Taliban USA?Moslems Target American Democracy
The fastest-growing religion in America is Islam. Estimations of today's number range from six to eight million followers, a meteoric rise from the 100,000 Moslems living in the U.S. in 1960. Some of these are African-Americans who have chosen to embrace Islam. The number of Arab-Americans is reckoned to be around 3.5 million. Some within this group have gotten a foothold in America because of the annual Visa Lottery which was created to increase diversity in the U.S. It permits 50,000 to immigrate in the year 2000. America's doors will be opened to a lucky group from countries including Sudan, Jordan and Pakistan. (These cultures include the practices of slavery, female genital mutilation and honor killings, so America's diversity will indeed be increased.) And because of the tilt toward family reunification in national immigration policy, these ethnic groups will grow. Dearborn, Michigan, has the highest concentration of ethnic Arabs outside the Middle East, according to the Arab-American Institute. The school district has around 18,000 students, about 35 percent of which is Muslim. Some grade schools are 90 percent Muslim. Some parents have demanded Halal foods prepared according to Muslim religious teaching be served at the school cafeteria; the district ended the serving of pork several years ago so no Muslim children would mistakenly eat it. (No one suggested that parents might prepare appropriate bag lunches for their children.) According to a Los Angeles Times op-ed It Matters What Kind of Islam Prevails (7/23/99), some Moslems living in the U.S. advocate a violent overthrow of our democracy in favor of a theocratic Islamic state. Author Daniel Pipes states:
In the words of a teacher at the Al-Ghazly Islamic School in Jersey City, N.J., 'Our short-term goal is to introduce Islam. In the long term, we must save American society. Allah will ask why I did not speak about Islam, because this piece of land is Allah's property.' Some of this ilk even talk about overthrowing the U.S. government and replacing it with an Islamic one. Although it sounds bizarre, this attitude attracts serious and widespread support among Muslims. While the possibility of such a revolution is slim, readers should remember that major Islamic terrorism occurred in the U.S. when the World Trade Center was bombed in 1993. During the protracted violence in the Mideast in autumn of 2000, there were incidents in Chicago of self-identified Palestinians attacking Jews. Around the same time, it was announced that a naturalized Arab-American had conspired with the terrorist Osama bin Laden in the 1998 bombings of two American embassies in Africa, killing 224. The man was a former U.S. Army sergeant, a member of the Special Forces. Any further violence will be the result of Congress' foolish immigration policy of admitting groups who hate America. Indeed, many of these cultures are fundamentally opposed to democracy. In fact, democracy in Moslem countries is rare. An Islamic government is an autocratic theocracy by definition and practice, since Islam does not recognize the separation of church and state. Many Moslems are not only unsupportive of free speech but actually condemn it as Salman Rushdie can attest. The fundamentalist Taliban of Afghanistan instituted gender apartheid, in which women were prohibited from having employment, leaving their homes without a male relative as a chaperone or receiving any education. The smallest infraction could result in beatings or death. And while some Moslems argue that the Taliban are not following the teachings of the Koran in such extreme social prohibitions, the Taliban regard themselves as Islamic purists. by Brenda Walker FURTHER READING:
