CBN reporter Dale Hurd checks in with Spain to see how Muslim immigration is working out.

Not so well, as it happens. The demographic transformation has been swift and brutal, particularly when combined with the Islamic view that the 700 years of Muslim rule of al Andalus entitles them to move in and take over.

The fear is growing in towns like Salt, where the political takeover by Muslims is within view. A pro-Spain party, Platform for Catalonia, is opposed to the invasion, but the hour is late.

Under Siege? Spain Resists Islamic ‘Invasion’, CBN, Feb 6, 2012

BARCELONA, Spain — Bullfighting is now illegal in the Spanish province of Catalonia. Some arenas have been converted into business spaces.

But Muslims want to turn the most famous arena, the Coliseum, into a giant mosque.

In fact, some cities in Spain now look more like the Middle East. Muslims, who once ruled most of nation, are returning in large numbers.

In the city of Salt, parents have come to pick up their children from school. Muslims already make up 40 percent of city residents and will soon be the majority.

But the city government has pushed back, placing a one-year hold on a large mosque project funded by radical Wahhabis in Saudi Arabia.

For good measure, someone cursed the ground at the building site with a pig head that was still there when CBN News arrived. Islamic law forbids the building of a mosque on ground soiled by pigs.

But the number of Muslims in Salt is increasing so rapidly, it is now only a matter of time before Muslims will be running the city.

“When the first Muslim political party presents itself, all the Muslims will vote for it, and we’ll all end up wearing headscarves. We’re in a really big problem,” Salt city councilwoman Maria Osuna told CBN News.

Immigration or Invasion?

In the 7th century, Muslim armies conquered most of Spain, calling it Al-Andulus. They would not be completely expelled for 700 years, the year Columbus discovered the new world.

Now Muslims are returning, and polls suggest they are not returning to be Spaniards. A Pew survey found that 7 out of 10 Muslims in Spain think of themselves as Muslim rather than Spaniards.

“Plataforma x Catalunya,” or Platform for Catalonia, was the first political party to take the Muslim surge seriously. But in politically correct Spain, which celebrated the 1,300-year anniversary of the Muslim invasion as a good thing, Platform for Catalonia is denounced as racist and xenophobic.

Platform leader Joseph Anglada said his party is not against immigrants. They’re against uncontrolled immigration and what they say are immigrants who do not want to be a part of Spain.

“Muslim immigrants are not here to adapt,” Anglada said. “They’re here to conquer.”

“First the husband comes as the head of the family,” he explained. “Then the wife and children, and later he comes with his parents, in-laws,and grandparents, and it has turned into an invasion.”

‘Mysterious’ Dog Poisonings

In the city of Lleida, someone is poisoning dogs. Police don’t know who has been doing it, but the suspicion is that Muslims were the culprits.

Before the poisonings, Muslims were trying to get city government to ban dogs from public transport and public areas because they consider dogs unclean.

“What happened was, all of a sudden, one day, 12 to 14 animals showed up dead. They had eaten something or been given something. We don’t know,” Josep Ortiz I Llleida told CBN News.

Lleida, which is about one-quarter Muslim, was the first Spanish city to ban the burqa. Then the mayor shut down the city’s mosque because it was overflowing with Friday worshippers.

CBN News went to see where the Muslim men are praying now, and it is a large open air pavilion. Filming with a hidden camera, we saw more than 500 men listening to a sermon in Arabic.

“We don’t know what the Muslim leaders are telling their people,” Moises Font with Platform for Catalonia said. “Are they encouraging Muslims to assimilate or to stay separate?”

Spaniards Disappearing

There are reportedly more than 100 radical Wahhabi mosques in Spain. And two radical Muslim TV channels from the Middle East are now broadcasting into Spain.

And just as Muslim immigration is surging, the native Spanish are slowly disappearing. Their birth rate is below the replacement number.

Also, large numbers of college age Spaniards are fleeing the country to escape a 50 percent unemployment rate for young people.

Meanwhile, the Muslim birthrate is at least twice the native birthrate, and the number of Muslims has increased tenfold in the last 20 years.

A secret report by Spanish intelligence leaked to the media found that radical groups from the Middle East are pouring large sums of money into Spain to control the nation’s Muslims.

“The greatest threat for Spain, Catalonia, and Europe is Muslim immigration,” Anglada told CBN News.

“We know they are coming here to conquer what, according to Muslims, used to belong to them,” he said. “We have a moral duty so that in the future they can say that at least there was someone, one party, that was not willing to surrender the West to Islamization.”

Here in perennially broke Mexifornia, it’s old news that state universities admitting more foreign students paying full tuition to offset some of the bills. (See California Universities Abandon State Students.) UC Berkeley campus can sound more like Chinatown than California.

The New York Times has noticed the trend nationwide (posted below), but doesn’t mention how citizen young people get shafted as a result. Every slot taken by a rich Red Chinese national is a space not available for a citizen kid, whose parents have paid a lifetime of taxes to fund America’s educational infrastructure.

Another aspect is the widespread cheating of Chinese applicants to gain acceptance to American universities. One may assume that since universities regard foreign students as walking checkbooks, the schools will be loath to flunk out kiddies who can’t speak English, for example. So the expensive educations will be less worth the cost for Americans and the dumbing down will decrease the value of the degree.

In addition, certain Presidential candidates think that “stapling green cards to diplomas” is a fine idea. Perhaps Mr. Romney, Gingrich et al haven’t thought the policy through, since it plays havoc with limiting H-1b visas to promote citizen employment in tech and engineering fields. And given the fondness of business for a diverse-appearing workforce, white Americans will be at a disadvantage in competing with foreign graduates.

Taking More Seats on Campus, Foreigners Also Pay the Freight, New York Times, Feb 4, 2012

SEATTLE — This is the University of Washington’s new math: 18 percent of its freshmen come from abroad, most from China. Each pays tuition of $28,059, about three times as much as students from Washington State. And that, according to the dean of admissions, is how low-income Washingtonians — more than a quarter of the class — get a free ride.

With state financing slashed by more than half in the last three years, university officials decided to pull back on admissions offers to Washington residents, and increase them to students overseas.

That has rankled some local politicians and parents, a few of whom have even asked Michael K. Young, the university president, whether their children could get in if they paid nonresident tuition. “It does appeal to me a little,” he said.

There is a widespread belief in Washington that internationalization is the key to the future, and Mr. Young said he was not at all bothered that there were now more students from other countries than from other states. (Out-of-state students pay the same tuition as foreign students.)

“Is there any advantage to our taking a kid from California versus a kid from China?” he said. “You’d have to convince me, because the world isn’t divided the way it used to be.”

If the university’s reliance on full-freight Chinese students to balance the budget echoes the nation’s dependence on China as the largest holder of American debt, well, said the dean of admissions, Philip A. Ballinger, “this is a way of getting some of that money back.”

By the reckoning of the Institute of International Education, foreign students in the United States contribute about $21 billion a year to the national economy, including $463 million here in Washington State. But the influx affects more than just the bottom line — campus culture, too, is changing.

While the University of Washington’s demographic shifts have been sharper and faster — international students were 2 percent of the freshmen in 2006 — similar changes are under way at flagship public universities across the nation: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa and University of California campuses in Berkeley and Los Angeles all had at least 10 percent foreign freshmen this academic year, more than twice that of five years ago. And at top private schools including Columbia University, Boston University and the University of Pennsylvania, at least 15 percent of this year’s freshmen are from other countries.

All told, the number of undergraduates from China alone has soared to 57,000 from 10,000 five years ago. At the University of Washington, 11 percent of the nearly 5,800 freshmen are from China.

A few places have begun to charge international students additional fees besides tuition: at Purdue University, it was $1,000 this year and will double next year; engineering undergraduates at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign had to pay a $2,500 surcharge this year.

“We’re in something akin to the gold rush, a frontier-style environment where colleges and universities, like prospectors in the 1800s, realize that there is gold out there,” said David Hawkins, the director of public policy at the National Association for College Admission Counseling. “While it’s the admissions offices butting up against the issues most right now, every department after them, every faculty member who comes into contact with international students, is going to have to recalibrate as institutions become more international. I see a cascading list of challenges.”

They have already begun here at Washington’s flagship university, where orientation leaders last fall had to explain, repeatedly, the rigorous campus recycling practices, reinforce no-smoking rules and, at the make-your-own-sundae bar, help people get the hang of the whipped-cream cans.

But there are deeper issues, like how much latitude professors should give in written assignments.

“We recognize that people from other countries often speak with an accent,” said John Webster, director of writing at the university’s College of Arts and Science. “If we’re truly going to be a global university, which I think is a terrific thing, we have to recognize that they may write with an accent as well.”

For example, because Mandarin has one word for “he,” “she” and “it” and nothing like “a” or “the,” many Chinese speakers struggle with pronouns and articles. And English verb forms, like past participles, gerunds and infinitives, can be difficult to master, since Chinese verbs are unchanging.

Given that Chinese students’ writing will be “accented” for years, Mr. Webster believes that professors should focus less on trying to make their English technically correct and more on making their essays understandable and interesting. But he knows this could be a controversial issue, reminiscent of the Ebonics debate decades ago.

The international influx is likely to keep growing, in part because of the booming recruiting industry that has sprung up overseas. That includes the use of commissioned agents, who help students through the admissions process — and sometimes write their application essays. Amid controversy over such agents, Mr. Hawkins’s group has named a commission, to meet for the first time next month, to formulate a policy regarding recruiters.

