On June 10, 2000, a coalition of groups favoring amnesty for the six million foreigners illegally in the United States met in southern California for a major rally. The headline speaker for the crowd estimated at 15,000 the Archbishop of the Catholic Diocese of Los Angeles. Just two days before, Archbishop Roger Mahony published an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times (6/8/00) voicing humanitarian-sounding platitudes, calling for the legalization of immigrant workers and their families, especially those who come to the United States fleeing oppression and destitution. The fact that Archbishop Mahony advocated rewarding lawbreakers for their crimes did not seem important to him. At the rally, the Archbishop told the crowd in Spanish, You have my support and blessings during this long and difficult campaign. In supporting Latin American immigrants, the Archbishop is working to increase his market share. The Catholic Church has been struggling to maintain its membership as fewer American Catholics attend church. Therefore the Vatican looks to immigrants to keep its pews and coffers filled in the important American church. According to the National Conference of Catholic Bishops Office of Hispanic Affairs, since 1960 Hispanics have accounted for 71 percent of the growth in the U.S. Catholic Church. Furthermore, as the percentage of Catholics in the country increases along with rising numbers of Hispanics, so also will the Church's political influence. The Year 2000 Census revealed that the Latino population had increased 58 percent since 1990. By way of comparison, the nation's population as a whole increased by 13 percent. The Hispanic population explosion to more than 35 million puts them roughly at the same percentage of the U.S. as Black Americans years earlier than when the Census had estimated. It is interesting to note, however, that the Vatican attitude in its own neighborhood is quite different, as Italian Cardinal Giacomo Biffi has warned against the increasing influence of Muslims in Europe.
PUSHING OVERPOPULATION
The pamphlet urges Catholics to support increased immigration as a part of the Christian admonition to welcome the stranger. It contains many factual errors, such as statistics from the National Immigration Forum stating that immigrants pay more in taxes than they take in benefits. (See the information about costs from the Center for Immigration Studies for refutation.) An updated booklet with statements from the bishops has been placed online, Welcoming the Stranger Among Us: Unity in Diversity. It calls for legalization opportunities for the maximum number of undocumented persons. The Church elite evidently does not recognize overpopulation as a problem. The Vatican has historically rejected any effective birth control despite the fact that overpopulation and resource depletion increase poverty, something the Vatican says it opposes. The Vaticrats declare the needs of the poor supercede national interests, meaning that the Vatican actually condones and encourages lawbreaking illegal immigration. And although the Vatican is officially a country (including an ambassador from the U.S.), it accepts zero refugees. Furthermore, by promoting worldwide overpopulation, the Vatican is partially responsible for extreme species loss. Human overpopulation is now creating a major extinction, one of only six in the history of the planet. Between one-third and two-thirds of all plant and animal species, most in the tropics, will be lost by the second half of this century. Environmentalists consider such wanton destruction of so many plant and animal species to be a moral outrage why doesn't the Church? The scriptures call for stewardship over the earth, not its destruction.
