackers); provide training and financial support for Hezbollah; and currently harbor Al Qaida. The United States has admitted more than once that our nation has little visibility into the actual terrorist on-goings of Iran on a day-to-day basis. Yet, the DV program provided Iran with the 12th largest number of DV visas in 2009, placing Iran in the top four percent of all DVs granted in 2009. There is a possibility that amongst those Iranians obtaining legal permanent residence through their DVs are those who do not support the United States, or perhaps worse. Washington Post Throws Gasoline on Muslim Fears

Shame on the Washington Post for whipping up fear among Muslims who reside in America. It has a front-page shriek-fest today, aimed at blaming Americans. The layout portrays Muslims as poor little victims, suffering from the cruelty of meanie citizens — which is a Big Lie.

You would think there was no problem with so-called home-grown terrorism from Muslim immigrants. In 2009, the Senate Homeland Security Committee considered the topic in a hearing titled “Violent Islamist Extremism: al-Shabaab Recruitment in America.” Although the hearing wasn’t exactly hard hitting, but it did broach the subject.

I was hoping for sterner stuff from Rep. Peter King as the new chairman of the House committee, but he has apparently succumbed to political pressures.

National Geographic showed its documentary Inside 9/11: War on America yesterday, and the film is a good reminder that Muslims were plotting to murder thousands of Americans in seditious mosques while living in our neighborhoods. Not every Muslim immigrant is a murderous jihadist, but their communities are the ocean in which the killers swim.

Why continue to welcome Muslims as immigrants? Is Islamic diversity worth a nuked American city sometime in the future?

Anyway, the Post is now vying with the New York Times for position as top dhimmi publication, fawning in weakness toward hostile Islam. What do Muslims fear? So-called hate crimes against Muslims are a tiny fraction of those committed, according to the most recent FBI report. McClatchy’s headline was Hate crimes against Muslims rare, FBI data shows, indicating the whole Islamophobia hysteria is nonexistent, a media creation of CAIR and other fifth-column friends of jihad.

And if there were a genuine “panic” among Muslims residing in the United States concerning “Islamophobia,” they would be packing up to leave for the welcoming ummah lands. Wouldn’t they?

(You can contact the Post ombudsman at ombudsman@washpost.com.)

Hearings on Muslims trigger panic, Washington Post, January 24, 2011

WESTBURY, N.Y. – They called it a summit to teach Muslims how to fight prejudice and fear. But all day long, fear was inescapable in the fluorescent-lit meeting hall of the Long Island mosque.

The top issue on everyone’s mind this month at the Islamic Center of Long Island was this: What could be done to stop planned congressional hearings on alleged hidden radicalism among American Muslims and mosques?

The House hearings, scheduled to begin next month, have touched off a wave of panic throughout the U.S. Muslim community, which has spent much of the past year battling what it sees as a rising tide of Islamophobia. Conference calls, strategy sessions and letter-writing campaigns have been launched. Angry op-eds have compared the congressional inquiry to McCarthyism and the World War II persecution of Japanese Americans.

Ahem. The past year (or two) has seen a rising tide of Islamic terrorist attacks against Americans: the Fort Hood mass murder, the would-be Dallas bomber, the would-be Brooklyn subway bomber, the would-be Times Square bomber, and the would-be Portland bomber spring to mind.

And honor killings in Arizona and New York.

The American people do not believe the myth of “Islamophobia” in the face of overwhelming evidence of Islamic plots against us. It’s not a phobia when they really are trying to kill citizens.

But for those who gathered at the Long Island mosque, the coming hearings represented not just a political issue, but a personal one. For the man organizing the hearings was the very lawmaker who was supposed to represent them in Washington – Rep. Peter T. King (R-N.Y.). Long before he had become their enemy, he had been one of their community’s closest friends.

“He used to come to our weddings. He ate dinner in our homes,” said the mosque’s chairman, Habeeb Ahmed, a short medical technologist with graying hair sitting near the front. “Everything just changed suddenly after 9/11, and now he’s holding hearings to say that people like us are radical extremists. I don’t understand it.”

At the meeting that day, Ahmed, a 55-year-old immigrant from India, was surrounded by more than a hundred Muslim leaders from New York and beyond.