Nationwide, higher education financing has undergone a profound shift in recent years, with many public institutions that used to get most of their financing from state governments now relying on tuition for more than half their budgets. But legislators and taxpayers still feel deep ownership of the state institutions created to serve homegrown students — and worry that something is awry when local high achievers, even valedictorians, are rejected by the campuses they have grown up aspiring to.

“My constituents want a slot for their kid,” said Reuven Carlyle, a Democrat state representative from Seattle. “I hear it at the grocery store every day, and I’ve got four young kids myself, so I get it.

“We are struggling with capacity, access and affordability,” he said. “But international engagement is part of our state’s DNA. We have a special economic and social relationship with China, and I am happy to have so many Chinese students at the university.”

Still, Jim Allen, a counselor at Inglemoor High School in Kenmore, Wash., an affluent suburb north of Seattle, said: “Families are frustrated. There aren’t as many private colleges here as in the East, and a lot of families expect their children to go to U.W.”

Unlike many other state universities, the University of Washington did no overseas recruiting before this academic year, when it staged recruiting tours in several countries. So the rapid growth in international applications — to more than 6,000 this year from 1,541 in 2007, with China by far the largest source — was something of a surprise. Last spring, another surprise was the percentage who accepted offers of admission: 42 percent decided to enroll, up from 35 percent the previous year.

“As best I can make out, it’s just word of mouth,” said Mr. Ballinger, the admissions dean. “We’re well known in China, we’re highly rated on the Shanghai rankings, and we have a lot of contacts.”

Applications from abroad present some special challenges. Because the SAT is not given in mainland China, the university does not require international students to take it. Although it does not pay recruiting agents, Mr. Ballinger said he knew many applicants hired them, so the university does not consider Chinese applicants’ personal essays or recommendations. (Yes, he also knows that some affluent applicants in the United States get extensive help from paid private counselors.)

Some in-state students said they had trouble knowing what to make of the fact that international students, on the one hand, help underwrite financial aid, and on the other, take up seats that might have gone to their high school classmates.

“Morally, I feel the university should accept in-state students first, then other American students, then international students,” said Farheen Siddiqui, a freshman from Renton, Wash., just south of Seattle. “When I saw all the stories about U.W. taking more international students, I thought, ‘Damn, I’m a minority now for being in-state.’ ”

Actually, nearly two-thirds of Ms. Siddiqui’s classmates are from Washington, but her inaccurate sense of the population was echoed by all of the three dozen freshmen interviewed — including those from other states and from China. Most, like Ms. Siddiqui, estimated that half to two-thirds of the class was international.

Ms. Siddiqui cited a psychology class in which the professor asked the 600-plus students about the nature of the families they grew up in. With clickers recording the responses, Ms. Siddiqui said, about 60 percent said their families were “collectivist,” rather than “individualist,” something she perceived as more Asian than American.
Alison Luo, who grew up in Chongqing, a major city in southwest China, had mixed feelings about the trend that she is part of.

“Before I came, I saw the online chatting in China, with hundreds of people coming to the University of Washington,” Ms. Luo said. “I was kind of worried about that. I paid to study abroad, and it was almost like I was studying in China.”

Those who think hispanics are one unified tribe with identical open-borders interests should ponder the Florida Republican primary election returns. Mitt Romney, the strongest pro-enforcement candidate we have, won 54 percent of the hispanic vote to the consternation of political leaders who say pandering to latinos about immigration and promising amnesty is required for Republicans to succeed.

Newt Gingrich, the slick hispander artist with limited interest in immigrant assimilation, scored poorly with only 14 percent of the treasured latino vote.

Naturally it helps that many Florida hispanic voters are Cubans and lean conservative. Still, the voting stats are a reminder that hispanic citizens are a diverse group, some of whom count jobs and the economy as their top concerns along with the rest of us.

Romney wins big among Hispanics in Florida primary, Washington Times, February 1, 2012

LAS VEGAS — Mitt Romney took a hard-line position on immigration into the Florida primary Tuesday and emerged victorious, signaling that his stance isn’t costing him yet, though it could still be a problem if he’s the GOP’s presidential nominee in November.

Mr. Romney won overwhelmingly among Hispanics in Florida, collecting 54 percent of their votes, according to exit polling conducted for the Associated Press and the major television networks. That’s even better than he did among non-Hispanic voters.

Newt Gingrich trailed well behind with 14 percent of the Hispanic vote.

