Apartments going empty as hiring law hits migrants [1/31/08]
The signs from Arizona continue to accumulate that attrition through workplace enforcement works. When the government removes the enticements of particularly jobs and also free social services, the foreigners will leave on their own.
Arizona's employer-sanctions law is driving illegal immigrants to leave the state, as intended.
Happy trails, Mexicans! When you get home, try to fix up your crappy (albeit wealthy) country with some much needed reforms. And when Mexicans get home, they will be protected by their government against being undercut for jobs by illegal foreign workers, the same sort of law about which they complain in Arizona.
The departures were first felt at stores and businesses that cater to such immigrants. Sales suddenly dropped.
Now, apartment complexes, especially those with affordable rents in neighborhoods with large immigrant populations, are feeling the effects. Individuals and entire families are moving, leaving behind empty apartments that can't be filled.
Some renters are handing over their keys and breaking leases because they've lost their jobs due to the sanctions law and can't pay the rent. Others are simply skipping out in the middle of the night.
"Most folks aren't even telling us; they are just leaving," said Estela Bojorquez, manager of the Villa de Sonora apartments in west Phoenix, which is trying to fill 59 vacant apartments out of a total of 156. Bojorquez attributes half of the vacancies to illegal immigrants moving out of the state because of the sanctions law. Job losses because of a slowdown in the economy - especially in housing construction, which employs many immigrants - also are contributing to the departures.
"Hate Speech Cited in Immigration Debate" [1/31/08]
You can't make this stuff up. La Raza (aka "The Race") is complaining about "hate speech" among immigration restrictionists. The Razas are particularly miffed at the few members of the MSM who consistently tell the truth, particularly Lou Dobbs, Pat Buchanan and Glenn Beck.
A national Latino group said Thursday it is fighting back against what it considers to be "hate speech" that has emerged from the debate over immigration.
According to La Raza, it is hate speech to mention facts like the belief of many Mexicans that the southwest belongs to them; in fact, the reputable Zogby polling organization found in 2002 that 58 percent of Mexicans agree with that idea.
National Council of La Raza President Janet Murguia announced plans to pressure television network executives and candidates seeking their parties' presidential nominations to clamp down on such remarks.
The group launched a Web site to counter the speech, www.wecanstopthehate.org, with clips of what it considers offensive comments on television as well as a tracking of hate crimes.
Mexicans have essentially declared war on America, but their fifth column in this country gets bent out of shape when they are called to account for their treason.
In response, Gilchrist called the National Council of La Raza a racial supremacy group that "dwarfs the combination of Black Panthers, KKK, American Indian Movement and Asian gangs."
"I'm exercising free speech and I'm giving my opinion," Gilchrist said. "My son-in-law is Mexican and two of my three grandchildren are half Mexican. The Minuteman Project is comprised of every race color and creed."
Presidential election: Among GOP voters, ire over illegal immigration [1/30/08]
Remember when shopping was safe, and you weren't harassed by a hoard of Mexicans trying to crawl into your car? Welcome to Mexifornia.
ORANGE - In a state where illegal immigration is among the most important Republican election issues, in one of the state's most Republican counties, a battle has been raging in an Albertsons parking lot.
Invasive shopping -- part of the new diversity we can celebrate, thanks to open borders!
At Chapman Avenue and Hewes Street, dozens of day laborers - many of whom are illegal immigrants - have been swarming mothers driving SUVs as they pull in to buy groceries, fed-up locals complain. Women say they are nervous to drop off laundry at the dry cleaners next door and men heading into the Ace Hardware are reluctant to leave their tools in the back of their pickup trucks.
Mexico entered U.S. 25 times last year [1/30/08]
Is Mexico really a friendly neighbor as Presidente Bush maintains? Evidence indicates otherwise, that Mexico is in fact an intractable enemy.
At a time when violence in Juárez is affecting El Paso, a report released Monday showed that Mexican police and soldiers made 25 incursions into the United States in 2007, including two in El Paso.
Judicial Watch report here.
The Border Patrol documents, obtained by Judicial Watch, a conservative watchdog group in Washington, D.C., said that 21 of the incidents involved Mexican police officials and four incidents involved Mexican military personnel.
Overpopulation issue overlooked by presidential candidates [1/30/08]
Washington was certainly diminished as a credible source of public policy when Sen. Gaylord Nelson retired from the Senate. He died in July 2005, and the world has been made poorer for his loss. (See my obituary in VDARE.com.)
Sadly, there is no one in political life -- and certainly no Presidential candidate -- who will talk about the enormous problems caused by overpopulation, both foreign and domestic.
I kept thinking that at some point during the long, laborious process to elect our next president it was bound to happen. But now, after more than 20 debates and with the election just 10 months away, it has dawned on me that none of the candidates -- or any of the media -- is going to bring up what the late Gaylord Nelson, the former Wisconsin senator and governor and the father of Earth Day, felt was the most urgent issue that humanity faces: overpopulation. [...]
The arena in which local overpopulation is felt most immediately is in water supply. A rainy winter has lessened the drought crisis in California and the southwest generally, but parts of the southeast still suffer from Exceptional drought (map and animations). See Water Supply: Where the Overpopulation Rubber Hits the Road.
And while they've talked about the economic and social impacts of current U.S. immigration policy, none of them has mentioned that immigration is the chief reason the United States has added 100 million people since the first Earth Day in 1970, swelling our population to 303 million. (Dane County, the fastest growing county in Wisconsin, is expected to add 150,000 people by 2030.)
Moreover, none has suggested that runaway population growth -- both globally and in this country -- is perhaps something we should all be concerned about. [...]
Unchecked growth, as Gaylord Nelson liked to point out, creates tremendous strains on our natural resources and our infrastructure. It boosts the need for more schools, more hospitals, more police stations, more roads, more prisons. "In other words, more of everything," he would say.
Another problem with population growth, a non-environmental one, is keeping up with infrastructure. In California, college applications to the UC system are at a record high.
"Women’s Rights Body in Pipeline" [1/29/08]
Every time I check out the Arab News website, I remind myself I need to look in more often. You can't make up better headlines than the one here.
Anyway, it's good news that women are bravely getting together to stand up for themselves in the land of head-choppy.

Clinton's Risky Gamble [1/29/08]
Columnist Robert Novak writes that the Clintons are willing to throw black Americans under the bus in order to grab the votes of hispanics.
Sen. Hillary Clinton is relying on the big Latino vote as her firewall to prevent her losing the Feb. 5 primary in California, the most important of 22 states contested on the Democratic side on Mega Tuesday. But that reliance, both pro-Clinton and anti-Clinton Democrats say, is fraught with peril for the Democratic Party coalition because it threatens to alienate its essential African American component.
It wouldn't take much to gin up hostility of hispanic immigrants against black US citizens. In places like Los Angeles, Mexican gangsters have been conducting a campaign of racial intimidation and violence to force blacks out -- ethnic cleansing, in other words.
Clinton's double-digit lead in California polls over Sen. Barack Obama is misleading. Subtract a Latino voting bloc whose dependability to show up on Election Day always has been shaky, and Clinton is no better than even here, with Obama gaining. To encourage this firewall, the Clinton campaign may be drifting into encouragement of Hispanic vs. black racial conflict by condoning Latino hostility toward the first African American with a chance to become president.
There's not much of black-brown solidarity anyway, judging also from a quote a few weeks ago that went around...
A few weeks ago, Sergio Bendixen, a Clinton pollster and Latino expert, publicly articulated what campaign officials appear to have been whispering for months. In an interview with Ryan Lizza of the New Yorker, Bendixen explained that "the Hispanic voter -- and I want to say this very carefully -- has not shown a lot of willingness or affinity to support black candidates."
The "rainbow coalition" was always a political pipe dream, and a racist one at that.
Language barrier played role in response to Cosco Busan spill [1/28/08]
In the San Francisco Bay Area, the Nov 7 oil spill was a big deal, with many beautiful beaches ruined for months if not longer. Now we learn the Coast Guard was slowed by not being able to understand the Chinese perp crew -- diversity is our strength!
Airline pilots are required to speak English in order to fly into US airports -- why isn't there a similar requirement for ocean-going shipping?
Coast Guard officials who boarded the Cosco Busan to determine how much oil had spilled into the San Francisco Bay had trouble communicating with the Chinese-speaking crew - and ultimately had to use drawings and hand gestures.
The new detail, contained in the first major report on the response to the Nov. 7 oil spill, helps explain why the Coast Guard came up with the faulty initial estimate of 140 gallons - far short of the 58,000 gallons that were later reported to have leaked into the Bay.
The report, ordered by the Coast Guard, was being released today at a news conference on Treasure Island.
The initial low estimate was a key factor in the response of the early hours of Nov. 7, after the ship struck the bridge, tearing a 100-foot long gash in its hull. The report found that many Bay Area officials did not take the spill seriously because it appeared to be minor.
Obama takes big risk on driver's license issue [1/28/08]
Not smart politics or public policy either on the part of candidate Obama to support drivers licenses for illegal aliens. Didn't he notice that a California governor (Gray Davis) was recalled from office largely for doing that very thing? Hillary got seriously spanked a couple months back for her recommendation of DLs for illegal foreigners, which she soon withdrew. A Rasmussen poll last fall found that 77 percent of adults surveyed opposed drivers licenses for illegal immigrants.
A state license is an ID card that gives the holder keys to the kingdom and is practically an amnesty in itself, not to mention being a huge national security threat.
Sen. Barack Obama easily won the African American vote in South Carolina, but to woo California Latinos, where he is running 3-to-1 behind rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, he is taking a giant risk: spotlighting his support for the red-hot issue of granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.
Even Democrat advisors regard the issue as a loser.
It's a huge issue for Latinos, who want them. It's also a huge issue for the general electorate, which most vehemently does not. Obama's stand could come back to haunt him not only in a general election, but with other voters in California, where driver's licenses for illegal immigrants helped undo former Gov. Gray Davis.
Clinton stumbled into that minefield in a debate last fall and quickly backed off. First she suggested a New York proposal for driver's licenses for illegal immigrants might be reasonable. Then she denied endorsing the idea, and later came out against them.
Democratic pollsters Stan Greenberg and James Carville issued a direct warning on the driver's license issue in an analysis last month designed to guide Democrats through the treacherous immigration quagmire.
"The findings about driver's licenses are particularly notable," they said. Two-thirds of surveyed voters oppose them, the pollsters found, and the safety argument fails to dent the widespread conviction that granting a driver's license rewards illegal behavior.
Europeans Think Islam Is Dangerous [1/27/08]
Are somnambulant Euro-weenies finally waking up to the threat of Islamist immigration? Not that it would do much good, given the increasingly undemocratic nature of the EU.
AN “overwhelming majority” of Europeans believe immigration from Islamic countries is a threat to their traditional way of life, a survey revealed last night.
Meanwhile, as the elites politely converse at the lofty Davos conclave about globalist topics, member of the Dutch Parliament Geert Wilders (pictured) lives under 24/7 police protection because he has spoken out against Muslim immigration. He has received more threats than usual because he is helping produce a film for Dutch TV about the danger. See Geert Wilders Speaks Out about Anti-Koran Film for an honest discussion (despite a terrible interviewer from Fox News). Wilders says that European culture is better than murderous, misogynous Islam, and for that is called "far right."
