In imams' airline case, a clash of rights, prejudice, security   [4/30/07]
The Christian Science Monitor takes a decidedly uninformed view of this case, carefully explaining away each symptoms of terrorism that alarmed Americans on a flight to alert the crew that strange things were going on. Imams pray in airport

Take the controversy over six imams who were removed from a US Airways flight last October, and their recent decision to sue for discrimination - not just the airline and its employees, but also some passengers who complained about their preflight behavior.
At the heart of the controversy are Americans' concern about terrorism, ignorance about Islam, and constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion and speech. In the middle are the airlines, which are charged with the difficult task of sorting out legitimate complaints about unusual behavior from those based on prejudice and fear of people's appearance and to do it in a short period when dealing with a particular flight.
Other reports have noted oddities in behavior that cannot be considered prejudicial. In addition, "other Muslims and Arabic speakers - noted them behaving suspiciously." The possibility remains that the flying imams were purposefully trying to create an incident.
The terrorist front group Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) has been pushing this case vigorously, apparently to intimidate Americans from reporting suspicious activity among Muslims. After all, they have received millions of dollars from wealthy Wahhabi Arabs to disseminate Islamist propaganda in the US media.

The cost of educating-border crossing children   [4/29/07]
This story has been reported for 10 years, and American taxpayers continue to be ripped off for the cost of educating Mexico's children on the border. Of course, American students are short-changed when limited resources are shared with thousands of parasite foreigners.

Thousands of Mexican children are flocking across the U.S. border to attend school, sparking a debate in towns along the border over whether U.S. taxpayers should have to bear the costs of educating them.
The border crossing is so common in El Paso that officials opened a special lane just for students this month.
The Houston Chronicle reported Sunday that more than 1,200 people passed through that lane from Mexico on a recent morning.
Some were college or private school students, but many were coming to attend public schools.
The influx has prompted complaints from those opposed to spending U.S. tax dollars to teach students from Mexico.
The issue is especially timely in El Paso, where the school district -- which expects to take in 10,000 new students in the next five to eight years -- is preparing for a $230 million bond election for new schools next month.
Remember that Mexico is a very wealthy nation and could well afford to educate its own children. It's just easier to freeload from sucker Americans.

Middle East: Population growth is the biggest issue to stability   [4/29/07]
Too many people cutting the national pie into smaller and smaller slices is a recipe for conflict.

Whilst the last 50 years has seen the Middle East experience unprecedented growth in wealth, with record levels of investment in infrastructure, industry, technology, education and health, The 50:50 Report highlights the region¹s population boom - which has seen the number of people rise to 377 million today from 162 million in 1957. By 2030 it is estimated to reach 524 million.
MEED's editor-in-chief Sean Brierley, says: "Our research indicates that, although Middle East economies have experienced an unprecedented boom and an enormous increase in absolute wealth, the population explosion in key economies such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Iran has meant that per capita wealth is being suppressed.
Parapundit warns Europeans that they will have gazillions of Muslims moseying over if they are not careful.

The Palestinianization of Europe   [4/28/07]
Jamie Glasov of FrontPage interviewed Bat Ye'or, the author of the important Eurabia: the Euro-Arab Axis. She is not cheerful about how the West is confronting the jihadist threat.

Bat Ye'or: The only hope for the West lies in its perception of the global jihad's aim and dangers. This is not a military war only, it is even more a spiritual, intellectual and political debate. But the European Union is taking the opposite direction by even imposing a lexicon that will censure from debate the word "jihad" and its existence in history. The cowardly European position discourages courageous Muslims who struggle for a democratization and modernization of Islamic thought and societies. Europeans are so well conditioned by Palestinianism to hate America and Israel that they are not only in denial but anesthetized.

The human face of immigration raids in Bay Area   [4/27/07]
It was clear some months ago that a major ploy of the open-borders extremists to get amnesty for tens of millions of lawbreakers was to play the sob story angle up to the hilt with tearful yet adorable kiddies. Poor little Juan Jr., goes the script, was so happy until La Migra came and took daddy away.