There were Sunnis and Shiites. There were doctors, engineers and pharmacists who had left Pakistan, Indonesia and Bangladesh to remake their lives in the United States. There were African Americans who had embraced Islam decades ago and new converts who were learning what it meant to be Muslim in America. Continue reading this article

Napolitano Won’t Release DHS Report on Nun Killer’s Non-Deportation

Didn’t Obama and company promise more openness and transparency in government?

That’s easier said than done, particularly in the arena of immigration enforcement, where the administration claims increased arrests and deportations of criminals (while ignoring the job-thievery aspect). Having illegal alien crime under control, along with border security, is understood to be a prerequisite to get a mass amnesty out of Congress.

Today’s example of the Obama administration acting against the safety of Americans concerns the death of nun Sister Denise Mosier at the hands of a drunk-driving illegal alien, a crime that got national attention because of the victim.

The accused killer, Carlos Montano, slammed head-on into the nun’s car, in his third drunk-driving incident in five years. He had twice been slated for deportation but somehow was released onto public streets. The notoriety of the case forced DHS head Janet Napolitano to investigate the screw-up.

The truth is that DHS has never taken drunk driving seriously, because the crime is so common. Inebriated driving is actually considered a desirable macho attribute in hispanic culture. If every drunk driving illegal alien were required to be deported, it would take up more resources than the government is willing to expend on public safety.

The Obama bunch say they are “prioritizing” deportations to repatriate the worst criminals first. That’s a reasonable strategy, but drunk-driving illegal aliens endanger all Americans, because everyone travels the roadways and navigates crosswalks. The government’s lack of seriousness is evident in this case, and all the others.

Clearly, the results of Napolitano’s investigation must be really damning, since it is being quashed.

DHS withholds probe into Prince William drunk driver who killed nun, Washington Post, October 12, 2010

The Obama administration will not release the results of an investigation into why an illegal immigrant with two drunk driving convictions went almost two years without a deportation hearing before a crash that killed a Virginia nun, a senior official said.

Carlos Martinelly-Montano, 23, who entered the country illegally from Bolivia as a child, is accused of killing Sister Denise Mosier, 66, and injuring two other Benedictine nuns while driving drunk in Prince William County on Aug. 1.

The furor over the way Martinelly-Montano’s case was handled by Immigration and Customs Enforcement prompted the agency’s boss, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, to announce an investigation.

“Why is it that this individual was driving?” Napolitano asked at a news conference Aug. 2, one day after the accident on Bristow Road. “He was in the removal process. Why did the removal process take so long?”

The inquiry is complete, but Homeland Security does not plan to make the results public, according to the senior official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the matter.

“It’s a document that includes law enforcement sensitivities, so it will not be made public,” the official said. He declined to discuss the nature of those sensitivities.

The sensitivity being protected is incompetence.

Crime Victim Dad Tells His Story about Open Borders’ Terrible Cost

Thanks to Ray Tranchant for speaking out as the father of teenager killed in a crash caused by an illegal alien. The public hears too little about the crime victims of unlawful foreigners; the liberal press prefers to swoon over foreign perps and their sufferings in pursuit of a “better life” rather than consider the human tragedies caused by open borders.

The Obama administration insists that it is prioritizing its immigration enforcement to go after the dangerous foreigners first, which sounds reasonable enough. But the August 1 death of Sister Denise Mosier from a crash with a previously arrested drunk-driving illegal alien showed the system is still as criminal-friendly as ever.

The accused killer, Bolivian Carlos Montano, had earlier been handed over to ICE for deportation (twice!) but instead was released onto American streets. He had spent 20 days in jail for two drunk-driving convictions, so was clearly a bad crash waiting to happen. An obviously dangerous illegal alien was released with deadly consequences.

It’s a tale of malfeasance that is all too familiar to Ray Tranchant: Alfredo Ramos, the alien later found guilty of killing Tessa Tranchant and her friend Alison Kunhardt, had been convicted twice of alcohol-related crimes but was not deported.