The poll, carried out across 21 countries, found “widespread anti-immigration sentiment”, but warned Europe’s Muslim population will treble in the next 17 years.
It reported “a severe deficit of trust is found between the Western and Muslim communities”, with most people wanting less interaction with the Muslim world.
Last night an MP warned it showed that political leaders in Britain who preach the benefits of unlimited immigration were dangerously out of touch with the public.
The study, whose authors include the former Archbishop of Canterbury Lord Carey, was commissioned for leaders at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
The news that Wilders was producing a film about Islamic immigration put the Netherlands government into a state of hysteria, apparently fearing violence and an uptick in terrorism. Wilders is a stalwart defender of free speech against stifling political correctness, which runs against the Dutch value of compromise: In defence of the right to offend.
The Netherlands has spent the past several weeks in a political crisis out of a novel by Borges. People are worried that a politician might say something he has already said. And they are divided over how to interpret a film that may not exist. Last August, the anti-immigration legislator, Geert Wilders, wrote in the daily De Volkskrant: "I've had enough of Islam in the Netherlands - not one more Muslim immigrant. I've had enough of Allah and Mohammed in the Netherlands - not one more mosque." Mr Wilders, whose Freedom party controls 9 of the 150 seats in the Dutch lower house, also urged banning the Koran, which he calls "the Islamic Mein Kampf ".
Mr. Wilders sensibly wants Muslim immigration to end. The European people apparently agree with him. The problem is the undemocratic political establishment which is not interested in what the people want in public policy -- just like here.
But his announcement in late November that he would make a short film to that effect sent the government into a panic. The cabinet met in secret. It ordered foreign embassies to draw up evacuation plans in case of mob violence. It put the mayors of Dutch cities on alert. It arranged meetings with imams and other Muslim representatives, distancing itself from Mr Wilders' positions. The interior, justice and foreign ministers summoned Mr Wilders to meetings, and the country's terrorism co-ordinator warned him that he might have to leave the country for his own security. The government reportedly investigated whether it would be possible to block or delay Mr Wilders's broadcast.
Thomason security remains tight [1/26/08]
In El Paso, a hospital is under lockdown conditions in order to protect a Mexican police commander from assassination by drug gangsters.
Why must American lives be endangered to do a favor for Mexico? It is ridiculous when the Mexican army has invaded US territory literally hundreds of times over the last decade. We owe them zero favors, to say the least.
Furthermore, as the article notes, US taxpayers are footing the bill for the wall of police protecting the hospital 24/7.
With Thomason Hospital still under lockdown to protect a Mexican police commander targeted for assassination, El Pasoans wonder whether the drug violence in Juárez is spilling to the U.S. side.

Mexico City Rolls Out Women-Only Buses [1/26/08]
Piggy-man alert! Mexico has apparently given up on its efforts to restrain male harassment and assault of women.
Back in 2006, the Mexican government pictured sex dolls dressed up as normal workers in a bizarre anti-machismo campaign -- which actually sent the message that all women are whores, I thought at the time.
Anyway, Mexican men have long gotten a relative pass on sexism because the Arabs are so much worse on the worldwide piggy-man scorecards. So the women-only buses of Mexico City are a useful reminder.
Groping and verbal harassment is an exasperating reality for women using public transportation in this sprawling capital, where 22 million passengers cram onto subways and buses each day. Some men treat women so badly that the subway system has long had ladies-only cars during rush hour, with police segregating the sexes on the platforms. [...]
Say, can we get American buses that will keep Mexican men off?
And while some men have complained that they have to wait longer for a bus, she said the women are thrilled: "The women are really happy and we have been getting a lot of e-mail and letters from them."
Juliana Romero, a 49-year-old secretary, said not riding with men is "fantastic."
"When the bus is packed, there will inevitably be a lecherous man who will bother you," she said.
Women-only buses or subways have been rolling for years in India, Brazil, Japan and other countries. Mexico City finally took the action as part of a growing responsiveness to complaints about discrimination against women, Montiel said.

Real Immigration Reform (PDF) [1/25/08]
Presidential candidates, please take this easy test! The no-nonsense Senator Jeff Sessions has prepared a quiz that boils down the complex issue of immigration enforcement to legislative choices that will determine the future of the country. There are 15 questions in all.
1. Border Fence and National Guard: If elected President, will you secure the border, including completing construction of the 700 mile southern border fence required by the Secure Fence Act, constructing more miles if
needed, and keeping the National Guard on the border until it is secured?
More info from a home-state paper: Sessions challenges candidates on immigration.
□ Yes or □ No
2. Border Prosecutions: If elected President, will you deter illegal entry by expanding the already successful Zero
Tolerance Prosecution Policy (Operation Streamline) from 3 to all 20 border sectors, and support statutory
mandatory minimums for the crimes of illegal entry, reentry, and reentry after deportation for any felony?
□ Yes or □ No
3. Control Visa Overstays: If elected President, will you give our immigration system integrity by completing the
10-year past due exit portion of The USVISIT (Visitor and Immigrant Status Indicator Technology) system and eliminate other weaknesses in the system so that future visa overstays can be identified?
□ Yes or □ No
Although his office has sent the plan to hopefuls in both parties, Sessions said afterward that he has not decided whether to go any further. While candidates say they want a lawful immigration system, he said, his purpose is "to put flesh on the bones" of those generalities.
See also the National Review for remarks about a recent Jeff Sessions talk at the Heritage Foundation: Immigration Sessions.
"These are things that, I think, if they'll commit to, will go a long way to creating a lawful system." Sessions put the package's total cost at "a few billion" dollars. Barely half of the border fence across parts of the U.S.'s southern border with Mexico will have been built by year's end.
He also expressed his belief that while the immigration problem is large, it is not overwhelming. “This is a problem that can be fixed. Yes, there will be some cost, but as the Congressional Budget Office and [Heritage Foundation welfare-policy expert] Robert Rector have clearly shown, the cost of not acting is far greater,” Sessions said. “Considering the high priority the American people put on this issue, this is not a heavy lift for Congress or any President. The key ingredient is a firm will and common sense.”
You can watch or listen to the Heritage speech online: Sen Jeff Sessions: Real Immigration Reform.
The immigration debate could have a profound impact on the outcome of the upcoming election. Sessions cited a Los Angeles Times/Bloomberg poll which showed that a candidate’s stand on illegal immigration would influence the decision of 80 percent of Americans on which candidate to support, and another poll showing that 33 percent of Republican caucus voters in Iowa said illegal immigration was the most important issue in the election — the number one issue they ranked.
The issue also cuts across party lines, Sessions said. “In late October a study by senior Democratic strategists — one of them James Carville, who is not naïve in these matters — found that for independents, [for] roughly a third of the voters the top issue is our borders having been left unprotected and illegal immigration growing,” he said.
Group Links Gang Activity in Va. to Illegal Immigrants [1/25/08]
Hispanic gangs have many illegal alien members -- what a surprise! But it is good to see the Washington Post admit that illegals are engaging in serious crime, and a lot of it.
Illegal immigrants are responsible for much of the gang activity in Virginia, and the relationship among local, state and federal law enforcement agencies should be strengthened to better address the problem, according to a study by a Washington think tank that advocates limits on immigration.
As the Post reports, the report has not yet been released in total. However, the CIS website has a helpful press release of info: Immigration Enforcement Disrupts Criminal Gangs in Virginia.
The Center for Immigration Studies has not released its 250-page report examining the relationship between illegal immigration and gang activity in the state, but representatives released several findings yesterday. The group plans to look at the issue on a national scale, but officials said it seemed logical to start in Virginia.
"Virginia is one of the states where there has been intense interest in addressing the illegal immigration problem, particularly the problem of illegal immigration and crime," said Jessica Vaughan, the lead investigator for the project. "It just seemed like a perfect case study."
25-50% of all gangsters arrested in northern and western Virginia are estimated to be deportable aliens. Gang investigators estimate that 90% of the members of MS-13, the most notorious immigrant gang, are illegal aliens.
As I've written previously (Homeowners: Don't Worry, Be Happy, Hire Illegals), it's crazy to allow a foreigner about whom you know nothing into your home. The polite Mexican gardener mowing your grass could have been a child-raping murderer back home, or may be moonlighting now as a criminal in America.
Immigrant gangsters are responsible for serious and often violent crimes in Virginia. Nine of those arrested by ICE in the last three years were murderers, and six were sex offenders. Their most common crimes were assault and robbery/larceny.
Gangsters tend to work by day in construction, landscaping, farming, and day labor, and at night are involved in organized crime including drug dealing, prostitution rings, theft, and extortion.
62% of alien gangsters arrested in Virginia by ICE were from El Salvador, 12% were from Mexico, and 10% from Honduras.
Right on cue, here's an example of a day laborer (Julio Cesar Jacobo-Curiel) invited into a home who repaid a kindness with murder: Woman was strangled in mobile home; roommate sought.
In addition, here's another illegal alien gangbanger poster boy just arrested: 'Most Wanted' Fugitive Captured in L.A..
One of the top ten fugitives wanted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was captured Wednesday in Los Angeles, according to immigration officials.
David Rivera, a suspected MS-13 gang member, is wanted for questioning by the Los Angeles Police Department in connection with several homicides.
John McCain, Multiculturalist [1/24/08]
Here is an important analysis of the character of the man: John McCain believes in an ideology that fails to take the most basic aspects of human nature into account -- not to mention destroy the American sovereignty that thousands died to protect. But he wants to be President.
But his support for de facto open borders is merely one manifestation of a larger problem — John McCain is a multiculturalist.
I don’t mean he eats tacos at the Cinco de Mayo parade (nothing wrong with that!) — I mean he’s an ideological multiculturalist. Francis Fukuyama has described (PDF) the ideology of multiculturalism this way: “not just as tolerance of cultural diversity in de facto multicultural societies but as the demand for legal recognition of the rights of ethnic, racial, religious, or cultural groups.” At almost every turn over his entire public career, John McCain has supported the pluribus over the unum.
Take bilingual education. McCain has been an enthusiastic proponent of this divisive and discredited program for years. He was honorary co-host of the 1995 convention of the National Association for Bilingual Education; The New Republic reported that he wrote to convention participants that “[t]o reject a native language as a tool for teaching as well as enriching our national heritage makes learning all the more difficult and makes us a poorer nation.”
Three Little Pigs 'too offensive' [1/24/08]
For the latest episode of Britain's cultural suicide, check out this item of political correctness on steroids. A children's book was denied a government award for excellence because the cartoon piggies might offend Muslims. You can't make this stuff up.

Mexican politicians say migrants returning because of AZ law [1/23/08]
Yep, the Mexicans are still leaving Arizona, and politicans are squawking up a storm about their annoying countrymen returning home. Funny how mass immigration looks when you are on the receiving end.
"We're going to demand resources," said Irma Villalobos, a state legislator who heads the commission of border affairs in Sonora.