Mental health experts say the raids are traumatizing children. Legal scholars and public officials are raising constitutional questions about the way the raids are carried out and about their impact on communities as a whole. And immigrant advocates say changes in immigration law -- including tougher provisions enacted in 1996 -- leave little room for illegal immigrants to correct their status. [...]
The American Civil Liberties Union and the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights sued federal authorities in San Francisco on Thursday on behalf of Kebin Reyes, now 7, saying agents violated the child's civil rights when they took him into custody. Attorneys charge that the federal government violated Kebin's Fourth and Fifth Amendment rights to liberty and to being secure in his own home.
Funny how the press never covers the "trauma" suffered by children of American prisoners. Families are emotionally rattled when a parent goes to the slammer, no doubt about it. But that outcome is the result of adults knowingly breaking the law. Nobody blames the cops for someone going to jail in that instance. Only when the family is foreign do we get the sob story treatment and blame unfairly foisted upon law enforcement.

Hilary Clinton Taps Calif. Speaker To Co-Chair Her Campaign   [4/26/07]
Hilary has already enlisted the help of reconquista Raul Yzaguirre in her quest for the Presidency. Now she has made another choice which shows her disdain for retaining the sovereignty of America.

LOS ANGELES -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton will name California Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez a national co-chair of her presidential campaign on Wednesday, locking in support from a powerful statehouse dealmaker and one of the state's leading Hispanic politicians.
"Not only does she have the experience to lead this nation but to also restore our place in the world," Nunez said in an interview. "We are in a unique place in California to elect the first woman president of this country."
Nunez's endorsement will give the Clinton campaign a seasoned political hand in the nation's largest state, a major battleground for Democratic candidates.
In case you have forgotten where Fabian's loyalties lie, here's a photo of the California Assembly Speaker when he visited Mexico in 2005 and saluted the Mexican flag. Fabian Nunez salutes the Mexican flag in Mexico City
Mexico uber alles! That's the spirit of Sacramexico (the capital of Mexifornia), where Fabian resides and has considerable political clout. Too bad for us citizens who expect our interests to be #1 in the minds of our elected officials. Remember that for many Mexican and Muslims, immigration is war by other means against America.

Miami activist opposes push for immigration amnesty   [4/26/07]
Here's another black American coming out against open borders and amnesty for illegal aliens. Miami civil rights activist comes out against amnesty for illegal aliens

WASHINGTON -- T. Willard Fair, an ally of former Gov. Jeb Bush, is the new face of opposition to proposals like one championed by President Bush to allow undocumented immigrants to gain citizenship.
Fair, president of the Urban League of Greater Miami, is appearing in ads in The Washington Post and RollCall, a Capitol Hill newspaper, saying that "to black Americans, amnesty is an immoral seizure of our jobs.
''Amnesty for illegal workers is not just a slap in the face to black Americans. It's an economic disaster,'' he says in the ad, which identifies him as a civil rights leader, not as an Urban League executive.
For the full ad and other details, see Coalition for the Future American Worker.
See also the results of an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll which is relevent.
Also in our NBC/WSJ poll, a majority opposes Bush's proposal to allow illegal immigrants to earn legal status. One of the biggest detractors? African Americans. More than 60% of them oppose the plan. Will this make some of the Democratic presidential candidates re-think their support for comprehensive immigration reform, particularly when campaigning in a state like South Carolina?

Special City offers sanctuary and safety   [4/26/07]
The slimeball Mayor of San Francisco thinks that reiterating the city's support for illegal alien criminals will get him votes among his America-hating constituents in the smug city.

SAN FRANCISCO Mayor Gavin Newsom is opposed to federal law enforcement efforts to apprehend illegal immigrants who are violating deportation orders. Ess Eff, the mayor told a gathering at St. Peter's Church Sunday is a "sanctuary city" -- and has been since 1989. So, Newsom assured the audience, "I will not allow any of my department heads or anyone associated with this city to cooperate in any way, shape or form with these raids."
        Illegal immigrants, rejoice.
The folks at Immigration and Customs Enforcement are none too happy with the term "raids." Raid implies that agents sweep into homes and businesses trolling for any illegal immigrants upon whom they might happen to stumble, whereas the targets of Operation Return to Sender are "immigration fugitives" named in warrants because they have violated deportation orders or returned here after having been deported.
Often, immigrant fugitives have criminal records. ICE official Virginia Kice told me that of the 1,400 people arrested in Northern California during nine recent months, 785 were immigration fugitives and 339 had criminal convictions in America. "We prioritize those cases involving individuals who are not only immigration violators, but also have criminal convictions, often for serious offenses," said Kice.
Interestingly, the President is dismayed that some cities may not be obeying federal immigration law! Bush: 'Immigration laws should be followed'
The president expects that federal laws -- including immigration laws -- will be enforced, leaving the implication there is no room for rebel cities that decide to provide "sanctuary" for illegal aliens, according to a White House spokeswoman.
Dana Perino was responding to a question from Les Kinsolving, WND's correspondent at the White House.
"How will the United States ever develop, adopt and enforce any sort of immigration policy when individual leaders such as San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom have vowed to oppose federal enforcement of such laws and, in fact, are preparing to run a sanctuary city that would facilitate illegal activities, as just reported for the San Francisco Chronicle?" he asked.

Snowpack at 19-year low   [4/26/07]
California is in bad shape water-wise. San Francisco has already recommended voluntary reductions. Of course, years of sub-average rainfall are normal in the natural scheme of things, but the additional demand created by an unsustainably high level of population growth is profoundly unnatural. The last time California had even a moderate drought was in the late 1970s when there were 10 million fewer people in the state.

The water content of the Sierra Nevada snowpack is at its lowest level in nearly 20 years -- less than 40 percent of usual for this time of year, state water officials say.
The size of the snowpack -- the source for most of the state's drinking water -- has already prompted calls for immediate conservation. And orders to curtail use of water could become mandatory this summer or next year if 2008 is also dry.
Usually the biggest accumulation of snow occurs around April 1. But this year the snowpack didn't grow after the first week in March.
Elissa Lynn, senior meteorologist at the California Department of Water Resources, called the 2007 snowfall "pretty dismal.''
"It was a very dry March, the sixth driest on record. There was a lot less snow falling and a lot more snow melting,'' she said.

Prosecutors: Fake (Illegal Alien) ID Ring Could Have Been Deadly   [4/25/07]
The side crimes which accompany illegal immigration are dangerous criminal enterprises. One Chicago fake ID gang made $2-3 million per year and as a result was prepared to kill off any competitors.

CHICAGO -- Federal officials say when they raided a strip mall in the Little Village neighborhood on Tuesday, they were stopping a fraudulent ID ring in which competitors stood to be murdered.
The fake ID ring that operated from the Little Village Discount Mall at 26th Street and Albany Avenue took in $2 million to $3 million a year, and has become "competitive and violent," federal prosecutors said.
As CBS 2 Investigator Pam Zekman reports, the government says workers who peddled phony IDs were smuggled in from Mexico and required to pay the organization $140 for each set of phony IDs they typically sold for $2,300.
"These documents are not only used by individuals that want to possess them to get a job; these are also used by criminal organizations, they are also utilized by potential terrorists," said Elissa Brown of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Here's another report about the raid, 'I shot that dude in the liver and lungs', emphasizing the violence of the persons arrested. Nevertheless, dozens of foreigners and their supporters marched in protest against the arrests. They love their criminals in Chicago. And Mexico.
Julio Leija-Sanchez was the CEO of a thriving $3 million-a-year business and, like any businessman, needed to eliminate the competition.
So he picked up the phone and ordered them killed, the feds alleged Wednesday.
Leija-Sanchez, 31, of Oak Lawn, was one of 12 people arrested Tuesday as part of a federal investigation into a highly sophisticated business that provided fake IDs to up to 15,000 people a year in Chicago. Ten others were charged but are fugitives.

Drunk driving is suspected in crash that killed woman   [4/24/07]
Pedro Santos killed Nicole Allen Here's another young American struck down at the beginning of adulthood by a drunk driving illegal alien. Nicole Allen, 21, was killed when the car in which she was riding as a back-seat passenger was struck from behind by a Lincoln Town Car driven by Mexican Pedro Santos.

Allen graduated in 2004 from Parkway North High School [in Creve Couer Missouri]. She worked as a server at Red Robin restaurant and was a junior at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, studying photography, graphic design and art history.
"She was a cute, petite, fun-loving friend," said her aunt Debbie Nolen of Springfield, Mo. "She was a little angel."
The fact that Santos is an illegal immigrant was not lost on Allen's family, who gathered at the home on Gold Leaf. That further enraged them.
"He had no business being on the road anyway, but he's drunk on top of it," Nolen said.

PBS' Homage To Islamism   [4/24/07]
I watched several of the PBS documentaries from America at a Crossroads and found the series entirely too cheerful about the Islamist threat and totally clueless about the stupidity of welcoming enemies through immigration. Behead Those Who Insult Islam sign
As usual, Investors Business Daily nails it.

Islamofascism: PBS just aired a "documentary" intended to chronicle "the diversity of Muslim life in America." So why does it give so much face time to anti-American Islamists?
Secular Muslims who want to reform Islam are nowhere to be found in producer Robert MacNeil's film, "The Muslim Americans," part of a PBS series called "America at a Crossroads." Instead, extremists masquerading as moderates are lionized.
Take Sheik Hamza Yusuf, who has a starring role. According to MacNeil, the California imam preaches "tolerance" and "peace," and even hiply incorporates the "Super Bowl" into his sermons. This, we are told, is the progressive face of Islam in America.
See also a Frontpage article written by a producer of a hard-hitting film that was rejected: PBS in Islamist Wonderland.
From some of the trailers I had seen, I was prepared for the show to be a puff piece for Islam. It was that and a lot worse. It was, in fact, a propaganda film for Islamism. For example, "The Muslim Americans" refused to acknowledge even the potential for home-grown Islamic extremism in the US. Nor did the documentary exhibit any interest in finding out about Islamic radicalism and its implications for America and its Muslim community.
The overall impression the viewer was left with was that life for American Muslims after 9/11 had taken a dramatic turn for the worse. Hate crimes, discrimination, racial profiling and airport hassles, Muslim mosques firmly "in the crosshairs of law enforcement" -- this, apparently, was now typical of Muslim life in America. One of the interviewees even claims that she stopped attending mosque out of fear that doing so would get her labeled as a "terrorist." Interestingly, this message seems to have escaped many of her co-religionists, since the mosques shown in the documentary were invariably full.
Incidentally, this article contains a mention of how many terrorist prosecutions had occurred as of June 2006: 441. It's good to have an update from the report in May 2005 that the DOJ had charged 375 persons in terror-related cases.
There is, of course, no doubt that the vast majority of American Muslims are peaceful and patriotic. But the idyllic picture that Robin McNeil and the NewsHour luminaries have put together is, at best, a misleading Potemkin village and, at worst, an example of the genre that was once called agitprop. How else do you explain the documentary's unwillingness to address the inconvenient fact that, since 9/11 alone, the Department of Justice has recorded 441 defendants, the vast majority of them Muslim, charged for terrorist-related crimes, resulting in 261 convictions with 150 cases still pending by June 2006.
Here's a report that the producers have organized a special, by-invitation showing of the spiked film "Islam vs. Islamist" in Washington near the White House: Snubbed PBS film gets private viewing. Hey, what about us taxpayers? We paid for that film.

How the bay was saved   [4/23/07]
The environmental movement has lately become so corrupted by left-wing ideology and money that it's easy to forget how it began as a necessary response to truly misguided ideas of "progress." The growthsters of the mid-century San Francisco Bay Area had decided that the space taken by all that annoying water could be filled in to build housing and other commercial development.
What an amazing viewpoint, that the unique Bay had no value and was a waste of space, a mindset that ignored boating, fishing, recreational use, the function of the bay to moderate temperature -- not to mention that it is beautiful. Of course, the commercial value of a full-sized and environmentally healthy Bay is huge.
In 1961, 10 people met in a Berkeley home to discuss what could be done to stop the infill and save the Bay. San Francisco Bay Fill Map