After My Daughter’s Death — A Father’s View of the Immigration Debate, By Ray Tranchant, Fox News, August 11, 2010

My 16-year-old daughter, Tessa, was killed by an illegal immigrant in Virginia Beach three years ago while sitting at a stop light. Her friend Ali Kunhardt, 17, also perished instantly. […]

Alfredo Ramos, a previous DUI offender and alcoholic, seemed invisible in a system that was good at looking the other way. Virginia Beach and Chesapeake were being accused of being “sanctuary cities” as Bill O’Reilly and Geraldo Rivera screamed at each other during the national news hour. O’Reilly was right.

I know what sanctuary means more than most ever will.

Ramos was actually smug at the trial and took his lumps: 40 years in prison. There was nothing I could do but forgive him; forgiveness cleanses the soul. He was an uneducated foreigner patronized by local merchants who needed cheap labor.

Hundreds of thousands of illegals in Virginia do the same. We don’t share a border with Mexico, so the awareness here isn’t as great as Arizona or California.

But the dilemma in Arizona is more important to Virginians than it seems. Last Monday, Sister Denise Mosier was killed in Prince William County. An illegal immigrant from Bolivia with two previous drunken-driving convictions is charged with killing her and critically injuring two other nuns while driving drunk.

As with me, her friends say they have forgiven him and hold no grudges.

Later in the week, in response to this tragedy, the Secretary of Homeland Security said she would get to the bottom of why the illegals are not deported when they are repeat offenders.

Here’s what I would like to tell the Secretary: Ms. Napolitano, ICE was not there in 2007 when my daughter and her friend died. And, though ICE picked up the man who hit Sister Mosier, he wasn’t kept in custody and was sent back out the streets.

This problem is not new.

We know it’s not the people but the system that fails Americans again and again. There have been hundreds of similar stories in America since Tess and Ali died.

Rep. Luis Gutierrez from Illinois reminded me personally in a Congressional hearing that the solution lies with a comprehensive plan that includes amnesty. After all, he said, “they pick your grapes, clean your hotels and are then victimized.” Luis should worry about protecting U.S. Hispanics and instead of counting on prospective Hispanic votes.

But waving a magic wand over 12 million people will not solve this immigration problem. It worries me that we would even consider giving foreigners legal rights to Social Security, health care and school in a time of $14 trillion dollar deficits.

Consider that when 12 million get citizenship, 10 million of their relatives will migrate legally. Of course citizenship will make them pay into the system, but the amount won’t be realized for many years.

I don’t believe the current system can process this many people and verify that some are not criminals or terrorists, let alone pay benefits to new Americans.

ICE to Reveal Alien Criminal Stats in Prince William County (or So It Says)

On August 1, a previously arrested drunk-driving illegal alien killed a nun, Denise Mosier (pictured left), and seriously injured two others. The alien, Carlos Martinelly Montano (pictured right), had twice been handed over to ICE for deportation, but had instead been released into the community pending a deportation hearing (occasions which have notably poor attendance among those invited).

A few days later, the Chairman of the Prince William County board of supervisors, Corey Stewart requested information from ICE that would reveal how many illegal aliens are being released by the agency into the county and their crimes.

The rather surprising news is that ICE has agreed:

ICE Agrees to Release Illegal Immigrant Data to Virginia Official, Fox News, August 7, 2010

“ICE contacted me this morning, with great news for Prince William County citizens. They have agreed to release to Prince William County the identities and final disposition of every convicted criminal illegal alien apprehended in Prince William County, Virginia and turned over to ICE through the county’s 287(g) partnership,” Stewart said in a statement.

Stewart said his county’s police referred Carlos Martinelly Montano for deportation twice in the past after he served sentences for drunk driving convictions. But immigration officials released Montano, who allegedly killed Sister Denise Mosier and injured two other nuns in the Aug. 1 accident, on his own recognizance pending a deportation hearing.

“Regardless of which side of the aisle you’re on, or on this issue, we can all agree that if you are an illegal alien and you’ve committed a crime, that you should be deported afterward,” Stewart told Fox News on Friday. “But this guy had been twice handed over to immigration officials and twice released back into the community even though there was an immigration detainer on him. And of course he’s gone right back out and committed the same crime and killed a nun.”

