illegal immigration – Limits to Growth https://www.limitstogrowth.org An iconoclastic view of immigration and culture Wed, 16 Dec 2020 19:58:14 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.3 Aliens Abroad Look Forward to a Biden Presidency — and Open Borders https://www.limitstogrowth.org/articles/2020/12/16/aliens-abroad-look-forward-to-a-biden-presidency-and-open-borders/ Wed, 16 Dec 2020 19:58:14 +0000 https://www.limitstogrowth.org/?p=18803 The New York Times correctly envisions a Biden administration as having a far more forgiving border, unlike the illiberal sovereignty enforcement of the current president. In fact, the cartels are “telling migrants ‘border will be open’ when Biden takes over” according to Rep. Henry Cuellar.

The Times’ December 14 front page featured a sob-story style photo of a sniffling illegal alien about to be returned to his actual country of citizenship.

We wouldn’t expect him to work with his fellow citizens to improve their home societies, as was the case in years past: Latin America had many freedom fighters who worked for positive change in earlier centuries. But that was before it became easy to invade the US, steal jobs and obtain free stuff from the welfare office.

Interestingly, the article quotes one foreigner early on that “We are not bad people. We come to work.” But there is no mention that millions of Americans are still jobless because of the China virus shutdown of businesses. The press ignores that there is no need for more workers during this time of high unemployment among citizens. Nevertheless, adding more immigrants remains a top task for scribblers.

Once again, the media pursues its Diversity First agenda rather than supporting law and order. The press evidently believes that the United States should be welfare office to the world, or as the Times remarks “a safe haven for people fleeing persecution.”

Remember that the Third World population continues to grow by millions every year, so the pressure to invade the US will only increase.

As Biden Prepares to Take Office, a New Rush at the Border, New York Times, December 13, 2020

SASABE, Ariz. — By the time the Border Patrol spotted the two migrants in a tangle of shrubs on a frigid December morning, they had been meandering aimlessly in the desert for six days. They had lost their way on the final leg of a monthlong journey from Guatemala, encountering only herds of javelinas, lone coyotes and skin-piercing cactuses as they staggered north. Exhausted, thirsty and cold, they did not resist arrest.

Less than two hours later, agents had already processed them and deposited them back across the border in Mexico. Alfonso Mena, his jeans ripped at the knee, shivered with his companion on a bench less than 300 yards from Arizona and sobbed uncontrollably.

“What wouldn’t you do to help your children get ahead?” he said. A landscaping job in Houston awaited him, he said, and his family was counting on him. “We are not bad people. We come to work.”

It was not the first time he had tried to enter the United States. And it was unlikely to be the last.

Unauthorized entries are swelling in defiance of the lockdown President Trump imposed on the border during the pandemic and shaping up as the first significant challenge to President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s pledge to adopt a more compassionate policy along America’s 1,100-mile border with Mexico.

After a steep decline in border crossings through much of this year, interceptions of unauthorized migrants along the Arizona-Mexico border are climbing again: Detentions in October were up 30 percent over September, and .the figure in coming months is expected be even higher, despite the biting cold in the Sonoran desert.

The rising numbers suggest that the Trump administration’s expulsion policy, an emergency measure to halt spread of the coronavirus, is encouraging migrants to make repeated tries, in ever-more-remote locations, until they succeed in crossing the frontier undetected.

And they are likely the leading edge of a much more substantial surge toward the border, immigration analysts say, as a worsening economy in Central America, the disaster wrought by Hurricanes Eta and Iota and expectations of a more lenient U.S. border policy drive ever-larger numbers toward the United States.

New migrant caravans formed in Honduras in recent weeks, defying that country’s coronavirus-related lockdown in a bid to head toward the United States but were prevented from leaving the country. And the pandemic has decimated livelihoods in Mexico, prompting a rise in migration from that country after a 15-year decline.

“The pressures that have caused flows in the past have not abated and, in fact, have gotten worse because of the pandemic. If there is a perception of more-humane policies, you are likely to see an increase of arrivals at the border,” said T. Alexander Aleinikoff, director of the Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility at the New School in New York.

“That doesn’t mean that those flows cannot be adequately handled with a comprehensive set of policies that are quite different from Trump’s,” said Mr. Aleinikoff, “but you need a well-functioning bureaucracy to handle it.”

Mr. Biden has vowed to begin undoing the “damage” inflicted by the Trump administration’s border policies. He has said he will end a program that has returned tens of thousands of asylum seekers to Mexico and restore the country’s historical role as a safe haven for people fleeing persecution. According to the World Bank in 2018, more than three billion persons on earth (out of the more than seven billion that year) struggled to meet their basic needs. Certainly most of them would benefit from relocation to the First World, but it’s not possible for Europe and North America to admit such enormous numbers.