Here's more wailing from the state directly south of Arizona: Sonoran officials slam sanctions law in Tucson visit.
Nogales legislator Leticia Amparano, who met with Arizona lawmakers to learn more about the new law and its enforcement, said Mexican lawmakers have collected anecdotes about crowded classrooms and more people roaming the streets of downtown Nogales, Mexico, in search of assistance.
At a news conference, the legislators said Sonora - Arizona's southern neighbor, made up of mostly small towns - cannot handle the demand for housing, jobs and schools it will face as illegal Mexican workers here return to their hometowns without jobs or money.
The Rainbow Coalition Evaporates [1/23/08]
Nice article, albeit overdue: Los Angeles has been suffering Mexican-on-black violence for some time, where hispanic gangs have conspired to drive out black citizens.
Moreover, there's a lot of evidence that the whole rainbow idea was just a marketing strategy from ethnic shake-down artists like Jesse Jackson. Average black workers have always done done better economically in periods of low immigration.
Black unease about immigration goes back a long way. In the 1870s, former slave Frederick Douglass warned that immigrants were displacing free blacks in the labor market. Twenty-five years later, Booker T. Washington exhorted America’s industrialists to “cast down your bucket” not among new immigrants but “among the eight million Negros . . . who have without strikes and labor wars tilled your fields, cleared your forests, builded your railroads and cities.” Blacks supported federal legislation in 1882 that restricted Chinese immigration to the United States. They favored the immigration reform acts of the 1920s, which limited European immigration, and also urged restrictions on Mexican workers: “If the million Mexicans who have entered the country have not displaced Negro workers, whom have they displaced?” asked black journalist George Schuyler in 1928.

How Nunez rose to power so fast [1/22/08]
Was the Speaker of the California Assembly Fabian Nunez a jackpot baby?
Life began modestly for Núñez, who was born Dec. 26, 1966, at a San Diego hospital to Pablo and Soledad Núñez. The couple, who lived in Tijuana, wanted to have at least one child born on the other side of the border, and their opportunity came thanks to a program that allowed impoverished Mexicans to work in the United States.

Folk Medicines Contain Lead [1/22/08]
Mothers from Mexico may be unwittingly be condemning their children to failure in school by rotting their brains with lead poisoning.
Maria didn't mean to poison her children. Quite the opposite. Worried about her daughters' lack of appetite, the young Houston mother was merely following her grandmother's advice when she gave the two girls and a niece a dose of "greta" — a Mexican folk medicine used to treat children's stomach ailments.
This article is about folk medicine, and therefore doesn't mention the additional problem with lead-laced Mexican candy which presumably contains a lower percentage of lead, but may be eaten frequently. For information about that, see Will California Get Mexican Lead Out?.
What Maria, who asked that her last name not be used, did not know then, but now will never forget, is that the bright orange powder is nearly 90 percent lead. [...]
In Harris County, which includes Houston, traditional medicines are blamed for nearly one-fifth of all cases in which children were found to have high levels of lead. In Arizona, home remedies account for one-fourth of childhood lead poisoning cases.
So there are chemical burdens added to Mexican culture's traditional disdain for scholarly achievement; e.g. only 13% of Mexican adults receive a high school diploma versus 87% of American adults. And even fourth-generation Mexicans living in America have not assimilated to US educational values: only 9.6 percent attain a post-high-school degree compared with 45 percent of Americans as a whole.

U.S. faces 'grave threat' in Mexico's drug fight [1/21/08]
The Mexico border is a war zone and getting worse.
Mexican military efforts to crush heavily armed drug-smuggling operations in five cities along the U.S.-Mexico border pose a "grave threat" to U.S. authorities and a half-million Americans in the area, according to former U.S. Border Patrol and Immigration and Naturalization Service officials.
"What we face is more of a challenge than law enforcement can be expected to cope with," said Kent Lundgren, chairman of the 800-member National Association of Former Border Patrol Officers (NAFBPO). "The best solution is for the U.S. military to assume armed positions along the border ... and use whatever force is necessary to control the border zone."
Thousands attend parade, festival honoring King [1/21/08]
Funny how diversophiles can't resist trying to hijack holidays that already have their own unique meanings into celebrations of diversity. Martin Luther King Day gets rewritten more than most: see MLK Day — Diversity Hectoring Opportunity? from last year.
MLK Day was meant to honor King's work to bring long-delayed rights of citizenship to black Americans through peaceful protest. But that's not enough for multi-cultists who use the occasion to jabber propaganda that endless immigration from everywhere is beneficial. The MSM is happy to aid and abet the agenda with cheerful diversity treacle.
In San Diego, the Multicultural Festival just happened to coincide with MLK Day. How convenient.
Samuel, 11, was one of the KIPP Adelante Preparatory Academy students whose global village depicting the Central American country was the centerpiece of Saturday's San Diego Multicultural Festival.
And so on and so forth, in the same vein. This multiculti separatist indoctrination is apparently acceptable as news in San Diego's main newspaper.
The festival was sponsored by the Centre City Development Corporation and coincided with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade. The events drew thousands of spectators to downtown where diversity was the theme; and music, dance and food were the day's highlights.
But back to Samuel. He and his classmates had been studying Panama since October, when the school was invited to participate in the festival.
The idea was to immerse the students in a different culture, and then to have them express their newfound cultural awareness to festival visitors.
Samuel did it with confidence – and a beaming smile.
That's exactly what event organizers wanted.
“When people understand the cultures of others it brings them together. And that makes for a stronger, cohesive community,” said Derek Danzinger, vice-president of communication for the Centre City Development Corp.
San Diego takes pride in its diversity and how that diversity defines the character of the community, he said.
Of course, even liberal sociologist Robert Putnam had to admit that diversity decreases community cohesion. But the failed ideology underlying open borders continues to be enthusiastically spewed by the press.
In Birmingham, MLK Day organizers engaged the Mexican apologist Janet Murguia of La Raza as the keynote speaker. Opening the borders to millions more cheap-labor Mexicans is exactly what black citizens struggling at the low end of the economic scale do not need. And convicted felon Elvira Arellano is not Rosa Parks.
What's forgotten by diversity extremists is Dr. King's message of cultural inclusion among all Americans regardless of race.
A Cutting Tradition [1/20/08]
In many towns in America, there are free spay-your-pet days held in community centers. In the majority Islam country of Indonesia, the local Muslims similarly organize free FGM-your-daughter events at the schools. Shown below, the servants of Allah are lined up to cruelly abuse children.
Ever the PC shill for any brutal culture on the planet, the New York Times makes this barbarity sound like no problem at all. Women's rights and safety are often the first to be sacrificed for multicultural correctness.
When a girl is taken -- usually by her mother -- to a free circumcision event held each spring in Bandung, Indonesia, she is handed over to a small group of women who, swiftly and yet with apparent affection, cut off a small piece of her genitals. Sponsored by the Assalaam Foundation, an Islamic educational and social-services organization, circumcisions take place in a prayer center or an emptied-out elementary-school classroom where desks are pushed together and covered with sheets and a pillow to serve as makeshift beds. The procedure takes several minutes. There is little blood involved. Afterward, the girl's genital area is swabbed with the antiseptic Betadine. She is then helped back into her underwear and returned to a waiting area, where she’s given a small, celebratory gift -- some fruit or a donated piece of clothing -- and offered a cup of milk for refreshment. She has now joined a quiet majority in Indonesia, where, according to a 2003 study by the Population Council, an international research group, 96 percent of families surveyed reported that their daughters had undergone some form of circumcision by the time they reached 14.
That last statistic puts the lie to the idea bruited about that FGM is "not Islam." In practice, Islam pushes FGM as a way to control females, as is made clear in the above article when a leader of the chop-up day remarked "it will balance her psychology."
In addition, Indonesia is supposed to be the home of "moderate" Islam, far from those extreme Arabs in the Middle East.
Elsewhere, other generous Muslims are willing to share their compassionate culture with us benighted westerners: 'We want to offer sharia law to Britain'.
What's New In Diversity [1/20/08]
Since hanging up his column spurs, John Leo has been running a website that keeps an eye on college PC insanity at Minding the Campus.
The collegiate diversity crowd still lives in its own little bubble of perfect multiculturalism, where utopia flows like Kool-Aid.
Yale's burgeoning diversity program has another announcement: it wants to "incorporate the role of ethnic counselor into that of freshman counselor, who will become responsible for providing enhanced community support for cultural affairs on campus," according to the Yale Daily News.
As Joe Guzzardi points out in Diversity Consulting Firms - Laughing All The Way To The Bank, diversity is a racket that is making its purveyors quite wealthy. Also, the Washington Post writes that Most Diversity Training Ineffective, Study Finds.
What does that mean? Well, according to the News, which neglected to supply an English-language version of the plan, "students would become increasingly aware of extant cultural resources on campus, along with gaining knowledge of new support to be rolled out under the restructure."
Okay, that clears it all up. There is, however, dissent. "This is unbelievable. It reads like an article from the Onion," said the first reader comment on the News site yesterday. "Do these people realize they are becoming laughing stocks?" Apparently not. The feeling at Yale seems to be that most students lack sufficient diversity awareness and are in some danger of going mainstream instead of remaining in their identity cubbyholes.
Yale currently has 90 residential counselors in its 12 residential colleges and only 13 ethnic counselors, hardly enough by today's diversity standards. The Daily News says the ethnic counselors have a "sometimes nebulous role within the college community," but nebulousness seems destined to fade. The goal, as one ethnicity counselor told the News, is to change the culture at Yale so students aren't afraid to talk about diversity and race and "really understand the way in which ethnicity plays a role in their life within the residential colleges." To that end, the "intercultural educators" take a missionary position, planning speeches and intercultural events, and preaching the diversity gospel.
Fleeing to Mexico Thwarts Death Penalty [1/20/08]
No one should be surprised when murderers -- like Marine killer Cesar Laurean -- head for the border. If they can make it into Mexico, the most brutal criminals are sure of not facing execution.
Because gentle Mexico, ever the noble defender of human rights, will not extradite anyone unless the prosecuter promises not to seek the death penalty.
A methamphetamine dealer who gunned down a deputy during a traffic stop in Southern California. A man in Arizona who killed his ex-girlfriend's parents and brother and snatched his children. A man who suffocated his baby daughter and left her body in a toolbag on an expressway overpass near Chicago.
One factor unmentioned in this article is the lack of a strong advocate for American victims: the useless occupant of the White House has consistently acted on the side of Mexicans. (See Bush Crushes Justice for Victim Families.) President Bush stuck his nose in the justice system by requesting that Texas courts overturn the conviction of a Mexican national, thereby siding with a rapist-murderer Jose Medellin.
Ordinarily, these would be death penalty cases. But these men fled to Mexico, thereby escaping the possibility of execution.
The reason: Mexico refuses to send anyone back to the United States unless the U.S. gives assurances it won't seek the death penalty — a 30-year-old policy that rankles some American prosecutors and enrages victims' families.