This is good news if true. Dependable illegal alien crime statistics are normally hard to find and squishy. The government has routinely covered up, lied about and obfuscated the degree to which predatory foreign criminals have had their way in easy-going America. Authorities like to say they are pursuing the real bad guys, but recent history is replete with multiple cases of dangerous aliens arrested and released without being deported, with tragic results. (One crime that comes to mind is the preventable deaths of Tennesseeans Sean and Donna Wilson at the hands of a drunk-driving illegal who had been arrested 14 times without being deported.)

Some information about illegal alien crime is available, but mostly in limited quantities for local jurisdictions. For example in 2008 the Houston Chronicle did a fine investigative series on alien crime from researching the Harris County records of arrests and releases. The use of 287(g) which checks the status of arrested persons makes the number of aliens arrested available.

A recently released stat from ICE’s home office is that 120,000 criminal aliens have been deported in the last three years,/a>. That number is only 40,000 per year, and doesn’t count the crimes or classify them regarding violence and deaths. What’s needed is a true picture of the mayhem resulting from open borders and inadequate immigration law enforcement. Of course, all working aliens are job thieves (and may use a stolen Social Security number, a felony), which is not an insignificant crime during this employment depression.

Statistics are lifeless artifacts, which is why I have focused on the individual stories of crime victims for ImmigrationsHumanCost.org, but numeric information is required to develop adequate enforcement policy.

Anyway, the video below has more about Supervisor Stewart’s success in getting ICE to reveal local statistics, particularly the number of dangerous foreigners released instead of deported. Obviously the death of Sister Denise Mosier indicates the Obama gang is no more serious about criminal alien enforcement than previous administrations.

Sanctuary Policy Criticized — Weakly

When the press presents the objections of citizens to sanctuary cities, it certainly doesn’t use the strongest arguments.

Immigrant ‘sanctuaries’ rouse opponents’ wrath, LA Times, July 25, 2010

Reporting from Washington — Critics of the Obama administration’s decision to sue Arizona over its new law to control illegal immigration accuse the government of overlooking a more obvious target: the dozens of cities that called themselves a “sanctuary” for immigrants.

“Everyone has noticed the hypocrisy of the government going after Arizona and ignoring the sanctuary cities,” said Bob Dane, a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform. “They have it exactly backwards. Arizona is applying federal law, and sanctuary cities are violating it.”

Justice Department lawyers on Thursday asked a judge in Phoenix to block Arizona’s law from going into effect on the grounds it interferes with federal immigration policy. The law is due to take effect in the coming week.

The Justice Department lawyers say the government wants to catch and deport criminal immigrants, but it does not wish to take custody of hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who are otherwise abiding by the law.

Right, as if unlawfully occupying American jobs and using stolen Social Security numbers (a felony) makes the aliens “otherwise abiding by the law.”

But worse than that is the threat to public safety when the most violent foreign criminals are treated like privileged characters, which is what happens in sanctuary cities.

Heather MacDonald explained how the policy is seriously hazardous to public safety by allowing known criminals to roam free:

The Illegal-Alien Crime Wave, City-Journal, Winter 2004

LAPD officers recognize illegal deported gang members all the time—flashing gang signs at court hearings for rival gangbangers, hanging out on the corner, or casing a target. These illegal returnees are, simply by being in the country after deportation, committing a felony (in contrast to garden-variety illegals on their first trip to the U.S., say, who are only committing a misdemeanor). “But if I see a deportee from the Mara Salvatrucha [Salvadoran prison] gang crossing the street, I know I can’t touch him,” laments a Los Angeles gang officer. Only if the deported felon has given the officer some other reason to stop him, such as an observed narcotics sale, can the cop accost him—but not for the immigration felony.

The most important argument against alien sanctuary is the increasing list of crime victims, including Los Angeles high school football star Jamiel Shaw (shown) who was killed by an illegal alien gangster one day after the criminal was released from jail without being deported.

In 2008, San Francisco father Tony Bologna and his two sons were murdered by an illegal alien gangster with a record of violence who was similarly allowed back on the street without being deported.

There are other cases of Americans being killed in preventable crimes — many by previously arrested drunk driving illegal aliens. Sadly, the MSM is incapable of connecting the dots of causality.