Still, foreigners persist in the fantasy that they can simply move to the US and get a raft of freebies from the unwilling taxpayer: just pronounce the magic word “Asylum” and the keys to the kingdom are handed over to all diverse peoples who claim to be Victims. Alien-transporting cartels spread this lie as part of their marketing plan and use it themselves.

As a result, some unlawful foreigners display extreme entitlement in their attitude:

ILLEGAL ALIEN/ASYLUM CLAIMER: “The only place I want to be is the United States. I never thought I would be returned here to Juarez. I’m waiting to go to the United States with my baby to get the best life for my son.”

Most asylum claimants are economic moochers, period. Before easy travel and cell phones, hispanics south of the border fought revolutions for their freedom and a better life, but later it became easier just to head north.

At least until recently, when President Trump tightened up the rules.

Spare Audio:

FOX HOST: It’s been almost a year since Washington sent asylum seekers back to Mexico. So far less than one percent have been granted asylum through this controversial program. We have William la Jeunesse joining us from the west coast bureau with more on the story.

WILLIAM LA JEUNESSE: From the president’s point of view the Remain in Mexico plan is working. Out of 24,000 migrants claiming asylum at the border, judges allowed just over 100 to stay in the US — that’s less than one percent, compared to 20 percent in previous years, according to the Syracuse University study. Another 32,000 wait in Mexico, waiting for judges to hear their case. . .

Depending on your politics, those numbers spell success or failure. The administration credits the program in cutting illegal immigration by getting rid of the incentives to make a claim, get released and disappear. The low acceptance rate exposes the scam, they say, that most claims are not based on persecution, but a better job. (Continues)

One prime example is illegal immigration enforcement, which the left declares to be the province of the cruel right that supposed wants to prevent non-white foreigners from entering by any means.

That’s nonsense of course. There are many reasons to enforce law and borders, one of which is environmental protection, a subject sometimes considered to be a value of Democrats. But because of political bifurcation and other complicating factors, the environmental threat has now largely disappeared from general discussion. Similarly, the alarming increase in world population — more than doubling from the 3.7 billion on the first Earth Day in 1970 to over 7.7 billion today — is no longer part of the immigration debate.

A growing Third World population is a major factor encouraging the millions of poor south of the border to try to enter the US to steal jobs from citizens, trashing the border along the way.

Last May Tucson’s KVOA-TV reported on the continuing border trash situation, from which the snapshot below is taken.

Recently Tucker Carlson interviewed the Secretary of the Interior about the environmental damage done to the border region by thousands of foreigners invading the country.

(Spare videos here and here.)

TUCKER CARLSON: Well, thanks to America’s border crisis, every year, tens of thousands of people come illegally across our southern border — immigrants, human traffickers, drug smugglers, in some cases. And they come into the desert along the U.S./Mexico border.

The fragile desert ecosystems there are damaged by that. That’s been known for a long time. If you cared about the environment, you would care about that. And yet, anyone who raises alarms is called names. We don’t care because we care about the environment and this country. A member of President Trump’s cabinet is here tonight to tell us about what the administration is doing in the face of this crisis. David Bernhardt is the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, and he joins us tonight. Mr. Secretary, thanks so much for coming on.

SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR DAVID BERNHARDT: Thanks for having me.

CARLSON: So, this has been a problem acknowledged by Democrat and Republican administrations for a long time, for decades. And it’s a real problem. What is this administration doing to help fix it?

BERNHARDT: Well, the reality is that common sense says when you have tremendous trafficking, ad hoc trails, trash, debris, and fires, you have a lot of damage to native vegetation, wildlife, and to the ecosystem. And so —

CARLSON: Trash, debris, and fires? So, we’re not allowed to be concerned about that. But if you cared about the environment, that would be a concern, correct?

BERNHARDT: You sure would think so. Indeed. I went down and personally inspected a number of sites on the border. And the reality was that where we put a wall, we have habitat restoration taking place, environmental flora and fauna begin to come back instead of it being trampled. And the reality is the wall will provide additional environmental benefits. And that is simply a fact.

CARLSON: So, a huge percentage, I think at least half of the wildfires, the fires along that border, are caused by people here illegally.

BERNHARDT: That’s right.

CARLSON: Environmental groups don’t say anything about that.

BERNHARDT: They don’t.

CARLSON: Why don’t they?

BERNHARDT: Well, I think it doesn’t fit the narrative. I mean, the reality is those people that claim to be the most opposed to the wall also claim to be the most pro-environmental supporters out there. And this just doesn’t fit with our narrative. The reality is ad hoc trails, debris are extraordinary in the magnitude that they have on the public lands. And the public lands — we have wilderness areas that have essentially been destroyed by illegal activity. And —

CARLSON: Including illegal marijuana farming.

BERNHARDT: Oh, absolutely.

CARLSON: Dumping chemicals into streams.

BERNHARDT: Pesticides.

CARLSON: The Sierra Club just sits there and says nothing as it happens?

BERNHARDT: Radio silent. Radio silent.

CARLSON: Well, I mean, can you imagine a greater betrayal of their stated charge to protect the environment, to ignore environmental degradation like that?

BERNHARDT: Well, and more importantly, it’s something we can actually do something about. I mean, there are a number of environmental issues where you look at it and say, “Well, that would be really hard to solve.” Here’s one that we can actually have a solution. Lower the number of people coming across, provide the ground some restoration and get on with it. (Continues)

Pensacola Attack Is Yet Another Failure of Foreigner Military Training in America https://www.limitstogrowth.org/articles/2019/12/09/pensacola-attack-is-yet-another-failure-of-foreigner-military-training-in-america/ Mon, 09 Dec 2019 23:34:36 +0000 https://www.limitstogrowth.org/?p=18394 The media thought patrol has apparently approved the FBI’s interpretation of Friday’s mass shooting at the Pensacola Naval Air Station as an “act of terror” rather than a mental health breakdown or homesickness for Saudi Arabia:

FBI is investigating Pensacola shooting incident as act of terrorism, Washington Post, December 8, 2019

Investigators in Florida and Saudi Arabia on Sunday dug deeper into the background of a Saudi aviation student who fatally shot three people at a Pensacola, Florida, naval base, as lawmakers from both parties demanded the kingdom fully cooperate in the investigation.

Officials are treating the shooting as an act of terrorism and are trying to learn whether the gunman was working as part of a larger network when he opened fire in a Naval Air Station Pensacola classroom Friday, killing three people and wounding eight. [. . .]

The gunman, a Royal Saudi Air Force member named Ahmed Mohammed al-Shamrani, was shot dead by a sheriff’s deputy responding to the rampage. Shamrani apparently left hints that he was motivated at least in part by his hatred of American foreign policy and military might.

It’s encouraging that various public officials are questioning the wisdom of the program, which has gotten little oversight. Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) is “calling for a full review of the U.S. military programs to train foreign nationals on American soil.”

Florida Governor Ron Desantis was critical of US gun freedoms being extended to foreigners which allowed the killer to purchase the Glock that he used in the murders. “I’m a big supporter of the Second Amendment, but the Second Amendment applies so that we the American people can keep and bear arms,” Desantis said. “It does not apply to Saudi Arabians.”

One simple fix would be to have the training take place in the home countries since the US has military bases all over the world. Why must potentially dangerous foreigners be brought inside America’s borders for their education?

This is a big program and security has not been adequate.

CNN noted on Dec 6, “As of Friday, the Department of Defense has 5,181 foreign students from 153 countries in the US for security cooperation related training…”

As reported here in 2016: Dozens of Afghan Soldier Trainees Go Missing in America, indicating that some young men use the military training as an opportunity for illegal immigration.

Below, in 2010 Afghan army officers train with US Marines and Navy personnel in Camp Pendleton in California — some may be coming to your town!

In 2017, ABC News reported that 152 Afghans in the US for training have gone missing over the previous 12 years.

Some absconders probably want only to mooch an American lifestyle rather than return to Backwardistan. But others may plan to use their military skills to murder the hated infidel, as did Mohammed al-Shamrani.

Or something.

Naturally, when a volcano erupts, people in the area have to flee so they aren’t burned alive, Pompeii style. But the article notes, “Many of the survivors, with nothing left, headed for the United States” — as if there were no other alternative, although some volcano victims did indeed relocate within the country.

America has been generous to victims of war and natural disaster — perhaps unduly so. Now an unlimited welcome mat is expected, even though the population of the vulnerable Third World has grown by billions of humans in recent decades.

Here’s a shocker statistic from the article: “More than 250,000 Guatemalans — at least 2% of the country’s population — have migrated to the United States in the past two years.”

That’s not what I had in mind when I voted for candidate Trump in 2016. The Deep State clearly wants open borders, but the president could have pushed harder for enforcement over the two years when he had a Republican congress. And today it seems little has changed to keep out illegal alien invaders.

The article is one long narrative of Third World victimhood, because liberal scribblers cannot imagine brown people coping with adversity in their own homeland and who instead must be rescued by the big bad white United States.

Indigenous Guatemalans flee volcano, search for safer ground in Guatemala or United States, by Kevin Sieff, Washington Post, November 27, 2019

COLONIA QUINCE DE OCTUBRE LA TRINIDAD, Guatemala – In this village at the base of the Volcano of Fire, there’s a simple explanation for the surge in migration to the United States, and there’s a complicated one.

The simple explanation is that on June 3, 2018, the volcano erupted, killing hundreds of people in minutes and rendering a patch of Guatemala uninhabitable. Many of the survivors, with nothing left, headed for the United States.

But the more complicated story is the one that residents here discuss before leaving – a history in which the United States is intimately involved. It’s the story of how Guatemala’s indigenous communities have been displaced and dispossessed for more than a century – sometimes fleeing U.S.-backed soldiers, sometimes ferried in caravans funded by U.S.-backed aid groups.

It’s the story of how La Trinidad came to be relocated to the base of an active volcano, with the assistance of the United Nations, the United States and the Guatemalan government.

More than 250,000 Guatemalans – at least 2% of the country’s population – have migrated to the United States in the past two years. Of those migrants, analysts say, a disproportionate number are indigenous. More than two decades since this country’s civil war, which pitted Guatemala’s military against its native communities, the exodus points to one of Latin America’s starkest inequalities. It points to places like La Trinidad.

“We’ve been migrating for 100 years,” says Simeon Camposeco Aguilar, a 56-year-old coffee farmer here. “Sometimes it feels like this community is going to keep moving forever.”

Camposeco’s son migrated to central California two months after the volcano erupted. It continues to rumble every 15 minutes or so, sending a plume of smoke into the air and shaking the ground.

“It’s normal! It’s normal!” Camposeco reassures outsiders. That’s what the residents of Trinidad told each other until June 2018, when lava flowed toward them at 150 mph.

The Guatemalan government published a declaration this July: “The community is not appropriate for urban development,” officials said. The recommendation? “Total evacuation.”

Now, it was up to Camposeco and other community leaders: Could they find a new place to live in Guatemala, an alternative that would stop the flow to the United States? (Continues)

In 2013, [...]]]> Many of America’s immigration laws are wrong-headed at the core, and arguably one of the worst is the U Visa which allowed foreign crime victims to remain in the United States as long as the offense against them was being investigated.

But over time, the temporary hang out turned into a green card. In 2013, Rep. Diane Black (R-TN) introduced the “U Visa Reform Act of 2013,” H.R. 463, but it didn’t go anywhere.

For background, see my 2007 article, Victim Visas—How America Stupidly Rewards Misfortune and Fraud.

Naturally, that sort of law is a serious fraud magnet, such as reported here in a 2013 case where an illegal alien in California arranged to have a fake robbery against her so she could remain in the US as a privileged crime victim.

On Friday, Tucker Carlson noted a rather more grandiose U Visa charade, involving 10 aliens at Bob’s Burgers n’ Teriyakis in SeaTac, Washington.

The good news is the fraud was figured out pretty quickly; the bad news is that Washington is a sanctuary state, so the aliens won’t be deported.

TUCKER CARLSON: Well, it’s a story so nuts and unlikely, it can only happen in something like America’s immigration system where crazy things do happen quite a bit.

According to the Sheriff’s Office in King County, Washington — that’s where Seattle is — a group of about 10 immigrants carried out an elaborate fake burglary against themselves, and why did they do that? But one of the many visas that we offer to foreigners is called a non-immigrant visa. It allows a foreigner who was a victim of a crime in the United States to stay in this country for the sake of assisting authorities in solving the crime.

Now, since this crime was fake, of course, the hope was that the case would never be closed and they could stay in this country long term, maybe even forever.

Jason Rantz has been following the story. He’s a Seattle area radio show host and he joins us tonight. So Jason, did I describe that correctly? I mean, you know, it’s almost like out of a movie, this story.

JASON RANTZ: It’s insane and obviously this is a crime that freaked out a whole bunch of people. It happened in SeaTac, it’s right outside of Seattle. We don’t normally see these kinds of robberies, where in this case it was alleged that two men in masks, one with a handgun went into Bob’s Burgers and Teriyaki. It’s this restaurant. They held people up, they tied people up. They sexually assaulted two of the female victims before getting away.

And the story was that some customer wandered in and noticed that this had happened and called 911, and then obviously King County Sheriff’s Deputies took this incredibly seriously. They had a specific description of the two individuals. They had a car and a license plate, and it turns out it was completely a hoax. And they found out pretty quickly that it was a hoax.

And during the investigation they discovered, yes this was, so they thought they would qualify to have a U Visa which says under certain circumstances under certain crimes, you’re protected from being deported because you would have to participate in the actual justice system to go after these bad guys.

Now in theory, when you think you’re not actually going to be deported because there’s not actually a crime, but they think there’s a crime, it means indefinitely they’d be able to stay here.

Now, the ironic part about this story is now that they figured it out, right? They haven’t yet pressed charges, and the expectation is there are going to be some charges. Well, in Washington State, and in King County, and in Seattle, we are sanctuary. We have sanctuary policies, which means even after they are convicted, and let’s say they do some jail time, they’re unlikely to actually be deported anyway, because we will not participate with ICE and we won’t turn them over.

CARLSON: Even though they faked the crime and tied up Seattle area law enforcement trying to solve a crime they that they committed, they won’t be turned over to the Feds for deportation.

RANTZ: They will not be — they can’t be turned over because of our Washington State sanctuary law. It’s absolutely ridiculous and it’s dangerous.

CARLSON: Well, it’s also — it’s masochism, so you can sort of see what’s going on. I mean, there are people who hate our society and are seeking to destroy it obviously.

Jason Rantz, great to see you tonight. Thank you for that — for your explanation.

He revealed a globalist, anti-borders theology in his 2013 book Immigration and the Next America, as quoted in La Times:

“Do we really believe that America is one nation under God, made up from every other people?” he writes. “Or is America instead a nation that is essentially white, Anglo-Saxon, and Protestant, but permits the presence of peoples of other races, colors, and religions?”

It does not appear that America’s founders imagined the nation to be a test tube for diversity. But extreme diversity — including historic enemies like the followers of hostile Islam — is certainly what we have gotten through immigration, although Americans never voted for an influx of unfriendlies, polygamists and jihadists.

Indeed, the American revolution can be seen as an outgrowth of the Protestant reformation, particularly when among the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence, only one was catholic. A religious scholar notes, “ ‘There is no King, but King Jesus,’ a rallying cry in the colonies during the American Revolution, had its roots in the Reformation.”

We can be sure that Gomez will use his new office to campaign for a mass amnesty benefiting millions of foreign lawbreakers — he pledged to in an article that appeared on the Los Angeles Times front page on Wednesday.

Interestingly, the Times’ front page visually connected its Gomez article with the DACA case that went before the Supreme Court last week.

Meanwhile, a search for news of Catholic Priest Sex Abuse for the last 30 days gets over a million results, yet the archbishop believes he is qualified to lecture us Americans about the law and fairness of our immigration policies. Perhaps getting his own house in order would be a more appropriate project than shredding American sovereignty.

Of course it’s obvious that the US has millions of loyal citizens who are also catholics, but the Vaticrats have harbored a den of corruption for centuries.

The Times article was reprinted in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, posted below:

Archbishop Jose Gomez becomes the first Latino elected to lead U.S. Catholic bishops, Los Angeles Times, November 13, 2019

LOS ANGELES — On the eve of his election as the new leader of U.S. bishops, Archbishop Jose Gomez had a message for the faithful back home: It was well past time for immigration reform.

“In this great country, we should not have our young people living under the threat of deportation, their lives dependent on the outcome of a court case,” the archbishop of Los Angeles said in an email to his flock Monday evening.

Alluding to Tuesday’s U.S. Supreme Court arguments on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, Gomez continued: “We pray tonight that our president and Congress will come together, set aside their differences, and provide our young brothers and sisters with a path to legalization and citizenship.”

Already the highest-ranking Latino in the U.S. Catholic Church, Gomez on Tuesday marked another milestone when he became the first Latino elected president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Born in Monterrey, Mexico, Gomez has in recent years evolved into a high-profile and authoritative voice in the American church, advocating for policy reforms that would include a path to citizenship for immigrants living in the country illegally. The soft-spoken 67-year-old will begin his three-year term as president just as his tenure as vice president comes to an end.

His election, which kicked off the second day of the bishops’ fall meeting in Baltimore, was regarded by many observers of the Roman Catholic Church as a fait accompli, a historic moment set in motion in 2016 when he was elected vice president of the national conference. Some within the church hope that Gomez will utilize his experience fighting for immigrant rights in his new post, leading the conference to be more outspoken in advocating for immigration reform.

“I am overwhelmed. It is a big responsibility,” Gomez said in a phone interview Tuesday. “I am grateful to the bishops for their support and confidence in me, and I think this is a great lesson for the archdiocese, for Los Angeles and Latinos in the country.”

Gomez’s rise comes amid Latinos’ shifting relationship with the Catholic faith. U.S. Latinos are no longer majority-Catholic, according to a Pew Research Center survey released last month. Some 47% describe themselves as Catholic, the survey showed, down from 57% a decade ago. At the same time, 23% of Latinos say they are religiously unaffiliated, up from 15% in 2009.