"We find it extremely disturbing that the Mexican government would dictate to us, in Arizona, how we would enforce our laws at the same time they are complaining about our immigration laws," said Barnett Lotstein, special assistant to the prosecutor in Maricopa County, Ariz., which includes Phoenix.
"Even in the most egregious cases, the Mexican authorities say, 'No way,' and that's not justice. That's an interference of Mexican authorities in our judicial process in Arizona."
It may be about to happen again: A Marine accused of murdering a pregnant comrade in North Carolina and burning her remains in his backyard is believed to have fled to Mexico. Prosecutors said they have not decided whether to seek the death penalty. But if the Marine is captured in Mexico, capital punishment will be off the table.
See? With Bush in the White House, the Mexicans always win.

Culture Fundamentally Alters the Brain [1/19/08]
We already know that foreign cultures really are different from our own. Now research has revealed that those differences actually affect brain function.
It's no secret culture influences your food preferences and taste in music. But now scientists say it impacts the hard-wiring of your brain.
New research shows that people from different cultures use their brains differently to solve basic perceptual tasks.
Neuroscientists Trey Hedden and John Gabrieli of MIT's McGovern Institute for Brain Research asked Americans and East Asians to solve basic shape puzzles while in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner. They found that both groups could successfully complete the tasks, but American brains had to work harder at relative judgments, while East Asian brains found absolute judgments more challenging.
Previous psychology research has shown that American culture focuses on the individual and values independence, while East Asian culture is more community-focused and emphasizes seeing people and objects in context. This study provides the first neurological evidence that these cultural differences extend to brain activity patterns.
For more details (including diagrams of brain scans), see Culture influences brain function, brain imaging shows
People from different cultures use their brains differently to solve the same visual perceptual tasks, MIT researchers and colleagues report in the first brain imaging study of its kind.
Psychological research has established that American culture, which values the individual, emphasizes the independence of objects from their contexts, while East Asian societies emphasize the collective and the contextual interdependence of objects. Behavioral studies have shown that these cultural differences can influence memory and even perception. But are they reflected in brain activity patterns?
To find out, a team led by John Gabrieli, a professor at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT, asked 10 East Asians recently arrived in the United States and 10 Americans to make quick perceptual judgments while in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner--a technology that maps blood flow changes in the brain that correspond to mental operations.
Refugee problems stem from lack of communication [1/19/08]
Brian Mosely has written somewaht critically of the situation with Somali refugees in Shelbyville, Tennessee, in a series of several articles in the local paper.
No advocacy group has given these folks a helping hand since they've been here. When I first contacted Catholic Charities, the organization that is resettling Somalis and other groups throughout the nation, they had "no idea" that the refugees were living in Shelbyville in such large numbers.
The assertion that there has been little help in settling the refugees is true as far as it goes. But the idea that "communication" would help has no basis in observable experience. Somalis living in communities where they have lots of well-funded services have shown no interest in anything resembling assimilation to American culture.
Instead, their current policy apparently just brings the hapless refugees into the country, gives them extremely limited orientation on how to properly function in western society, and then sets them loose to fend for themselves.
This is a very bad idea. To simply relocate members of a totally alien culture into a community without the needed support, services or training to help them adjust to 21st Century America is immoral and wrong.
No one called the city, county or the school system about the arrival of the Somalis. We were just expected to cope with the challenge when they showed up on our doorstep.
And with the Somali culture being so different in respects to mannerisms and traditions, this failure to communicate caused an obvious clash of civilizations that has resulted in extremely ugly feelings from many people who live here.
In addition, in all the Shelbyville commentary about Somalis, there is no mention of their near-universal practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) on little girls.
Fewer people would mean fewer worries [1/18/08]
Here is a column from Australia that expresses some basic common sense you almost never read in the MSM. The world population doubled from 1960 to 2000 from three to six billion, and the seven billion mark is not that far off. The situation is unprecedented in human history, but the idea that overpopulation could affect our affairs is simply off the table for discussion.
THERE'S something missing in all the discussion about the three most pressing environmental problems of the times: climate change, the lack of further arable land for agriculture, and water shortages. To date, almost all the comment has been about the need for more technology and almost nothing has been said about stabilising human population. And yet stabilising the population at present or even slightly lower levels might be an easier and more durable solution than developing and applying increasing levels of technology.
Environmentalists used to talk about overpopulation, back when white Americans were having a lot of children. Now that the demographics have changed, the discussion is far more restricted.
We are averse to thinking this way because historically population growth has been an easy means of economic growth. We also like to believe that our technology has allowed us to break free from the resource constraints that limit the populations of every other species. Indeed, it's almost as if we believe that in limiting our population we would be showing a loss of nerve as a species. But while a steadily growing population may have once contributed to an improving quality of life for all of humanity, it is now slowing the shift to a better quality of life for many and leading to a declining quality of life for others. And perhaps, even more alarmingly, population growth and its handmaiden, consumption, may now be driving the need for new technology at a faster pace than it can be reliably developed and applied.
New Terror Threat [1/18/08]
As I've noted before (Travel Agents of Destruction), the travel industry does a great deal of mischief against the national security of this nation. They are against anything that impedes the process of getting around (obtaining passports, visas and such), particularly between countries: open borders (such as exist now in the European Union) would be their ideal worldwide.
Furthermore, the problem of Visa Waivers is not new: conservative writers like Joel Mowbray pointed out the danger not long after 9/11. But apparently the head of the Department of Homeland Security just noticed the problem.
"One of the things we've become concerned about lately is the possibility of Europe becoming a platform for a threat against the United States," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff warned.
Lately? Chertoff just noticed visa waivers from Islamified Europe might make it easier for terrorists? Why are the twits at DHS always the last to get a clue?
Most Europeans can come to the U.S. without visas — or background checks — under the waiver program.
"That means the first time we encounter them is when they arrive in the United States," Chertoff said, "and that creates a very small window of opportunity to check them out."
Unlike other foreign visitors, visa-waiver travelers are not required to disclose their place of birth, any previous citizenship or their visa history. These are key counter-terror indicators often denied U.S. security officials as they process European travelers.
High-Tech Border Patrol: 5 New Tricks to Find Smuggler Tunnels
There are some tech approaches to enforcing the border that are pure vapor ware, like "virtual fences" and other daydreams emanating from DHS.
But using technology to find those dangerous tunnels coming this way from Mexico is smart and necessary -- as long as the tunnels are immediately destroyed.
See also Dave Vanderbilt's page of tunnel info and photos from Canada.
How It's Done: The way that vibrations just under the surface change as they pass through rock and dirt provides details about what's below, and can show the presence of a tunnel.
Who's Working on It: Researchers from the U.S. Army and Kansas Geological Survey in 2006 analyzed tunnel detection methods using seismic sensors in Kansas and along the U.S.-Mexico border in California.
What the Limits Are: To create real-time detectors, more powerful imaging software must be developed to filter out the waves' reactions to natural and man-made noises, such as wind and highway traffic.
Adman to Pitch Immigrants' Story [1/17/08]
Big money wants borders to remain open and an amnesty to assure foreigners that America is still doing business as usual. Naturally, if the tens of millions of illegals do get on the "pathway to citizenship," they will immediately become less desirable to employers who want exploitable workers and will seek to hire the next batch of illegals.
The nation's heated debate over immigration is headed to television advertising, in the form of a business-funded campaign that will tout the benefits of legalizing illegal workers and try to counter hardening rhetoric on immigration.
The campaign is spearheaded by Lionel Sosa, a media strategist who is credited with delivering nearly half of the Hispanic vote to President Bush in the previous presidential race.
What the above Wall Sreet Journal article does not mention is the contribution of the meddling Mexican government, according to Lou Dobbs Tonight, Jan 17.
Yesterday, Mr. Sosa gathered here representatives from the construction, lodging, agricultural and banking sectors, as well as from churches, grass-roots groups and both political parties, to review the ads and finalize their strategy.
Mr. Sosa says he has raised $25 million for the campaign from one group he didn't identify. His independent nonprofit organization -- Mexicans and Americans Thinking Together, or Matt.org -- plans to match that with other contributions from business interests that benefit from immigrant labor, he says. His long-term goal is to invest $100 million in a national ad campaign, though he acknowledges that is a tall order in a presidential election year.
A U.S. advertising executive says he is close to a deal with the Mexican government to help fund $100 million ad campaign that would be pushing, you guessed it, amnesty for illegal aliens. Casey Wian has our report.
You an also watch this part of Lou Dobbs tonight as a film clip on American Patrol.
CASEY WIAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Lobbying groups for the U.S. construction, agriculture and other industries with large illegal alien work forces are funding a series of pro-amnesty TV ads scheduled to air after this year's presidential conventions. And Mexican funding for the ad campaign is quote, "a very, very strong possibility", says the executive director of matt.org, Mexicans and Americans thinking together. It is hoping to raise $100 million for the ad campaign.
LIONEL SOSA, EXEC. DIRECTOR, MATT.ORG: This campaign is as important as a presidential campaign. You know candidates for president spent millions upon millions of dollars so that they can get their message across. If we are to get the voice of reason across, we need to do it in the same way. Let's make them legal. That way we won't have to be against anyone. We will know who they are. We don't have to be afraid. And we will all win.
Somali center helps refugees adjust to life in the United States
The country is slipping into a recession, but the refugee business is booming, thanks to the unwilling contributions of taxpayers. Tens of thousands of people from cultures vastly different from our own are imported annually, both to make liberal do-gooders feel virtuous and to maintain the employment of refugee "resettlement" workers.
Among the least appropriate cultures for assimilation to the first world are Somalis, a tribal people whose social norms include polygamy, wife beating and female genital mutilation.
Ahmed Elmi came to the United States from Somalia in 1983, several years before a civil war engulfed his homeland and led to the worldwide displacement of some 1.5 million Somalis, many of whom came to Maryland as refugees.
Below are some Maryland Somalis apparently celebrating diversity with their new infidel acquaintance.
"Somalis came in the beginning for high education," said Elmi, who has earned degrees from George Mason and George Washington universities. "But the civil war brought a lot of people who couldn’t even read or write." [...]
"Some people, when they come here, they don’t know how to use a refrigerator or turn on the heat," said Khalif Hired, the group's vice chairman, who came to the United States from Somalia in 1979 to attend Ball State University in Muncie, Ind.
Huckabee Wants Some Immigration Halted [1/15/08]
Kudos to Huck for saying that continuing to welcome immigrants from terror-supporting nations is highly dangerous political correctness.
Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee called Tuesday for suspending immigration from countries that sponsor or harbor terrorists.
On campaign trail in South Carolina's Jan. 19 primary, Huckabee sharpened his rhetoric on immigration and embraced a tougher measure than any of his rivals have so far.
"There's a couple of things we're going to do differently," Huckabee told supporters shortly after arriving in the state from Michigan. "I say we ought to put a hiatus on people who come in here ... if they come from countries that sponsor and harbor terrorists."
"Let's say, until you get your act in order, and we get our act in order, we're not going to just let you keep coming and threaten the future and safety of America," he said.
Arrest in Chandler Rapist case may fuel debate [1/15/08]
The evil character who has literally been terrorizing the community of Chandler, Arizona, is an illegal alien. He preyed upon children, raping at least five girls aged 12 to 14.
The article linked above doesn't use the term "backlash" (such as, "Hispanic residents fear a backlash because of the crimes"), but that's the real topic in a word.
As Chandler residents regroup following a man's arrest in the rapes that terrorized the city for 18 months, immigration advocates are bracing for the angry tide over illegal immigration to wash over the Valley again.
As I've written before (e.g. Backlash Fears in Virginia Beach), every arrest of a non-American criminal for a horrendous crime causes an immediate flurry of media interest in the suffering of innocent immigrants at the hands of us terrible citizens. But the dreaded "backlash" in the form of physical attacks never happens because it is a figment in the mind of the MSM.
From talk radio to lunch-time talk, Santana Batiz Aceves' status as a Mexican national who was deported twice before his weekend arrest in the "Chandler Rapist" case will be cited by both those who advocate a hard-line stance on immigration and those who are sympathetic to the plight of undocumented immigrants.
Experts agree that as details of the reported series of attacks on young girls emerge, they will harden the public's attitude toward illegal immigrants - especially because assaults against children are among the worst types of crimes, they say.
But if American citizens notice the genuinely high incidence of crime among illegal aliens -- particularly sexual assaults and drunk driving -- what's wrong with that? Public policy should be based on facts, not kumbaya illusions of world peace through erasing borders.
Furthermore, 12 serial sex offenders cross the U.S. border illegally every day, according to a 2006 Department of Homeland Security report. Illegal immigration is not a victimless crime.
The good news -- Chandler Rapist Could Get 250 Years in Prison.
"Should we be proud of Bobby Jindal?" [1/14/08]
Thanks to the wonders of C-SPAN, I watched the inauguration of Bobby Jindal as the Governor of Louisiana this morning. He is the son of immigrants from India, as well as a Republican conservative. His politics and level of assimilation don't sit too well with the homies in Mother India who believe they have a claim on him.
As the columnist from the influential Times of India made clear, he essentially objects to assimilation to American values, particularly to the degree achieved by Bobby Jindal.
There are, broadly speaking, two kinds of Indian migrants in America: though no sociologist, i'll call them the atavists and the assimilationists. The atavists hold on to their original identities as much as possible, especially outside the workplace; in speech, dress, food habits, cultural preferences, they are still much more Indian than American. The assimilationists, on the other hand, seek assiduously to merge into the American mainstream; they acquire a new accent along with their visa, and adopt the ways, clothes, diet and recreational preferences of the Americans they see around them. [...]
The upshot is that a tiny bit of assimilation may be okay, but not too much and certainly becoming a conservative Republican is beyond the pale, according to the editorialist.
Born to relatively affluent professionals in Louisiana, he rejected his Indian name (Piyush) as a very young child, insisting that he be called Bobby, after a (white) character on the popular TV show 'The Brady Bunch'. His desire to fit in to the majority-white society he saw around him soon manifested itself in another act of rejection: Bobby spurned the Hindusim into which he was born and, as a teenager, converted to Roman Catholicism, the faith of most white Louisianans.
I'm just fascinated by the use of the word "atavist" regarding immigration, and will definitely use it, e.g. "Ruben Navarrette is a closet atavist."

Sen. McCain and illegal immigration [1/14/08]
In case anyone needs a Cliff Notes reminder of everything that's wrong with John McCain, here is a fine little list from the Washington Times.
Supporting mass amnesty. The May 29, 2003, Tucson Citizen quoted Mr. McCain as stating that "Amnesty has to be an important part of" any immigration solution. He was part of the bipartisan coalition that tried to pass amnesty legislation in 2006 and 2007. In 2006 he voted in favor of S. 2611, legislation that would reward between 10 and 11 million illegals with amnesty if they apply for legal status and pay a $2,000 fine.
The National Review has a list also, not entirely about immigration.
Supporting in-state tuition for illegal aliens. Mr. McCain was a cosponsor of S. 774, the Dream Act, providing in-state tuition for illegal aliens. The legislation would have enabled illegal aliens who entered the United States before age 16 to obtain a green card and then use their newly acquired status to obtain green cards for the millions of parents who illegally brought their children with them into the United States. Mr. McCain missed a Senate vote on the issue in October. He said that he would have opposed it on the Senate floor had he been there to vote.
Voted to kill border fence. In 2006, Mr. McCain voted for an amendment to S. 2611 offered by Sen. Arlen Specter to require consultation with the Mexican government concerning the construction of fencing along the U.S.-Mexican border. According to Numbers USA, an organization that lobbies against illegal immigration, this amendment would have effectively guaranteed that the border fence was never built.
Voted against permanently barring gang members and terrorists from the United States. Last year, Mr. McCain voted against an amendment (Senate Amendment 1184) introduced by Sen. John Cornyn, Texas Republican, that would have permanently barred gang members, terrorists, sex offenders, alien absconders, aliens convicted of domestic violence and aliens convicted of at least three DUIs from the United States. The Cornyn Amendment was rejected on a 51-46 vote.
Voted in favor of Social Security benefits to illegal aliens who commit identity fraud. In 2006. Mr. McCain joined with Mr. Kennedy in working to defeat an amendment by Sen. John Ensign, Nevada Republican, that would have barred Social Security credits for work being done prior to their receiving amnesty — in other words, while working under a false Social Security number. The Ensign Amendment, (Senate Amendment 3985) was defeated on a 50-49 vote.
Enforcement fueling immigrant exodus [1/14/08]
Here's more proof that the attrition approach to enforcement works, this time from Oklahoma. Take away the enticements (jobs, welfare, free medical care, tuition breaks for the kiddies, food stamps, etc.) and deport some to show seriousness, and attrition will take over.
The Tulsa County sheriff's office is the only law enforcement agency in the state to have officers trained to enforce federal immigration laws. It has detained and helped to deport more than 1,000 illegal immigrants since July.
That's right -- when illegal aliens leave, crime decreases. It's good to hear a police officer discuss that aspect.
The Greater Tulsa Hispanic Chamber of Commerce estimates that between 15,000 and 25,000 Hispanic immigrants have left the city in the last few months. Hispanic religious leaders there say they have seen their congregations reduced roughly by half. [...]
Arrests made by Tulsa County Sheriff's deputies have resulted in a decline in the jail population of about seven percent, or 100 inmates. Glanz says federal immigration law gives him an additional tool to get undesirables off the street.
"We are identifying and removing what we call frequent flyers, people we consider major criminals,” Glanz said, adding that he has been surprised by hesitation from other law enforcement agencies.
"I don't think they understand the implications on the community of having a strong underbelly of illegal aliens. They end up working a lot of domestic violence cases, a lot of drug cases and shootings they wouldn't have to if they would just enforce immigration laws," [Sheriff Stanley] Glanz said. "When you have a bunch of illegals in a community, it spawns other types of criminal activity; it helps create an environment where that criminality can exist."
State and national nursing shortages could be addressed by hiring from Mexico [1/14/08]
The people running healthcare corporations would love to lower their costs (though not ours) by hiring foreign nurses on the cheap. Mexico is so handy, plus many of their patients in southern California are Mexican anyway. ("More than 80 percent of patients at El Centro Regional are Spanish-speaking, for example, and most are originally from Mexico.")
EL CENTRO – For years, the Imperial Valley's largest hospital has grappled not only with the national nursing shortage but with a lack of Spanish-speaking nurses able to communicate easily with the Latino patients who fill most of the beds.
In addition, check out the slide show with audio about Mexican nurses included with the article. One Mexican working in the US complains that there is racism in Americans' objections to importing foreign medical personel from Mexico. But Mexico has the lowest pass rate of nationalities currently applying to work here. That's not racism but a realistic recognition on the part of Americans that Mexican culture lacks an interest in scholarship.
The solution may be right next door, in Mexico.
“For the valley, nothing makes more sense,” said Tomás Virgen, assistant chief nursing officer at the 163-bed El Centro Regional Medical Center. After years of searching as far as the Philippines for nurses, El Centro Regional has begun recruiting in the Baja California capital of Mexicali, a dozen miles south.
Potentially, an unlimited number of Mexican nurses could work in the United States under a special provision of the North American Free Trade Agreement, but few are trying, and only a small portion of those have been successful.
"Their bedside manner, their caring for patients are some of the best I've ever seen," said Tony Minks, chief operating officer for Kaiser Permanente. "Where they need help is with the technology that we have."
Talk about damning with faint praise! Most Americans would prefer nurses with a strong training in medicine and science, rather than dubious touchy-feely skills in hand-holding.

Coughlin backed [1/13/08]
It's good to see that Pentagon analyst Stephen Coughlin has not been completely abandoned by the military for reasons of political correctness.
Some Pentagon and military leaders, along with lots of working-level officials, are quietly rallying to support ousted Joint Staff counterterrorism analyst Stephen Coughlin.
Coughlin merely compiled Muslims' own plans for a global caliphate and the result was deemed inflammatory by some.
Pentagon officials said a number of generals and admirals who share Mr. Coughlin's well-reasoned assessment of the Islamic law underpinnings of Islamist terror are voicing support for the lawyer and former military intelligence official.
Mr. Coughlin was fired as a Joint Staff contractor after his confrontation with Hasham Islam, a special assistant to Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England, was reported here last month.
Mr. Islam, a Muslim, referred to Mr. Coughlin as a "Christian zealot with a pen" during the meeting several weeks ago, a slur rejected by Mr. Coughlin's supporters.
Critics of Mr. Coughlin are spreading word — falsely — that he is being let go because he talked out of school to the press. One official suggested the action was due to budget cuts.
But defense and military officials supportive of Mr. Coughlin said the real reason is that critics, like Mr. Islam. want him sidelined because they oppose his hard-to-refute views on the relationship between Islamic law and Islamist jihad doctrine. Those views have triggered a harsh debate challenging the widespread and politically correct view of Islam as a religion of peace hijacked by extremists.
"Steve Coughlin is the most knowledgeable person in the U.S. government on Islamic law," said retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Thomas McInerney. "The secretary of defense should ensure that he stays at DOD."
Another booster is Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Samuel Helland, commanding general of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Corps, who said in November that Mr. Coughlin's briefing for Marines bound for Iraq "hit the mark in explaining how jihadists use the Koran to justify their actions."
You can read brief summary of the case so far at JihadWatch.org. In addition, Coughlin's 333-page paper may be downloaded in PDF at “To Our Great Detriment”
In comments made at the National Defense University on 1 December 2005, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Peter Pace explained to his audience the importance of “understand[ing] the nature of the enemy” if we hope to defeat jihadi extremists. Comparing our situation today, with that faced by an earlier generation who had to deal with the reality of the Nazi threat, General Pace suggested a simple solution to complying with his injunction: “read what our enemies have said. Remember Hitler…. He said in writing exactly what his plan was that we collectively ignored to our great detriment (emphasis added).” Just as we ignored Hitler’s articulation of his strategic doctrine in Mein Kampf, so too are we on the verge of suffering a similar fate today, if we fail to seriously assess the extremist threat based on jihadi strategic doctrine.