There is NO evidence that illegals speak up with evidence against criminals, which is the bogus reason given by many sanctuary supporters; the policy is promoted because the open-borders extremists do NOT care that the program helps violent criminals to stay and commit more crimes against innocent citizens. To them, open borders is an issue that supercedes the rule of law.

Victim Visas Are Ba-a-a-a-ck

In 2007, I wrote about one of Washington’s more idiotic immigration programs: Victim Visas—How America Stupidly Rewards Misfortune and Fraud.

The policy is yet another example of how immigration is an upside-down universe of reversed values, rules and behavior; where lawbreaking is rewarded and citizens who demand laws be enforced are accused of racism. The government will not protect citizens from foreign predators who enter our open borders by the thousands, but illegal alien victims get the red carpet treatment.

Now the Victim Visa program has re-awakened under the Obama administration after a few years of relative somnolence: this year’s quota has been filled, and immigration lawyers are demanding an unlimited number of Victim Visas because the attorneys sense another strategy to ship mass numbers of lawbreaking aliens into American communities.

All 10,000 crime victim visas issued, AP, July 15, 2010

The government has issued all 10,000 visas available this year for immigrant crime victims who help authorities investigate and prosecute perpetrators.

The last of this fiscal year’s supply of visas was approved Thursday morning, marking the first time the government has hit the statutory “U” visa limit since the program became active two years ago.

The visas were created as part of the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000. They are given to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and other crimes in exchange for cooperation with law enforcement.

In 2007, attorneys for immigrants who had been victims of crime sued the federal government for failing to issue any visas. Only 52 were issued in 2008. About 6,000 applications were approved last fiscal year.

Alejandro Mayorkas, director of Citizenship and Immigration Services, said that an increased focus on U visa processing, as well as increased outreach and resources to crime victims groups and law enforcement, have contributed to increased applications.

“We will not turn our attention away from victims of crime,” Mayorkas said.

Another 10,000 visas will be available in October, when the 2011 fiscal year begins. Until then, the federal government can grant interim legal status to non-citizens whose applications are approved for the visas so they can work.

Most visas are given to people not allowed to be in the country, but some are given to people with some sort of permission to be in the U.S.

Crystal Williams, president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, said she is pleased the government “has turned its own situation on U visas around so thoroughly.”

“I hope this shows that the years of benign neglect of this visa are behind us,” she said.

The milestone highlights challenges law enforcement officers face in investigating and prosecuting crimes involving mostly illegal immigrants. Many are too afraid of deportation to report crimes. Critics of a new Arizona immigration law fear the law may affect immigrants’ willingness to assist law enforcement.

The use of all 10,000 visas indicates the visa’s efficacy to law enforcement, said Gail Pendleton, co-director for ASISTA, a group that advises the Justice Department’s Office of Violence Against Women.

The next step is for Congress to eliminate the 10,000 limit, which Williams called a self-defeating quota.

The re-energizing of this portal for illegal aliens (“Most visas are given to people not allowed to be in the country”) is an indicator of the left’s infatuation with victimhood, particularly of third world persons (although the activists’ concern does not extend to the the crime victims of illegal aliens). Immigration lawyers get to feel generous, but the program adds thousands more onto the welfare rolls at a time when states can hardly afford to import more poverty.

There are no statistics given for the home countries or educational levels of those receiving Victim Visas, but it is likely they are mostly young and uneducated. The number of sex workers is not mentioned, but the program is part of an anti-trafficking law, so the skill set of some recipients was learned at massage parlors.

For an actual case study, see the San Francisco Chronicle‘s 2006 series Diary of a Sex Slave which ends “happily” with the victim remaining in the city on a T-1 trafficking visa rather than being deported home to Korea. Such is the diversity we are supposed to celebrate uncritically.

Illegal Alien’s Hit-and-Run Crash Kills Wisconsin Woman

It’s an all-too-familiar story: a previously arrested drunk-driving illegal alien has killed another innocent American.

Frank and Dawn Glogovsky (pictured), along with their 13-year-old son, were driving home from a family gathering when their car was struck by Jorge Dominguez after he ran a stop sign. (The obituary noted that Frank and Dawn were childhood sweethearts and married in 1988.)

All three members of the family were taken by emergency medical personnel to a hospital, but Dawn died there.