Kerr and her friends laid out the problem: San Francisco Bay was growing steadily smaller. Its primary use, other than shipping, was for sewage and garbage disposal. On the afternoon breeze in Berkeley you could whiff the persistent "East Bay stink" -- the aroma from untreated sewage.
At night you could see the bay on fire where garbage was dumped in the shallows and set ablaze. The bay was being filled for airports, harbor facilities, freeways, factories, salt production, shopping malls and subdivisions.
The city of Berkeley had plans to double its size by filling 2,000 acres offshore. Other cities had similar intentions. If all the plans went forward, most of this superlative body of water would disappear.
The meeting grew into the organization Save the Bay, which has become a successful model for many grassroots groups involved in local conservationist issues. And today, the Bay is 40,000 acres larger than it was in 1961.
The writer of this piece, Harold Gilliam, is a long-time San Francisco area environmentalist, who has recognized that too much immigration is bad for the environment.
"Despite the ravings of some racist fanatics, immigration is not a racial problem; it is a population problem. It is projected to be a principal cause of U.S. population growth. Is it "immigrant bashing" or simply common foresight to ask what would be required for a doubled or tripled or quadrupled population? What about jobs, schools, parks, housing, air quality, open space, farmland and food production, transportation and infrastructure of all kinds?... In California the most conspicuous resource in short supply is water. In drought years, this state does not have enough available water for the present population at current rates of use."
Harold Gilliam, San Francisco Examiner, June 26, 1998
Check out the live Bay cam from the Lawrence Hall of Science to see what success looks like.

Newsom pledges to make SF a sanctuary for illegal immigrants   [4/23/07]
This is hardly news. San Francisco has been a sanctuary city for illegal aliens since 1989, so it's odd that the city's leftist mayor feels he has to restate his loyalty toward lawbreakers, against law-abiding citizens.

Mayor Gavin Newsom vowed Sunday to maintain San Francisco as a sanctuary for immigrants and do everything he can to discourage federal authorities from conducting immigration raids.
The mayor cannot stop federal authorities from making arrests, Newsom told about 300 mostly Latino members of St. Peter's Church and other religious groups supporting immigrants. But no San Francisco employee will help with immigration enforcement.
"I will not allow any of my department heads or anyone associated with this city to cooperate in any way shape or form with these raids," Newsom declared. "We are a sanctuary city, make no mistake about it."
It's sanctuary policies that protect criminals from normal law enforcement and lead to tragedies like the deaths of Tessa Tranchant, 16, left, and Allison Kunhardt, 17, in Virginia Beach due to that city's pro-illegal practices.
Meanwhile, in North Carolina, Sheriff Terry Johnson is working to deport illegal aliens.
Johnson said the program has dual benefits for Alamance County. It brings in money, because the federal government pays about $66 a night for every immigration detainee who stays in the jail. And it rids the county of illegal immigrants, who he contends sponge public resources and are more prone to commit crimes than legal residents.
"Their values are a lot different -- their morals -- than what we have here," Johnson said. "In Mexico, there's nothing wrong with having sex with a 12-, 13-year-old girl ... They do a lot of drinking down in Mexico."

"Redwoods Or Immigrants?" That's America's Choice On Earth Day 2007   [4/22/07]
My VDARE.com Earth Day article points out that from a conservationist viewpoint, excessive legal immigration is just as objectionable as the illegal kind.

    April 22 is Earth Day.
But for genuine environmentalists, April truly is the cruelest month. So many of those who claim to care about the health of the planet are stuck in an ideology that ignores the obvious: As Jacques Cousteau observed: "Population growth is the primary source of environmental damage."
And the elected officials most insistent that action be taken on climate change are often the same ones who want to welcome unlimited foreigners to the country with the largest environmental footprint: the U.S.

Sudan man forced to 'marry' goat   [4/22/07]
Talk about a shotgun marriage! You use the merchandise, bub, and it's yours!

A Sudanese man has been forced to take a goat as his "wife", after he was caught having sex with the animal.
The goat's owner, Mr Alifi, said he surprised the man with his goat and took him to a council of elders.
They ordered the man, Mr Tombe, to pay a dowry of 15,000 Sudanese dinars ($50) to Mr Alifi.
"We have given him the goat, and as far as we know they are still together," Mr Alifi said.