Catholics play vital role in helping migrants to U.S. [1/13/08]
Here's a little update on how the Catholic Church (which pays no taxes in America) works to promote lawbreaking border crossing. (Shown in the photo are Los Angeles Archbishop Roger Mahony and his amnesty pal Sen Ted Kennedy as they campaigned in Washington for the destruction of American sovereignty.)
The Catholic shelter described is not located in the United States, but there are many just like it located in America, taking advantage of Americans' generosity to destroy us.
NUEVO LAREDO, Mexico – At a Catholic-run shelter just across the border from Laredo, Texas, dozens of Latin American migrants say grace and tuck into a hearty meal of sausages, beans and rice, before trying to swim across the Rio Grande into the United States.
Vaticrats are spouting more Marxism than scripture these days, or at least the ones stationed near Mexico. They are happy to see their pews filled up, a point that even the above Reuters article made.
Weary migrants on their journey north often recharge their batteries at a network of similar shelters run by the Roman Catholic Church – a lifeline sanctioned by the Vatican, despite increased U.S. efforts to keep out illegal immigrants.
“Migration is a human right and migrants are some of the world's most vulnerable people. It is the church's obligation to help them,” said the Rev. Francisco Pellizzari, an Italian-Argentine missionary who runs the Nazareth migrant shelter in Nuevo Laredo. [...]
The Nuevo Laredo shelter has been granted a papal blessing in a Vatican certificate that hangs proudly on the wall.
However, European Catholic leaders have a different idea regarding immigration, as I wrote in America's Vaticrats:
Here in the United States, the Conference of Catholic Bishops has a leftist, open-borders agenda. But that’s at odds with their
counterparts in Europe, where many immigrants are unfriendly Sons of Allah.
Cardinal Biffi caused a controversy in 2000 when he recommended that Italy "protect its national identity" and give preference to Catholic immigrants over Muslim ones.
In other Catholic news, the church is promoting Mexican culture, via the sexual availability ceremony for girls that is so popular for Mexi-teens: Catholics Rethink Quinceanera Craze.
Imagine if the U.S. suggested immigration policies that safeguarded America's historical national identity
Only the churchies try to clean up the open-for-business aspect of declaring 15-year-old girls to be ready for sex and child-bearing...
Consider it an acknowledgment of the changing face of American Catholicism. Hispanics account for almost 40 percent of the nation's 65 million Catholics and 71 percent of new U.S. Catholics since 1960, studies show.
It's no surprise then that Mexicans are unable to assimilate to American values of education and responsibility. Most Mexican teens are tied down by having children instead of pursuing job skills in school. As a result (and a cultural disinterest in scholarship not appropriate for the first world) only 9.6 percent of fourth-generation Mexican Americans have a post-high-school degree, compared with 45.1 percent of all Americans.
In the Archdiocese of Denver, Hispanic ministry leaders view the quinceañera craze as not just a chance to strengthen faith and family but as a weapon against teen pregnancy. [...]
Although teen pregnancy rates have generally been in decline across ethnic lines over the past 15 years, 51 percent of Hispanic girls get pregnant before age 20, according to the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.
U.S. anti-drug aid proposal could heighten violence in Mexico [1/12/08]
All evidence points to a worsening level of violence in Mexico from the drug gang intramurals, particularly with the infusion of US taxpayer aid in the form of high-tech equipment for crime fighting. Presumably the message is that the situation will get worse before it gets better, but the assumption that Mexico can pull back from becoming a full-bore failed state is a biggie.
Mexico recorded its deadliest year yet of drug-related killings in 2007, and the violence is expected to increase if an initial $500 million U.S. aid package to Mexico is approved by Congress in 2008, U.S. and Mexican officials and analysts say.
The promise of big American money slated for Latin America arroused Mexico's southern neighbors who are now squawking for a cut: Central American Freeloaders Line Up, with Hands Outstretched.
Drug-related killings surpassed 2,500 in 2007, eclipsing 2006's figure of more than 2,100, according to the Austin-based Stratfor consulting firm.
The killings underscore the timing of the Merida Initiative, an anti-drug agreement forged by Presidents Bush and Felipe Calderón and representing a new strategy of "shared responsibility," U.S. and Mexican officials said in interviews. Much of the aid would be used for helicopters, technology and information sharing.
Illegal immigrant sentenced in crash that killed UMSL student [1/11/08]
Here's a crime sentencing update, about a drunk-driving illegal alien, Pedro Santos, who killed a college student, 21-year-old Nicole Allen.
CLAYTON, MO. -- An illegal immigrant from Mexico is sentenced to 10 years in prison for a drunk-driving accident that killed a 21-year-old college student and seriously injured two of her friends.
For background, see DUI Death in the Heartland.
The sentence for 27-year-old Pedro Santos was handed down Thursday in St. Louis County Circuit Court. He pleaded guilty in November to charges that included involuntary manslaughter.
The accident last year in Maryland Heights killed University of Missouri-St. Louis student Nicole Allen. Authorities say the Lincoln Town Car driven by Santos crashed into the back of a 1991 Acura at a red light. Allen was in the back seat of the Acura.
Kidnappings Cross the Border [1/11/08]
With an open border inviting millions of Mexicans, we unsurprisingly get Mexico's culture of crime, particularly kidnapping.
The abductions are occurring in the Phoenix area at the rate of practically one per day, and police suspect they have led to killings in which bound and bullet-riddled bodies have been found dumped in the desert.
Yes, it is Mexican gangsters kidnapping each other now in Arizona. But kidnapping for money is sure to follow, since it is a popular criminal money-making strategy in Mexico.
The kidnap victims are typically drug- or immigrant-smugglers, who are seen as inviting targets because they have a lot of money, they can raise large sums of cash on short notice, and they are unlikely to go to the police, for fear their own shady dealings will come to light.
"We have never had a victim that we have investigated that has been as clean as the new driven snow," said Sgt. Phil Roberts, who investigates the kidnappings. "There has always been some type of criminal element to it. Either they are criminals, drug dealers or human smugglers — or a close family member is."
In fact, 13-year-old Clay Moore was kidnapped at gunpoint for money in Florida last February (Mexico's Kidnap Culture Appears in Florida). Accused criminal Vicente Beltran-Moreno was arrested for the crime March 7 when he crossed the border from Mexico.
LAS VEGAS STOP: Clinton pitch hits home [1/11/08]
How these pols love to flipflop! It was only November when Hillary declared that illegal aliens in New York should not get drivers licenses, after suggesting during a debate that she supported the idea -- sort of.
Now she is hanging out with the raza in Nevada, campaigning for the illegal vote...
A man shouted through an opening in the wall that his wife was illegal.
"No woman is illegal," Clinton said, to cheers.
Schwarzenegger budget slashes education, releases prisoners [1/10/08]
Remember when doofus Governor Grey Davis was recalled from office for spending California into a hole of billions of dollars? (Check out the jokes of the time.) The graph below shows that the current occupant of the office is no better at all.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger proposed a $141 billion state budget Thursday that would cut nearly 10 percent of the funding for public education and grant early release to 22,000 prison inmates as part of a plan to erase a $14.5 billion revenue shortfall over the next 18 months.
One of Arnold's bright ideas is to close parks, including nine in the Bay Area. No mention of removing benefits from illegal aliens though.
The spending plan also would close nearly one in five state parks and make it much tougher to return thousands of parole violators to prison.
The cuts would result in an overall 3 percent reduction in spending from the $145.5 billion budget the Republican governor signed last summer.
Republican Primary Scorecard [1/10/08]
Is it not remarkable that John McCain is now seen as the Republican frontrunner and Mitt Romney is considered dead meat, when Gov Romney has three times the delegates committed compared with the Arizona amnesty guy?
Yep, the all-important delegate count today stands at Romney - 30 and McCain - 10.
Indians Hit the Road Amid the Occasional Elephant [1/10/08]
India has an expanding middle class, largely due to American companies outsourcing jobs to take advantage of the very cheap labor there. The upshot is that many Indians have more money to spend, and they are purchasing cars, with mixed results.
A few weeks ago, the traditional Indian joint family household of Vineet Sharma, a fertilizer industry consultant, achieved a long deferred dream. Having ferried themselves on scooters all these years, the Sharmas bought a brand-new, silver-grey hatchback known as the Tata Indica.
Whatever your opinion about global warming, it's bad news for the environment to have millions more vehicles spewing crud into the atmosphere. A major factor is the new affordability: Tata Reveals World's Cheapest Car.
Never mind that none of the six adult members of the household knew how to drive. No sooner had the car arrived than Mr. Sharma, 34, took it for a spin and knocked over a friend. His brother slammed into a motorcyclist, injuring no one but damaging the bumper and getting so scared that he no longer gets behind the wheel, except on Sundays when the roads are empty.
“We bought it first, and then we thought about driving,” Mr. Sharma confessed.
For millions of people in the developing world, Tata Motor's new $2,500 four-door subcompact — the world's cheapest car — may yield a transportation revolution with as great an impact as Henry Ford's Model T, which rolled off an assembly line one century ago.
What I want to know is how many Indians will purchase a car before installing indoor plumbling, which is in short supply (No toilet, no seat, says minister, BBC 8/3/05).
The potential impact of Tata's Nano has given environmentalists nightmares, with visions of the tiny cars clogging India's already-choked roads and collectively spewing millions of tons of carbon dioxide into the air.
Mr Singh told the BBC that more than 65% of India's rural population defecated in the open, along roadsides, railway tracks and fields, generating huge amounts of excrement every day.
"This finds its way into the water sources," Mr Singh said.
About 70% of India's billion-plus population live in its more than 550,000 rural villages.
U.S. to deport relatives of Chinese-born engineer in export case [1/9/08]
Funny how the MSM has such a hard time using the word "spy" or "espionage" when there are immigrants involved -- neither of those words appear in this Associated Press news story. Instead we read about an "export case" and other vagueries. The media does not want to alarm us with the idea that enemies are here from hostile regimes who are working to undermine this nation.
SANTA ANA, Calif.—Federal immigration officials said Wednesday that they have arrested the sister-in-law and nephew of a Chinese-born engineer convicted of conspiring to export U.S. defense technology to China and intend to deport them to China.
I described the Chi Mak spy case in more direct language in my article, Mentioning The Unmentionable About The Chinese "Model Minority"...
Fuk Li, 50, and her son, Billy Mak, 27, both pleaded guilty to federal offenses last year when they were arrested during an investigation into their relative, engineer Chi Mak.
Because of their guilty pleas, they are eligible for deportation and will remain in custody until a hearing before a federal immigration judge, according to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Both came to the United States in 2001 from China.
With the power of Red China on the rise, questions about national allegiance are sure to increase. And rightly so. Lou Dobbs reported in March that the Chi Mak spy case had revealed that there are 3000 Chinese front companies here to steal American military and industrial secrets. Chi Mak was a naturalized U.S. citizen who was accused of spying for the PRC as part of his job as an engineer. "Prosecutors say the 66-year-old Mak was acting out of loyalty to his Chinese homeland and had plans to retire there," the show reported. He was later convicted, and several family members pleaded guilty to espionage charges.