Burlington man charged in fatal crash is illegal immigrant, the Journal Times, June 3, 2010

A Burlington man who allegedly caused a fatal car crash Monday while intoxicated is an illegal immigrant who was driving with a suspended license and has served jail time in Racine County for several prior offenses, officials said Thursday.

Because the man is an illegal immigrant, he likely should not have had a drivers license at all and should have previously been turned over to U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement officials for possible deportation after completing his sentences in Racine County, officials said.

ICE officials Thursday confirmed that the man, Jorge Dominguez, 38, is an illegal immigrant. Dominguez, of 544 Chestnut Drive in Burlington, was charged Wednesday with seven criminal offenses including homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle for a crash Monday around 11 p.m. when he allegedly ran a stop sign at the intersection of highways 45 and N in the Town of Paris, killing 45-year-old Dawn Glogovsky and injuring her husband and son, all of the Paris area. […]

Dominguez has been in and out of the Racine County Jail since 2008, serving sentences for past criminal offenses including battery, cocaine possession and obstructing an officer. When local police or sheriffs’ departments arrest an illegal immigrant like Dominguez for such criminal charges, they are supposed to inform ICE, which will place a detainer hold on that individual so that when they are released they go to ICE for possible deportation, said Carl Rusnok, ICE spokesman.

So Dominguez was clearly a dangerous criminal illegal alien, and was jailed in Racine County with an immigration hold put on him, yet he was released into America rather than deported after time served.

The Fox News report (Illegal Immigrant Charged in Fatal Crash) also questioned why he was free, instead of being repatriated.

“Gentle” Mexico Unmasked

What sweet timing that a report of human rights abuses against Central Americans as they transit Mexico was just published. Mexico has been working itself into a tizzy of self-indulgent rage against the impudence of Arizonans for enacting crackdown legislation, and just issued travel warnings for its precious citizens when they approach the state. Mexico’s Presidente Calderon sniffily condemned Arizona’s act of self-preservation, saying “Criminalising immigration, which is a social and economic phenomenon, this way opens the door to intolerance, hate, discrimination and abuse in law enforcement.”

(Hint to El Presidente: many Americans are becoming tired of pushy Mexicans thinking they can just waltz into our country whenever they want. Mexicans have a nation of their own and are welcome to remain in it.)

Thank you, Amnesty International!

Mexico acknowledges migrant abuse, pledges changes, AP, April 28, 2010

Amnesty International called the abuse of migrants in Mexico a major human rights crisis Wednesday, and accused some officials of turning a blind eye or even participating in the kidnapping, rape and murder of migrants.

The group’s report comes at a sensitive time for Mexico, which is protesting the passage of a law in Arizona that criminalizes undocumented migrants.

The Interior Department acknowledged in a statement that the mainly Central American migrants who pass through Mexico on their way to the United States suffer abuses, but attributed the problem to criminal gangs branching out into kidnapping and extortion of migrants.

Rupert Knox, Amnesty’s Mexico researcher, said in the report that the failure by authorities to tackle abuses against migrants has made their trip through Mexico one of the most dangerous in the world.

“Migrants in Mexico are facing a major human rights crisis leaving them with virtually no access to justice, fearing reprisals and deportation if they complain of abuses,” Knox said.

Central American migrants are frequently pulled off trains, kidnapped en masse, held at gang hideouts and forced to call relatives in the U.S. to pay off the kidnappers. Such kidnappings affect thousands of migrants each year in Mexico, the report says.

Many are beaten, raped or killed in the process.

Well, that’s not very welcoming. In fact, Mexico has tough laws against illegal aliens and enforces them harshly, despite hypocrite Calderon’s discounting the illegality when the topic is Mexicans invading the United States.

To be fair, in the past local Mexes have complained that invasive Central Americans loiter about, form gangs and commit crimes. What a concept, that outsiders would group together into criminal gangs.

Amnesty has a written report (Invisible Victims: Migrants on the Move in Mexico) and produced a brief video (below) that shows Mexico treating its fellow Hispanics rather cruelly. One could characterize Mexicans’ behavior as being filled with HATE.

Hey, someone should contact the $PLC about this right away!