Gomez’s ascendance could help shore up or even replenish the number of Latino Catholics.

“This is huge,” Father Thomas J. Reese, a senior analyst at Religion News Service, said of the election. “Having a Mexican American as the president of the bishops conference sends a real message to Hispanics across the country, showing that not only are they part of the church, they are also part of the leadership of the church at the highest level.”

Gomez, a naturalized U.S. citizen, will take up his new position at a time of bitter division over the Trump administration’s immigration policies, Reese added.

“This is a Mexican immigrant who is going to be the leader at a time when immigrants are demonized,” Reese said. “This is a symbolic message from the bishops on the importance of the immigration issue to them, and the importance of immigrants to the Catholic Church and in American society.”

L.A.’s archbishop is at once a conservative and a progressive: staunch in his opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage while tenacious in his advocacy for immigrants and the poor.

“He knows we have a very divided church today and one of my hopes with him as the head of the conference is he will find ways to bring us together,” said Father Thomas P. Rausch, a professor of theological studies at Loyola Marymount University. “He’s conservative, but his impulses are pastoral.”

As the archbishop of the San Antonio archdiocese before coming to L.A., Gomez emerged as a leading advocate for doctrinal conformity, determined to stave off what he saw as creeping secularism in the church.

But in 2013, Gomez published a book that voiced his support for a path to citizenship for the estimated 11 million immigrants living in the country without legal status. His advocacy aligns with efforts by Pope Francis to raise awareness about the challenges immigrants face. (Continues)

2020 Democrats Push Open Borders despite Environmental Damage They Claim from Climate Change https://www.limitstogrowth.org/articles/2019/11/12/2020-democrats-push-open-borders-despite-environmental-damage-they-claim-from-climate-change/ Tue, 12 Nov 2019 21:34:16 +0000 https://www.limitstogrowth.org/?p=18320 Democrats are so desperate to import future liberal voters from abroad that the D-candidates will violate any alleged principles to import as many newbies as possible. The 2020 Democrats have gone off a cliff to be “pro-immigration” by extending the idea of immigrant to include anyone of the world’s nearly 8 billion inhabitants who might decide to move here. Add to that the Democrat promise of free healthcare for all, including illegal aliens, means there is a huge incentive to reach stupid-generous America.

The latest immigration pitch comes from Bernie Sanders who wants to welcome thousands of “climate refugees” to the US which assumes major suffering somewhere on the planet because of extended bad weather, drought or some other regional hiccup. I remain convinced that climate change is often trotted out as a cause of problems that can more properly be attributed to world population growth. Plus, climate change is a flexible enough problem to allow many government-imposed solutions, definitely a plus for Democrats.

Tucker Carlson examined the ramifications of Bernie’s plan for “climate migrants” on his Monday show.

We humans now number more than 7.7 billion persons, more than double the world’s population on the first Earth Day in 1970 when the number was 3.7 billion — that’s quite an uptick in just under 50 years.

Top Democrats claim to believe in climate change as a big problem that is worsened by the United States, yet they want to increase America’s population substantially by immigration. Go figure.

TUCKER CARLSON: Well a couple years ago, Bernie Sanders described open borders as a Koch brothers proposal because it is literally a Koch brothers proposal — it’s a libertarian idea — he was right. Mass migration reduces wages for low-skilled workers but now Sanders has changed his mind. His campaign has released an immigration proposal that reads like something the Koch brothers would write: it would halt deportation or abolish enforcement of our borders, abolish ICE and create a new category for something called “climate migrants.”

Justin Haskins is a research fellow at the Heartland Institute. He joins us tonight to explain what a climate migrant might be, and more pressingly, Justin, why would a climate migrant have a right to come to my country?

JUSTIN HASKINS: Well apparently climate migrants, which I don’t even think are a real thing, are essentially a category of people from third world countries, from developing nations, who are so supposedly suffering as a result of climate change, man-caused climate change.

Now, I don’t believe that anybody is actually suffering from man-caused climate change, but Bernie Sanders’ proposal would have 50,000 people, 50,000 at minimum, come to the United States from around the world, who are suffering from climate change, supposedly, in just the first year — and over the course of his presidency, hundreds of thousands of people, because supposedly this is good for climate justice or something along those lines.

But the most bizarre part of all of this is that I thought, according to Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren and everybody else in the socialist left, that human beings are causing climate change, that humans’ CO2 emissions, that that’s what’s causing climate change, and it’s going to be catastrophic.