A nation's growing thirst threatens a Great Lakes water war [1/9/08]
Some recent winter storms in California have improved this state's water prospects for the next season, but long term trends point toward persistant drought in the west.
Washington wants its Ponzi economy to continue; i.e. GDP increases via population growth, even as individual incomes fall.
With the 400 millionth American now approaching in a couple decades, America's growing population will need a larger water supply, and the Great Lakes are being eyed as a solution...
As drought-plagued states cast a jealous eye toward Michigan's abundant supply of freshwater, local lawmakers are scrambling -- unsuccessfully so far -- to fend off efforts to siphon from the Great Lakes.
A regional effort to enact legislation giving the eight Great Lakes states more control over water diversion is languishing in several states, with only two -- Minnesota and Illinois -- giving full approval so far. [...]
Several of the Great Lakes are already in the midst of extended stretches of low levels.
Lake Superior's September average level was 1.6 inches lower than the previous record for the month set in 1926. Huron and Michigan are losing water three times faster than previously believed, according to a study by a Canadian homeowners group.
Lakes Michigan and Huron declined by their usual 2 inches in December and now sit a whopping 26 and 13 inches, respectively, below the Jan. 1 level of last year. Experts think it's possible both lakes could beat their all-time record lows, set in March 1964, when the January monthly average level is figured at month's end.
Mexico Rebukes U.S. Candidates On Migrant Issues [1/8/08]
I wish one of the Republicans who says he will defend America's borders and immigration laws would tell meddling Mexicans to shut their taco holes about our internal affairs.
Mexico's foreign minister accused U.S. presidential candidates Monday of worsening an already "adverse climate" for Mexican migrants and vowed to redouble efforts to protect the rights of her country's citizens living and working in the United States.
You see, if illegal Mexicans were denied public services on the American taxpayer's tab, then they would have to pay more for their own upkeep and would have less cash available to send home to Mexico in the form of remittances -- over $24 billion in 2006, $13 billion from California.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of a conference for Mexican diplomats here, Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa Cantellano said, "Being effective in the defense and support of the migrants implies treating them the same way whether they are in Mexico or outside of the country." She did not specify what steps would be taken.
Mexican officials have said they are concerned that migrants are being treated unfairly in workplaces and, in some cases, being denied public services. The presidential campaign has frequently inflamed tensions on issues related to immigration.
New Year's papa facing deportation [1/8/08]
Sign of the times: Rhode Island's first birth of the New Year was a jackpot baby, a free meal ticket to America. When he turns 21, he can sponsor the rest of his lawbreaking family to enter this country legally. Disgusting.
PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The father of Rhode Island’s first baby of 2008 faces deportation after being arrested for violating immigration laws, while his roommate, also an illegal immigrant, was found dead of an apparent suicide hours after the arrest.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested Mynor Montufar at his apartment Friday after local newspapers and television stations showed him and Carmen Marrero as parents of the first baby born in the state after the new year rolled in, officials said.
ICE spokeswoman Paula Grenier said the timing of Montufar’s arrest was coincidental to the publicity surrounding his child. Another man also was arrested at the apartment, although Grenier would not identify him, citing agency policy.
Somali Community Upset Over Demeaning Poster [1/8/08]
There's not much assimilation going on in Lewiston Maine, where thousands of Somali refugees plunked themselves down a few years ago to avail themselves of the state's generous welfare benefits.
Ever since, it's been one complaint after another. Like the sliced ham episode, where a middle school boy deposited a pork product on the lunch table of some Somali students. That kid prank was a hate crime, according to the local guardians of diversity.
The latest affront to the infinite sensitivity of Muslims was a lost doggie poster attached to a pole near a Somali grocery. The horror -- a dog named Mohammed!
That's almost as alarming as a teddy bear named Mohammed, an international incident in Sudan that almost got an ignorant British schoolteacher relieved of her head.
Members of the Somali community in Lewiston say a poster put up in front of a local Somali owned store is an insult to their religion.
Actually, the fake phone number was part of the prank and most likely refers to the catchy pop tune Jenny Jenny (867-5309).
The poster depicts a vicious "lost" dog named Mohammed. That's the name of the Muslim prophet. It says that the dog is not good with children and can't be trusted.
Hussein Ahmed, the owner of the store, says the phone number on the poster is fake and that the only place it was put up was right near his business.
Denying Muslim Visas [1/7/08]
Why does Washington continue to welcome immigrants from terror-supporting states? It's a question I have asked more than once. Even the Government Accountability Office noticed that the US has admitted nearly 10,000 from terror-supporting countries since 9/11, a fact which caused the State Department's inspector general to warn in 2003 that the Diversity Visa Program posed a significant risk to national security.
To his credit, Rep Ron Paul has confronted this idiotic policy as part of his Presidential campaign.
In a controversial ad that's sending his libertarian fans into orbit, [Ron] Paul proposes tough new immigration policies, including denying visas to Muslim students from terrorist states.
See also my 2005 blog, Saudi Students Coming to a College near You.
Paul, a congressman from south Texas, also proposes ending "birthright citizenship," which allows the children of Middle Eastern and other illegal immigrants to stay in America. Such anchor babies now include the offspring of jailed or deported terrorists.
We don't agree with many of Paul's positions, but we're glad to see at least some of the millions he's raising online going to good use. We only hope his ad will spark a debate among GOP front-runners. With the exception of Mike Huckabee, none has picked up on this key national security issue.
Al-Qaida and other terror groups are targeting, grooming and radicalizing Muslim youth on U.S. college campuses. These teenagers are being groomed to be suicide bombers. (One in four college-age Muslims in America support suicide bombings, a Pew poll found.) [...]
Yet in a little-noticed 2005 deal struck between President Bush and Saudi King Abdullah, 21,000 young Saudi men will gain U.S. student visas by 2009. The program is supposed to heal the wound left by the 15 Saudi hijackers by promoting cultural exchange and understanding. Abdullah promises the new wave of Saudi students will be on their best behavior and allay our suspicions.
But that's what he said about Saudi terrorists repatriated from Gitmo who simply rejoined the jihad after he freed them. And how can Abdullah expect us to believe Saudi youth have been cured of their hatred for America when he never cleaned up, as promised, their hateful, anti-Western textbooks?
Illegal Aliens Receive $37 Million From County In November [1/7/08]
Lost Angeles Mexifornia leads the way in financial self-destruction, wasting the taxpayer's hard-earned funds on a trough of goodies for lawbreaking foreigners.
New statistics from the Department of Public Social Services reveal that illegal aliens and their families in Los Angeles County collected over $37 million in welfare and food stamp allocations in November 2007 – up $3 million dollars from September, announced Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.
Listen online to Doug McIntyre discuss this issue with Supervisor Mike Antonovich.
Twenty five percent of the all welfare and food stamps benefits is going directly to the children of illegal aliens. Illegals collected over $20 million in welfare assistance for November 2007 and over $16 million in monthly food stamp allocations for a projected annual cost of $444 million.
"This new information shows an alarming increase in the devastating impact Illegal immigration continues to have on Los Angeles County taxpayers,"
said Antonovich. "With $220 million for public safety, $400 million for healthcare, and $444 million in welfare allocations, the total cost for illegal immigrants to County taxpayers far exceeds $1 billion a year – not including the millions of dollars for education."
And that's not all; California taxpayers are also dinged to provide subsidized transport to get Pablo to his picking job: Vans get farmworkers to the fields.
Granted millions of dollars in state transportation money, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties are set to become the latest counties to join an agricultural ride-share program for unlicensed and uninsured farmworkers.
We Californians are poorly served by state government, which continues to spend itself into a hole, now amounting to $14 billion. But no one in Sacramexico ever suggests cutting welfare for illegal aliens. Instead, Arnold is considering a general cut, while Fabian Nunez and other Democrat spenders want a tax increase: State's budget shortfall points to cuts on horizon.
Each county was recently granted $3 million to purchase vans and cover the expense of operating the transportation program for three years. [...]
The new transportation system will be patterned after a five-year-old program established for laborers in Kings, Tulare and Fresno counties in the southern San Joaquin Valley.
Ron Hughes, executive director of Kings County Area Public Transit Agency, said the farmworker program has grown by more than 20% each year, and now includes Kern and Madera counties. At the peak last year, Hughes' agency had 120 vans serving growers and their workers in the five counties and expects to need 160 vans this year.
But general-fund spending under Schwarzenegger, a Republican, has grown at a faster rate than under Davis, a Democrat. It's up nearly 25 percent in four years, about the same as the spending growth under Davis in five years.
Cultural tolerance 'is not enough,' says EU culture commissioner [1/6/08]
More multicultural drivel from Europe...
Brussels (dpa) - Tolerance of different cultures is no longer enough: Europeans should create an "inter-cultural society" in which interaction across cultural boundaries is the norm, the European Union's top cultural official said Friday.
Multiculturalism actually turns accepted ideas of assimilation upside down. In earlier times, immigrants were expected to adjust to the society they voluntarily entered. Now the traditional citizens are supposed to do the social accommodation. No wonder immigrants are resented: they are trying to change their job description.
"We want to go beyond multi-cultural societies, where cultures and cultural groups simply coexist side by side: mere tolerance is not enough any more," the EU's Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth, Jan Figel, said ahead of the official launch of the European Year of Inter-cultural Dialogue 2008.
"We need to give an impulse for a true metamorphosis in our societies, so that we can create an inter-cultural Europe where cultures exchange and interact constructively," he said.
And just how is this Euro-cowering working out in reality? Not so well, since the EU concept of uber-tolerance is aimed at somehow calming the murderous, anti-western Muslims. There is no mystery here: Muslims are using "terror and migration" to destroy Europe through demographic warfare. Bishop warns of no-go zones for non-Muslims (Telegraph, Jan 6 2008):
Islamic extremists have created "no-go" areas across Britain where it is too dangerous for non-Muslims to enter, one of the Church of England's most senior bishops warns today.
Why yes, that's right. As sociology researcher Robert Putnam has found, Diversity decreases trust. (People in mixed-race areas 'feel isolated', Telegraph, June 19, 2007):
The Rt Rev Michael Nazir-Ali, the Bishop of Rochester and the Church's only Asian bishop, says that people of a different race or faith face physical attack if they live or work in communities dominated by a strict Muslim ideology. [...]
Echoing Trevor Phillips, the chairman of the Commission for Equalities and Human Rights, who has said that the country is "sleepwalking into segregation", the bishop argues that multiculturalism has led to deep divisions.
People in ethnically mixed areas are less trusting of their neighbours and live a more isolated existence, research from a New Labour "guru" has found.
The ideology of multiculturalism requires constant propaganda because it runs so counter to human nature which is stongly tribal. Which is why we see Brussels preaching to a doubtful congregation. There are no-go areas in France also, where Muslims attack outsiders, including police and firemen. Daniel Pipes notes that these places are called Sensitive Urban Zones: no one wants to offend the invaders! Where is Charles Martel when you need him?