Both Mr. Gingrich and immigrant-rights groups attacked Mr. Romney in Florida, arguing his rhetoric on immigration crossed the line. Mr. Gingrich ran an ad calling Mr. Romney “anti-immigrant” — drawing a stern rebuke from the GOP’s senior Hispanic lawmaker, Sen. Marco Rubio, who said the charge was out-of-bounds.

“We need to push back very strongly against this idea that unless you agree with the left’s specific ideas about immigration, somehow you’re anti-immigrant. I mean, that’s ridiculous,” Mr. Rubio said earlier this week on The Washington Times-affiliated “America’s Morning News” program. “Just because I don’t agree with some radical left-wing plan to deal with immigration doesn’t make someone anti-immigrant.”

Mr. Rubio called for a thoughtful discussion on a middle-ground solution to the issue.
Mr. Romney has called for illegal immigrants to be given a time to get their affairs in order and then be sent home, where they could join the regular lines to enter legally, but would not be ahead of those who have been waiting properly.

The only exception he makes is for illegal immigrant youths and young adults who are prepared to serve in the U.S. military, whom he would give a quick path to citizenship.

But he has stated forcefully that he would veto the Dream Act, which President Obama backs, and which would give illegal immigrant children and young adults a path to citizenship if they take college classes.

Some illegal immigrants who could benefit from the Dream Act have dogged Mr. Romney at events over the last month, heckling him from afar or, when they can get close enough, confronting him.

“I’m undocumented — I’m wondering why aren’t you supporting my dream,” one woman asked him at an event in New York.

Mr. Romney’s showing in Florida among Hispanics in the primary showed that those already inclined to vote for Republicans will likely be able to get behind Mr. Romney. But still to be seen is whether his stance will hurt him with the broader Hispanic population.

Mr. McCain won 31 percent of Hispanic voters in the 2008 election, down from President George W. Bush’s take of more than 40 percent in his 2004 re-election bid. Analysts say the Republican nominee in 2012 will likely have to approach that 40 percent threshold if he is to win the White House.

Hispanic activists remain wary of Mr. Obama’s record over the last three years, saying he has deported more people per year than any other president, and that he failed to make good on his pledge to push for immigration his first year in office.
Mr. Obama, though, counters that he’s better than any of the GOP’s potential alternatives.

Mr. Romney isn’t the only one banking on winning Hispanic voters in the primary. Rep. Ron Paul’s campaign argues he can win among the growing population, and aims to prove that in Nevada, which holds its caucuses on Saturday.

But Mr. Paul will have to improve dramatically on his Florida showing. He won just 5 percent of Hispanic voters’ support, according to the exit polls — behind Mr. Romney, Mr. Gingrich and even former Sen. Rick Santorum.

The interview below is the most honesty about Islam I can recall seeing on Fox News. Sun TV host Michael Coren appeared on Monday to comment on the guilty verdict in the honor killing trial of an Afghan father, wife and son who murdered three daughters and a polygamous wife #2 for becoming too westernized.

Coren pointed out that the police and media are afraid to connect such crimes with Islam, and made the distinction that honor killings are not some sort of domestic violence. He called honor killing “intrinsic to Islam” and noted that the “vast majority occur within the context of the Muslim faith.” Furthermore, honor killings are not even a crime in many Muslim countries.

Also noteworthy, Coren described how Muslims are permitted to lie to infidels in order to protect Islam. What a religion. How much more Islamic diversity can the West stand?

(The AP report about the trial’s verdict is here.)

Coren’s own show In The Arena has welcomed politically incorrect guests like immigration critic Peter Brimelow and others you never see on American television.

Candidate Newt Gingrich certainly knows his target audience of hispanics, in particular that immigrants come for the Yankee dollar only, not to become assimilated Americans as earlier generations did.

As an example, Pew researchers found that among young second-generation hispanics, 62 percent identified themselves according to their ancestral home country or as hispanic/latino, not as Americans. By the third generation, only half self-identify as Americans. Raza diversity is strong.

The recent kerfuffle about whether Gingrich called Spanish a ghetto language included a revealing explanation for why he wants newbies to learn English, namely so they can make more money.

Note how Gingrich carefully chose the words of his response to the controversy to reflect the focused concerns of hispanic immigrants, who want loads of money but don’t want to become Americans:

‘Language of the ghetto’ not Spanish, Newt says, Politico, January 29, 2012

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich on Sunday defended years-old remarks that have been interpreted as suggesting that Spanish is “the language of the ghetto,” saying they’ve been twisted by his opponent for political gain.
After a back-and-forth at a debate last week with rival Mitt Romney over the comments he made in 2007, Gingrich tried to make clear on “Fox News Sunday” that he wasn’t talking about Spanish. ”I never used the word Spanish in the conversation,” he said.

Still, Gingrich issued an apology in Spanish, creating the impression that he was talking about the language, which is spoken by a substantial proportion of the Florida primary electorate. “I wasn’t talking about any single language,” he said Sunday. “Go back and read the text. I didn’t reference any single language. English should be the language of every single student because it is the language” needed to “get ahead in America.”

“We don’t want anyone trapped in America not able to speak English because English is the language of commercial success and gives you a better job,” Gingrich said. Romney “turned that on its head and said something that was simply not true” in running an ad suggesting that Gingrich was specifically referring to Spanish.

Gingrich also tried to explain his use of the word “ghetto,” telling host Chris Wallace: “As you know well, ghetto was originally a term for Jewish neighborhoods in the Middle Ages.”

He could have said that knowledge of English is key to understanding and accepting American culture and values, but he didn’t.

It’s certainly true that speaking English opens up the employment universe to newbies, but that’s not the only reason to learn it.

Gingrich hopes that his little ruse won’t be noticed by the majority of citizens who actually believe that immigrants should join the national community of Americans and not be economic opportunists. A 2011 Rasmussen poll found “An overwhelming majority (73%) of voters say people who move to the United States from other parts of the world should adopt America’s culture, language and heritage.”

In addition, Gingrich uses his nuanced strategy to reach interested parties like Univision TV, Spanish-language radio, “bilingual” teachers and the Catholic church, all of which benefit from maintaining their piece of separate tribal turf.

Finally, it’s amusing to hear Newt rail against “elites” when his views on the dollar-sign primacy of the English language reflect their economic-assimilation values perfectly.

If Gingrich genuinely does represent majority opinion, then he should state unequivocally that speaking English is basic to becoming an assimilated and loyal American citizen.

On Saturday, Archbishop George Niederauer and a gaggle of open-borders enthusiasts (including gay Assemblyman Tom Ammiano) held a big confab at a San Francisco cathedral to complain about government deportation of criminal aliens. (Watch a local television news story here.)

Several reports of the event use the word “dragnet” which implies mass round-ups, e.g. California’s Catholic hierarchy takes stand against illegal-immigration dragnet in the Contra Costa Times.

On the contrary, the persons affected are already jailbirds. The policy being condemned is Secure Communities, a common-sense program where the immigration status of arrested persons is checked along with their previous criminal history using a federal database. Deporting them removes dangerous persons from the country.

The friends of crime diversity despise Secure Communities because it is a powerful tool in identifying and deporting invasive foreigners. The squawkers are happy to sacrifice public safety in order to advantage unfriendly invaders. In fact, a raza campaign against effective policing to protect citizens from crime has been going on for some time.

The move to dismantle police protection also extends to California lawmakers. The aforementioned Assembly member Tom Ammiano is about to submit legislation to undermine Secure Communities. (See California bill seeks to limit detention of arrestees facing deportation, LA Times, Jan 28.)

In addition, the timing of Niederauer’s event seemed crude, given that the San Francisco trial of Edwin Ramos is about to enter its second week. Ramos was the previously arrested (but not deported because of the city sanctuary policy) illegal alien accused of murdering Tony Bologna and his two sons in a mistaken-identity gang killing.

Here’s a report about the Archbishop’s shenanigans against law and order.

SF archbishop speaks against immigration program, Associated Press, January 28, 2012

A federal program that checks the immigration status of people booked into local jails is tearing immigrant families apart, the head of the Roman Catholic Church in San Francisco said at an interfaith gathering on Saturday.

“We cannot allow the pain of family separation and the fear amongst our communities to continue,” Archbishop George Niederauer said in comments directed against the federal Secure Communities program. “We need to respect the dignity of all our sisters and brothers, undocumented or not.”

Under the program, the fingerprints of individuals who are booked into jails are checked against the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency’s database. Those found to be in the country illegally face deportation.

More than 1,700 jurisdictions participate in the program, which has resulted in the deportation of more than 110,000 immigrants convicted of crimes, according to ICE.

But critics say the program has also ensnared people with no prior criminal convictions or those arrested for relatively minor violations.

“This program results in our brothers and sisters being sent to a detention center because they were stopped for as little as a traffic violation,” said Moises Agudo, a member of the San Francisco Archdiocese who also spoke at Saturday’ event.

The gathering at St. Mary’s Cathedral was attended by hundreds of people, many of them Hispanic immigrants.

ICE says it prioritizes the removal of illegal immigrants who pose the greatest threat to public safety and those who have repeatedly violated immigration laws. Of the more than 110,000 immigrants deported under the program, over 39,000 were convicted of aggravated felonies such as murder, rape and the sexual abuse of children, according to ICE.

But some local communities and states are not convinced. San Francisco and nearby Santa Clara County have sought permission from the federal government to opt out. And California considered legislation last year that would only let local communities participate in the program if they choose to do so through a resolution.

The bill was sponsored by San Francisco Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, who attended Saturday’s gathering and said he plans to introduce similar legislation within 30 days.

“I believe my bill will reform the ICE act and the injustices they have perpetrated on all our people,” Ammiano said. “Together we can do this, together we are powerful.”

It would be the sort of “earned citizenship” program that politicians of both parties like way too much.

However, not all the diverse recruits are friendlies.

Consider a recent criminal case which came to resolution on Thursday. An ex-Marine pleaded guilty to the crime of shooting up the Pentagon causing over $100K in damage, which will likely get him sentenced to 25 years in prison. He managed to produce a film of himself firing the shots while he yelled “Allah Ackbar.”

The shooter, Yonathan Melaku (pictured), was an Ethiopian who came here as a child and graduated from Thomas Edison High School in Franconia, Virginia. He had plenty of opportunity to assimilate, but chose the path of the enemy.

Melaku is not the first diverse military guy to go bad by a long shot. Surely the worst is the accused mass murderer of Fort Hood, Major Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist who benefited from the idea that in the modern military, diversity is among the top values.

Another noteworthy aspect to this case is the media’s studied stupidity about the reason for the crime. The Washington Post titled a Jan 26 article, “Motive of shooter who targeted military sites is unclear”. The piece even mentions the perp shouting “Allahu Akbar!”

Apparently the press prefers mental illness as an explanation. An alien culture with 1400 years of warfare against outsiders doesn’t suit their multicultural ideology.

Accused Pentagon shooter Melaku pleads guilty, Associated Press, January 26, 2012

An ex-Marine from Virginia pleaded guilty Thursday and has agreed to serve a 25-year prison sentence on charges that he fired a series of overnight pot shots in 2010 at the Pentagon, the Marine Corps museum in Quantico and other military targets as part of what prosecutors called a campaign to strike fear throughout the region.

Prosecutors also revealed Thursday new details about Yonathan Melaku’s intended next target: Arlington National Cemetery, where he was arrested before he was able to carry out a plan to deface gravestones there.

As part of Thursday’s plea deal, Melaku, 24, of Alexandria, pleaded guilty to destruction of U.S. property, use of a firearm in an act of violence and intention to injure a veterans’ memorial, namely the cemetery. Prosecutors and Melaku’s lawyer agreed to a 25-year sentence as part of the deal, and U.S. District Judge Gerald Bruce Lee said he would agree to the sentence as well.

Formal sentencing was delayed until April so a pre-sentence report can be prepared and Melaku’s lawyer can request a mental-health evaluation for his client.

Prosecutors also released a video, made by Melaku, that was part of the evidence in the case, in which Melaku is seen firing shots at the National Museum of the Marine Corps as he drives by from I-95, where the museum is easily visible. In the video, Melaku shouts “God is Great!” in Arabic and talks about targeting the museum and “turning it off permanently.”

The overnight shootings in October and November of 2010 twice targeted the Marine Corps museum and once each targeted the Pentagon and military recruiting stations in Woodbridge and Chantilly.

The shootings raised a high level of concerns, prompting authorities to suspect they were related and conducted by an individual with a grievance against the military in general or the Marines specifically.

But the shootings went unsolved until this summer, when Melaku — a naturalized U.S. citizen from Ethiopia — was spotted by police on Fort Myer and ran off, leaving a backpack behind. He was later caught and arrested at Arlington National Cemetery. The incident prompted a massive security scare in and around the Pentagon.

In the backpack police found spent shell casings; five pounds of ammonium nitrate, a common material in homemade explosives; two cans of spray paint; and a notebook in Arabic that contained references to Osama bin Laden, the Taliban and the “path to jihad.”

Melaku eventually admitted to authorities that he planned to desecrate grave markers in the cemetery by spraying Arabic graffiti on them, and to deliberately leave the ammonium nitrate behind.

Nobody was hurt in any of the incidents, but Melaku has been ordered to make $111,000 in restitution for the damage he caused to the buildings, including the Pentagon.

Though no one was hurt, FBI spokeswoman Jacqueline Maguire called the case serious, and credited investigators for arresting Melaku before he did worse. She noted that a search of Melaku’s home produced evidence that Melaku was looking to build a homemade timer.

The defense lawyer, Gregory English, said he has no doubt that his client is legally sane, but said a proper mental-health diagnosis may help his client become a better person while he serves his sentence.

English, himself a former Marine, said after the hearing that his personal experience suggests it’s possible that some sort of post-traumatic stress or dispute with the Marines may have triggered Melaku’s actions rather than any desire to support al-Qaida or the Taliban.

“The facts of the case and what his parents are saying to me about the young man suggests these actions are totally out of character,” English said.

Dana Boente, the top assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, which prosecuted the case, said authorities have no evidence that Melaku suffers from any serious mental-health disorders or that his years in the Marine reserves provided a motive for the crime. He said Melaku never served overseas.

Boente called the crimes “a campaign of calculated and sustained attacks against military installations and memorials in northern Virginia.”

Melaku did not speak during the hearing, except to answer a series of questions from the judge with a soft-spoken, “Yes, sir” and a final “guilty, sir” to formally enter his plea.

Former Senator Rick Santorum observed the other day that universities are indoctrination factories of liberalism. That’s hardly news, but discussing the obvious is becoming more necessary in these conflicted times.

Rick Santorum: Left uses college for “indoctrination”, CBS, January 25, 2012

Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum said Wednesday that “the left” uses universities to indoctrinate young people for the purpose of “holding and maintaining power.”

After saying “we’ve lost, unfortunately, our entertainment industry,” Santorum told a Naples, Florida, audience that “we’ve lost our higher education, that was the first to go a long time ago.”

“It’s no wonder President Obama wants every kid to go to college,” said the former Pennsylvania senator. “The indoctrination that occurs in American universities is one of the keys to the left holding and maintaining power in America. And it is indoctrination. If it was the other way around, the ACLU would be out there making sure that there wasn’t one penny of government dollars going to colleges and universities, right?”

But it’s worse than that. These days, the brainwashing starts in grade school because the increasing dropout rate among the diverse means that many will not make it to college and a major in ethnic or chicano studies. One example is the nationwide pattern of little kids who were made to sing worshipful songs about Obama after his election.

More recently, some Virginia third-graders supposedly penned a complex political ditty in praise of the Occupy activities, with lyrics like “I’m part of the 99″ and “They’re the one percent.” It seemed far too advanced for nine-year-olds to have produced, and an adult later fessed up that he wrote the song.

When I attended the 9th Circuit Court in November 2010 to observe the legal proceedings concerning Arizona’s enforcement law, there were lots of non-hispanic kids waving signs in favor of open borders and other raza issues. I talked to a blond boy and he told me it was a class project of their Berkeley middle school to attend, and not just as observers. Below is one of my photos from the event.

The years-long struggle in Arizona against the anti-American raza studies program in Tucson High School continues to bubble along. The legislature passed a law against the teaching of racist and seditious subjects in public schools which took effect at the beginning of 2011. A local court later determined that the law was proper.

Unsurprisingly, the indoctrinated kiddies hate having their daily dose of Mexican supremacism removed and continue to squawk wherever there’s a forum with the help of raza-promoting adults.

The New York Times is shocked and appalled that around 1500 of the city’s police have been shown “The Third Jihad,” a documentary produced by Zuhdi Jasser about the threat posed by the murderous ideology of Islam.

More generally, the Times is unhappy with the NYPD for its surveillance activities in mosques and Muslim neighborhoods required to keep the city safe from men who desire to mass murder infidels. Naturally the fifth column bunch at the Council of American Islamic Relations and elsewhere are actively working against homeland security in this country, and the liberal media is standing on their side rather than the safety of Americans.

The film shows hostile Muslims declaring their intention of conquering the entire world and controlling it according to the authoritarian sharia law of Islam. Every American should know Islam’s to-do list, and police officers even more so.

Below, a screen snap from the documentary.

Here is the film. If this link doesn’t work you can watch the documentary on the website The Third Jihad.

The Times complains that the film is “Dark” but the atmospherics are determined by the subject. Just because not every Muslim is a throat-slitting jihadist, the Times believes we should not discuss the millions worldwide who are.

Of course, diverse immigration that increasingly admits Muslims by the thousands every year has brought the threat into our own country. The press does not want to connect those dots at all.

In Police Training, a Dark Film on U.S. Muslims, New York Times, January 23, 2012

Ominous music plays as images appear on the screen: Muslim terrorists shoot Christians in the head, car bombs explode, executed children lie covered by sheets and a doctored photograph shows an Islamic flag flying over the White House.

“This is the true agenda of much of Islam in America,” a narrator intones. “A strategy to infiltrate and dominate America. … This is the war you don’t know about.”

This is the feature-length film titled “The Third Jihad,” paid for by a nonprofit group, which was shown to more than a thousand officers as part of training in the New York Police Department.

In January 2011, when news broke that the department had used the film in training, a top police official denied it, then said it had been mistakenly screened “a couple of times” for a few officers.

A year later, police documents obtained under the state’s Freedom of Information Law reveal a different reality: “The Third Jihad,” which includes an interview with Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly, was shown, according to internal police reports, “on a continuous loop” for between three months and one year of training.

During that time, at least 1,489 police officers, from lieutenants to detectives to patrol officers, saw the film.