Well, if that’s true, then why are we bringing people from all over the world where they produce CO2 emissions less per person, in places like Mexico and Guatemala and places like that, why are we bringing them to the United States where we produce CO2 emissions per person at a much higher rate? It doesn’t make any sense.

CARLSON: And also, if you cared about the environment, which I personally do emphatically care, and actually go outside once in a while, unlike most people on the left — why would you want a crowded country?

Isn’t crowding your country the fastest way to despoil it, to pollute it, to make it a place you wouldn’t want to live?

HASKINS: Yeah absolutely. Look, the left is schizophrenic on a lot of issues, and this is one of those issues.

It doesn’t make any sense at all to have an open door, open border policy where you’re bringing people into the United States when people are supposedly destroying the planet, destroying the environment, where we’re we’re talking about population control in some parts of the left right now.

Alexandria Ocasio Cortez says that she stays up at night, and she doesn’t think she can have children because she’s worried about the effect it’s having on climate change, but Alexandria Ocasio Cortez wants to bring in hundreds of thousands, maybe even millions of people from around the world into the United States. How does this make any sense?

CARLSON: And actually, I mean this with sincerity, I feel sorry for her because I think she means it. I think that the movement that was started to clean up the environment which most people, again very much including me, totally for that has morphed into this weird cluster of neuroses where people actually think they can’t have children because of climate, and it’s sad. I mean it really is — paging Dr. Freud — I mean these people need help. Well I guess we all need help our society’s going crazy.

Justin, thank you for your part in making it a little bit less crazy.

Conservatives Leave California for a More Recognizable America https://www.limitstogrowth.org/articles/2019/11/07/conservatives-leave-california-for-a-more-recognizable-america/ Fri, 08 Nov 2019 04:37:36 +0000 https://www.limitstogrowth.org/?p=18308 The front page of Thursday’s Los Angeles Times included a notice of how California has become increasingly unfriendly to conservative-minded residents who are leaving in the thousands — the newspaper headline was Leaving California for ‘Redder Pastures.’ The piece began with a description of a retired couple, Judy and Richard Stark, who packed it all [...]]]> The front page of Thursday’s Los Angeles Times included a notice of how California has become increasingly unfriendly to conservative-minded residents who are leaving in the thousands — the newspaper headline was Leaving California for ‘Redder Pastures.’ The piece began with a description of a retired couple, Judy and Richard Stark, who packed it all up for a move to McKinney, Texas, north of Dallas. The two conservatives were tired of the liberal politics as well as policies that welcomed illegal immigration.

It makes sense then that California has teetered on the brink of a 40 million population for a while, but it hasn’t gotten there because the illegal aliens flowing in have been balanced by the citizens escaping. Still, it’s pretty amazing that nearly 700,000 left the once desirable state in 2018.

A Fox show noticed the same article and discussed the big picture. Economist Steve Moore asked, “How do you screw up California? Beautiful weather, beautiful mountains, the technology capital of the world, and yet I just have to say, the high taxes, the high regulation, the high housing costs are just driving middle class people out. And by the way, it’s the middle class that’s leaving, so California’s becoming a state of super rich people who live in Silicon Valley and very poor people and homeless people who live in the cities. It’s a sad situation.”

California residents leave for many reasons, like the aforementioned high taxes, crushing traffic, skyrocketing cost of housing — and also to escape demographic changes that tear at the cultural fabric.

California conservatives leaving the state for ‘redder pastures’ Los Angeles Times, November 4, 2019

The Volkswagen SUV whizzed past the Texas state line, a U-Haul trailer in tow, as it made its way toward Amarillo.

“Yay!” Judy Stark cried out to her husband, Richard, as they officially left California. The pair bobbed their heads to ’50s music playing on the radio.

Like many other Republican and conservative voters in California, the retired couple have decided to leave the state. A major reason, Stark and her spouse say, is their disenchantment with deep-blue California’s liberal political culture.

Despite spending most of their lives in the Golden State, they were fed up with high taxes, lukewarm support for local law enforcement, and policies they believe have thrown open the doors to illegal immigration.

Just over half of California’s registered voters have considered leaving the state, according to a UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies poll conducted for the Los Angeles Times. Republicans and conservative voters were nearly three times as likely as their Democratic or liberal counterparts to seriously have considered moving — 40% compared with 14%, the poll found. Conservatives mentioned taxes and California’s political culture as a reason for leaving more frequently than they cited the state’s soaring housing costs.

Stark and her husband decided it was time to put their Modesto home up for sale about six months ago. After doing some research online, she came across the website Conservative Move, which, as its name suggests, helps conservatives in California relocate from liberal states to redder ones, such as Texas and Idaho.