The greater the diversity, the looser the community bonds and the more withdrawn local residents become, says Robert Putnam, an American academic based at Harvard.
McCain faces enthusiastic crowd, immigration questions [1/6/08]
Like a creature in a horror movie that rises from the dead, amnesty supporter, crony of Ted Kennedy and open-borders extremist John McCain has resurrected himself from ignominy and now looks like he may win the New Hampshire primary.
Here a legal immigrant states very well the case against Washington coddling illegal alien perps...
Though McCain didn't mention his rivals, it was clear Saturday that Romney's ads have been getting through to voters. A legal immigrant from India asked McCain to explain his alleged support for allowing illegal immigrants to collect Social Security and other benefits.
In case you have forgotten what a cad McCain is, read about how badly he has treated family members of 9/11 victims: Peter Gadiel, Joan Molinaro and Bruce DeCell.
"I worked hard and I've been in my business for 37 years and I've never asked the government for a dollar," the man told McCain. "I'm a proud American and I don't understand, for the love of me, Republicans and Democrats calling illegal immigrants guest workers and providing for them and allowing them all kind of services. And I'm given to understand you endorse some of them."
Furthermore, McCain now lies that he "never supported amnesty" for millions of illegal aliens. Hugh Hewitt included some fine quotes from the Senate amnesty debate in his article, Shades Of Marley's Ghost: John McCain And Amnesty:
MR. ENSIGN: Is he aware that it is a felony to use someone’s SocialSecurity number?
In addition, McCain was happy not so long ago to use the now-anathema A-word.
Mr. MCCAIN. I am aware of that.
Mr. ENSIGN. Under this legislation, we forgive that felony. We grant amnesty for that felony.
Mr. MCCAIN. Under this legislation, we allow the illegal immigrants a path to citizenship which, if they are convicted of felonies or misdemeanors, according to an amendment, then they would be ineligible to embark on that path to earn citizenship.
Mr. ENSIGN. Right. But, Mr. President, in Sections 601 and 614 of the legislation, it actually ensures that aliens who receive legal status cannot be prosecuted for document fraud, including the false use of Social Security numbers. Is the Senator aware of that?
"McCain Pushes Amnesty, Guest-Worker Program," reported the Tucson Citizen of May 29, 2003. The senator is quoted as saying: "Amnesty has to be an important part because there are people who have lived in this country for 20, 30 or 40 years, who have raised children here and pay taxes here and are not citizens. That has to be a component of it." The newspaper also quoted McCain as saying: "I think we can set up a program where amnesty is extended to a certain number of people who are eligible and at the same time make sure that we have some control over people who come in and out of this country."
It is disgusting that McCain now lies openly about his record and suffers little disapproval for doing so.
(Politico Playbook: The 'A' word 6/4/07)
Update: See Kausfiles for a legislative explanation of McCain's tapdancing around the definition of "amnesty" -- it's positively Clintonian.
Mexican Drug Cartels Threaten Elections [1/5/08]
Mexico continues its descent toward becoming a failed state.
MEXICO CITY, Jan. 4 -- Drug cartels are trying to influence the outcomes of major elections in Mexico by kidnapping and threatening candidates, according to Mexican Attorney General Eduardo Medina Mora.
See my 2006 article Is Mexico About To Fall Apart? Brenda Walker Says Yes for more details about how the Mexican meltdown threatens Americans.
The remarks by Medina Mora, released by his office Friday, underscored the Mexican government's growing willingness in recent months to acknowledge the threat drug cartels pose to the nation's fragile democracy. The problem is most severe, Medina Mora said, in the border states of Baja California and Tamaulipas, and in Michoacan, the home state of Mexican President Felipe Calderon.
"We have evidence, complaints from candidates who were kidnapped or intimidated, or who received threats intended to influence the results of an election and the behavior of candidates," Medina Mora told the Spanish newspaper El Pais, according to a transcript of the interview.
The latest uptick in cartels' crimes indicates that Presidente Calderon's campaign against the drug lords is not going well. The escalation shows one reason why he put the squeeze on Bush for $1.4 billion in military aid which will be stolen if history is any indicator.
Keep in mind that at the same time as Washington is moving forward to deliver over a billion taxpayer dollars to ultra-corrupt Mexico, it recently pulled the plug on funding for the border fence.
Furthermore, Mexico is losing a lot of money because American travelers are choosing to forego the beautiful tropical sunsets to avoid the worsening danger: Mexican violence driving away U.S. tourists.
PLAYAS DE ROSARITO, Mexico — Assaults on American tourists have brought hard times to hotels and restaurants that dot Mexican beaches just south of the border from San Diego.
VDARE.com version: Mexico Meltdown: First Update of 2008.
Surfers and kayakers are frightened to hit the waters of the northern stretch of Mexico's Baja California peninsula, long popular as a weekend destination for U.S. tourists. Weddings have been canceled. Lobster joints a few steps from the Pacific were almost empty on the usually busy New Year's weekend.
Americans have long tolerated shakedowns by police who boost salaries by pulling over motorists for alleged traffic violations, and tourists know parts of Baja are a hotbed of drug-related violence. But a handful of attacks since summer by masked, armed bandits — some of whom used flashing lights to appear like police — marks a new extreme that has spooked even longtime visitors.
Lori Hoffman, a San Diego-area emergency room nurse, said she was sexually assaulted Oct. 23 by two masked men in front of her boyfriend, San Diego Surfing Academy owner Pat Weber, who was forced to kneel at gunpoint for 45 minutes. They were at a campground with about 30 tents, some 200 miles south of the border.
The men shot out windows of the couple's trailer and forced their way inside, ransacked the cupboards and left with about $7,000 worth of gear, including computers, video equipment and a guitar.
Poll says most in 4 states call illegal immigration major problem [1/5/08]
Just checking -- Americans still want their immigration to be legal and their borders enforced.
TEMPE, Ariz. — A new poll finds that illegal immigration registers as a serious problem for a strong majority of people living in four Southwestern states.
The poll by Arizona State University's Institute for Social Science Research found that 58 percent of the people polled in Arizona, Texas, New Mexico and Nevada believe illegal immigration is a very serious problem, while another 27 percent believe it's a somewhat serious problem.
Nine percent say it's not too serious of a problem. Five percent say it's not a problem at all.
School reforms price tag: $6 billion [1/4/08]
California has a budget shortfall of $14 billion, but the generous Governator has an expensive new plan to improve the schools.
Some legislators familiar with the report are also pessimistic about the prospects of implementing the panel's recommendations, which include two costly initiatives: $1.1 billion to expand pre-school programs with free day-care and all-day kindergarten and $5 billion for a program for poor students who are learning English.
That's $5 billion in addition to what is already being spent to teach English to foreign kiddies. California now spends a stunning $66 billion on education costs for K-12, half of the entire budget.
But no amount of taxpayer money will ever be enough to bring California schools up to previous standards as long as the education-disinterested Mexicans keep coming.

Lewisville cabdriver sought in slayings of 2 teen daughters [1/3/08]
The double murder of Amina and Sarah Said near Dallas at the hands of an Egyptian immigrant has honor killing written all over it:
Muslim male arrives in the mid-1980s with his family, fails to assimilate but his female children do, expecting to lead American lives with individual freedom. It's another family culture clash that led to death, a syndrome that has become rather common in Europe, but not as much here. Yet.
Hopefully this terrible crime will open some eyes in this country that with Muslim immigration comes the whole gamut of brutality typical to the Religion of Peace. Many elite opinion makers believe that America does assimilation better and therefore we citizens have nothing to fear from Muslims residing in our communities. Polling of actual Muslims, however, shows that belief is a dangerous arrogance.
Certainly the perp in question will eventually get Texas justice, courtesy of Old Sparky, and will learn assimilation the hard way.
Area police continue to search for a man who they believe killed his two teenage daughters and left their bodies in a taxi at an Irving hotel. [...]
Friends: Murdered Teens Were Afraid Of Their Dad (CBS11
She said the sisters, who wore typical American clothes, didn't talk much about their family. "I didn't know they were Muslims until she told me they were Egyptian and Muslim," Liz said.
Sisters, Amina, 18, and Sarah, 17, were each shot to death. Friends of the girls say their father was Egyptian and critical of popular American lifestyles. ""He was really strict about guy relationships and talking to guys, as well as the things she wears," said Kathleen Wong, a friend of the dead teenagers. "I'm definitely 100% sure that it was her dad that killed her."
And from Yemen, a timely opinion piece expressing the traditional Muslim view: There must be violence against women. (See also Robert Spencer's commentary.)
Fathers should handle their daughters via any means that suits their mistake; thus, is it better to use violence to a certain limit or complain to the police? Shall such women then complain to the police against their fathers or brothers? It’s really amazing to hear this.

Cars torched over "calm" French New Year [1/2/08]
What's the definition of a successful New Year's celebration in Paris? "Only" 372 cars burned! Happy Eurabia, 2008!
PARIS (Reuters) - Vandals torched 372 cars as France celebrated the New Year, down on the figure last year after a night the police described as "relatively calm."
Cars are burned fairly regularly in France and the image of vehicles in flames in poor suburbs became symbolic of riots in 2005 when angry youths set fire to thousands of cars.
There is usually an increase in the number of cars torched on New Year's Eve compared to other days of the year.
"The night was relatively calm, without notable incident, there were very few direct clashes with the security forces," said a spokesman for the national police.
At 12:00 a.m. EST, the Interior Ministry said 372 vehicles had been burned -- 144 in the Paris region and 228 in the rest of France. That was down from 397 last New Year's Eve.
At the height of the 2005 riots as many as 1,400 cars were attacked in overnight violence. In protests over President Nicolas Sarkozy election last May, demonstrators set fire to 730 vehicles.
Indians Seek Help from the 'Visa God' [1/1/08]
Lovely India -- so colorful and diverse! Home to such fascinating beliefs and practices, like bride burning as a punishment for women with insufficient dowries.
These days, thousands of supposedly well educated and rational Indians believe that circumambulating a statue of Lord Balaji will bring them their much desired H-1b visa to the United States. Does America really need more diversity of this sort?
HYDERABAD, India -- Lord Balaji is one of the most-worshiped local incarnations of the Hindu Lord Vishnu. His adherents flock to his many temples to pray for things like happiness, prosperity and fertility.
Mexican drug smugglers have their Narco-Saint Jesus Malverde and Indians have their Lord Balaji.
Lately, the deity has grown particularly popular at the once-quiet Chilkur Balaji temple here, where he goes by a new nickname: the Visa God. The temple draws 100,000 visitors a week, many of whom come to pray to Lord Balaji for visas to travel or move to the U.S. and other Western countries.
Mohanty Dolagobinda is one of the Visa God's believers. Three years ago, a U.S. consulting company applied for a visa on his behalf. It was rejected. When the company tried again the following year, Mr. Dolagobinda's friends told him to visit the Chilkur Balaji temple ahead of his interview at the U.S. consulate. Weeks later, he sailed through the interview. "I've never heard of anyone who's gone to the temple whose visa got rejected," says Mr. Dolagobinda.