News that police trainers showed this film so extensively comes as the department wrestles with its relationship with the city’s large Muslim community. The Police Department offers no apology for aggressively spying on Muslim groups and says it has ferreted out terror plots.

But members of the City Council, civil rights advocates and Muslim leaders say the department, in its zeal, has trampled on civil rights, blurred lines between foreign and domestic spying and sown fear among Muslims.

“The department’s response was to deny it and to fight our request for information,” said Faiza Patel, a director at the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University Law School, which obtained the release of the documents through a Freedom of Information request. “The police have shown an explosive documentary to its officers and simply stonewalled us.”

Tom Robbins, a former columnist with The Village Voice, first revealed that the police had screened the film. The Brennan Center then filed its request.

The 72-minute film was financed by the Clarion Fund, a nonprofit group whose board includes a former Central Intelligence Agency official and a deputy defense secretary for President Ronald Reagan. Its previous documentary attacking Muslims’ “war on the West” attracted support from the casino magnate Sheldon Adelson, a major supporter of Israel who has helped reshape the Republican presidential primary by pouring millions of dollars into a so-called super PAC that backs Newt Gingrich.

Commissioner Kelly is listed on the “Third Jihad” Web site as a “featured interviewee.” Paul J. Browne, the Police Department’s chief spokesman, wrote in an e-mail that filmmakers had lifted the clip from an old interview. The commissioner, Mr. Browne said, has not asked the filmmakers to remove him from its Web site, or to clarify that he had not cooperated with them.

None of the documents turned over to the Brennan Center make clear which police officials approved the showing of this film during training. Department lawyers blacked out large swaths of these internal memorandums.

Repeated calls over the past several days to the Clarion Fund, which is based in New York, were not answered. The nonprofit group shares officials with Aish HaTorah, an Israeli organization that opposes any territorial concessions on the West Bank. The producer of “The Third Jihad,” Raphael Shore, also works with Aish HaTorah.

Clarion’s financing is a puzzle. Its federal income tax forms show contributions, grants and revenues typically hover around $1 million annually — except in 2008, when it booked contributions of $18.3 million. That same year, Clarion produced “Obsession: Radical Islam’s War Against the West.” The Clarion Fund used its surge in contributions to pay to distribute tens of millions of copies of this DVD in swing electoral states across the country in September 2008.

“The Third Jihad” is quite similar, in style and content, to that earlier film. Narrated by Zuhdi Jasser, a Muslim doctor and former American military officer in Arizona, “The Third Jihad” casts a broad shadow over American Muslims. Few Muslim leaders, it states, can be trusted.

“Americans are being told that many of the mainstream Muslim groups are also moderate,” Mr. Jasser states. “When in fact if you look a little closer, you’ll see a very different reality. One of their primary tactics is deception.”

The film posits that there were three jihads: One at the time of Muhammad, a second in the Middle Ages and a third that is under way covertly throughout the West today.

This is, the film claims, “the 1,400-year war.”

How the film came to be used in police training, and even for how long, was not clear. An undated memorandum from the department’s commanding officer for specialized training noted that an employee of the federal Department of Homeland Security handed the DVD to the New York police in January 2010. Since then, this officer said, the video was shown continuously “during the sign-in, medical and administrative orientation process.” A Department of Homeland Security spokesman said it was never used in its curriculum, and might have come from a contractor.

As it turned out, it was police officers who blew the whistle after watching the film. Late in 2010, Mr. Robbins contacted an officer who spoke of his unease with the film; another officer, said Zead Ramadan, the New York president of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, talked of seeing it during a training session the previous summer. “The officer was completely offended by it as a Muslim,” Mr. Ramadan said. “It defiled our faith and misrepresented everything we stood for.”

When the news broke about the movie last year, Mr. Browne called it a “wacky film” that had been shown “only a couple of times when officers were filling out paperwork before the actual course work began.”

He made no more public comments. Privately, two days later, he asked the Police Academy to determine whether a terrorism awareness training program had used the video, according to the documents.

The academy’s commander reported back on March 23, 2011, that the film had been viewed by 68 lieutenants, 159 sergeants, 31 detectives and 1,231 patrol officers. The department never made those findings public.

And just one week later, the Brennan Center officially requested the same information, starting what turned out to be a nine-month legal battle to obtain it.

“It suggests a broader problem that they refuse to divulge this information much less to discuss it,” Ms. Patel of the Brennan Center said. “The training of the world’s largest city police force is an important question.”

Mr. Browne said he had been unaware of the higher viewership of the film until asked about it by The New York Times last week.

There is the question of the officers who viewed the movie during training. Mr. Browne said the Police Department had no plans to correct any false impressions the movie might have left behind.

“There’s no plan to contact officers who saw it,” he said, or to “add other programming as a result.”