Pulled over at a Pilot truck stop just outside Amarillo, Stark said she was excited to be hours from their final destination, Collin County, near Dallas. The pair purchased a newly constructed three-bedroom home in McKinney for about $300,000. In much of California, Stark said, a similar home would run about twice as much. (Continues)

It discusses “microfinance” in Guatemala and how locals use it to illegally immigrate to the United States. The story mentions Muhammad Yunus as “one of the forefathers of microfinance” even though the ordinary bank loans discussed have nothing in common with his carefully managed program of tiny loans awarded to very poor women in countries like Bangladesh.

It’s not the first time that sleazy Third World banking has been prettied up by calling it “microlending.”

Here’s a snip from an explanatory blog I wrote some years back, Alleviating the Pressure to Emigrate:

Microloans are very small loans made to women so that they can start their own businesses. It was started by an economics professor, Muhammed Yunus, who believed that the poor needed credit, not charity. Starting in 1976, Yunus created the Grameen Bank and secured donations to fund its lending programs. (Grameen is a Bangladeshi word that means rural.) Today the bank is self-supporting from the interest paid on its loans to the poor. Repayment rates are very high because Grameen has learned how to structure its program for maximum success.

Microloans are aimed at women, since across most cultures women consistently deal more responsibly with the loans than men. An individual woman might buy a sewing machine or a loom, or perhaps a simple handcart to start a delivery business. Although the money is loaned to individual women, every loan must be repaid in order for others in the local group to get any additional loans. In addition, there is a social contract to which every participant must agree. Among other things, members pledge to drink only safe water, limit the size of their families, educate their children, grow vegetables and refuse any participation in dowry customs (which are the source of much violence against women).

Another point made in the Post article is that “microfinance” is important to finance illegal immigration to the United States, which is entirely contrary to Yunus’ goal of creating a loan program that would strengthen local communities.

Interestingly, I attended a 2008 Yunus lecture in San Francisco, and he answered my personal question about immigration:

COMMONWEALTH CLUB: A member of the audience asks this question: With five billion people living in countries poorer than Mexico, don’t you think microlending is a better strategy for tackling poverty than massive immigration…

YUNUS: People seek their opportunities if you can attract people with microcredit, keep them in their places, of course they will love that.

It’s not fun to leave your home and struggle through all kinds of legal barriers, live like thieves and criminals in another country.

[Immigration] is no fun. They do it out of desperation because life is so difficult there, So if we can all make life better where people live, where they were born, where their forefathers lived, then nobody will leave their place.

So here is the highly flawed Washington Post article, reprinted in the Houston Chronicle:

USAID helped set up microfinance in Guatemala. Now it’s funding illegal migration., Kevin Sieff, Washington Post, November 4, 2019

NEBAJ, Guatemala – The winding roads into the valley of Nebaj are lined with advertisements for cheap loans. Banks and cooperatives and microfinance operations make their pitches: “Credit in three days.” “Funding for your small business.” “We’ve lowered our interest rates!”

U.S. officials have long touted the power of finance to lift people out of poverty – and backed loans to farmers and small-business owners across the developing world. But here in the Guatemala Highlands, the epicenter of the country’s migrant exodus, those loans often fund a different activity, the region’s most profitable: Smuggling migrants north to the United States.

Over the past nine months, the number of Guatemalans who have reached the U.S. border has swelled to more than 250,000. They include many of the country’s poorest people – subsistence farmers who have somehow managed to scrape together up to $12,000 to fund the journey north.

What enables those payments is a vast system of credit that includes financial institutions set up and supported by the United States and the World Bank, part of the global boom in microfinance over the past two decades. The U.S. government and the World Bank have each extended tens of millions of dollars in funding and loan guarantees, money that helped create what is now Guatemala’s biggest microfinance organization, Fundación Génesis Empresarial, and backed one of its largest banks, Banrural.

But in Nebaj and communities like it around the country, those financial institutions now serve Guatemalans eager to migrate.

Access to credit has helped make this Central American nation the largest single source of migrants to the United States over the past year. About 2% of the population has been apprehended at the U.S. border since 2018.

It has also had devastating consequences for those who fail in their journeys – those who are deported before they earn enough to pay back their loans. They become ensnared by debt, losing savings, businesses and homes, which makes them more likely to try to migrate again.

“We do our best to keep our loans from funding migration or paying smugglers,” said Jorge Guzmán, the manager of the Banrural bank in Nebaj. “But there’s only so much we can do to monitor.”

U.S. officials say they stopped supporting direct-lending microfinance programs in Guatemala more than 10 years ago. The World Bank funded Génesis Empresarial as recently as last year. (Continues)