Jihad and the Collapse of the Swedish Model   [4/21/07]
Fjordman reflects on the rapid downfall of Sweden on the occasion of the rioting in Malmo, Sweden's third-largest city. Malmo Sweden

A Swedish man was nearly killed for the crime of wearing clothes with his own national flag while Sweden was participating in the 2006 football World Cup. Some "Multicultural youths" found this to be an intolerable provocation, and the 24-year-old man was run down by a car in Malmo, where Muhammad is becoming the most common name for newborn boys.
Feriz and Pajtim, members of Gangsta Albanian Thug Unit in Malmo, explain how they mug people downtown. They target a lone victim. "We surround him and beat and kick him until he no longer fights back," Feriz said. "You are always many more people than your victims. Cowardly? ... I have heard that from many, but I disagree. The whole point is that they're not supposed to have a chance." They didn't express any sympathy for their victims. "If they get injured, they just have themselves to blame for being weak," said Pajtim and shrugged.
The wave of robberies the city of Malmo has witnessed is part of a war against the Swedes." This is the explanation given by young robbers from immigrant background in interviews with Petra Akesson. "When we are in the city and robbing we are waging a war, waging a war against the Swedes." This argument was repeated several times. "Power for me means that the Swedes shall look at me, lie down on the ground and kiss my feet." The boys explain, laughingly, that "there is a thrilling sensation in your body when you're robbing, you feel satisfied and happy, it feels as if you've succeeded, it simply feels good. ... We rob every single day, as often as we want to, whenever we want to. The Swedes don't do anything, they just give us the stuff. They're so wimpy."
You hadn't heard of Muslims rioting in Sweden?
Rosengard, an area with a very high immigrant population, is yet again on the frontpage as the riots from Saturday continue. On Sunday, several storage facilities were set ablaze.
But the most disturbing thing was that a 17-year-old boy was brutally assaulted by a group of 6 "youths" (as the newspaper described them). They beat him so severely that he is now treated in intesive care in Lund Hospital. [...]
The boy, in critical condition, is sedated and is on life support with a respirator.
American media is not interested in chronicling the demographic changes that are repopulating Europe with an implacable enemy of western civilization.

U.S. warns citizens about Mexican drug war violence   [4/21/07]
It has been several months into Mexico Presidente Calderon's crackdown on drug cartels. Unfortunately, the traffickers are not going down without a fight: violence has been increasing on all fronts, to the point where the US State Department has issued a travel warning. Similar warnings in the past brought shreiks of objection from Mexico City, so we know that the situation is badly deteriorated.

MEXICO CITY -- The U.S. State Department warned Americans Thursday of increasingly violent drug gangs in Mexico and urged travelers to stick to main highways and well-known tourist destinations.
Mexico has seen a wave of drug-related brutality recently and President Felipe Calderón has sent thousands of soldiers to areas near the U.S. border as well as the resort city of Acapulco to wage war against narcotics cartels.
"U.S. citizens should make every attempt to travel on main roads during daylight hours," the State Department said in its warning, which replaces another issued in January.
Americans should also stay in busy tourist areas and avoid showing off flashy jewelry and large amounts of cash, the State Department said.
Much of the violence is between rival cartels seeking to grab control of drug routes to the United States, but the State Department warned foreigners were also at risk.
To date this year, drug-related deaths number more than 600. A Mexican journalist recently shot in Acapulco died on the doorstep of a popular back-packer hotel.
In Tijuana, 6-8 cartel thugs stormed a hospital Wednesday and a gunfight ensued in which three were killed. The men were apparently trying to free a confederate being treated.
In another sign of increasing anarchy, seven Mexican journalists have been murdered since October and three have disappeared.
Here's more about the current Mexico meltdown from Lou Dobbs on Thursday.
Also this week, the body of dozens of drug cartel shooting victims discovered on the street and in cars throughout Mexico. This man was killed in the resort city of Acapulco. These bodies were found in Cancun. It's a clear counteroffensive to Mexican President Felipe Calderon's battle against narcoterrorism.
PRES. FELIPE CALDERON, MEXICO (through translator): Organized crime is putting at risk the security of the state, but my government will return the rule of law.
WIAN: There have been successes. Mexican agents captured a Gulf cartel kingpin and two associates Tuesday. Federal troops also arrested more than 100 police officers allegedly working for drug cartels in the northern border state of Nuevo Leone.
Just across the border in Texas, a gun battle between rival groups of illegal alien smugglers at a busy Houston intersection. [...]
WIAN: One suspected illegal alien died. Another is in critical condition, eight fled the scene. Hijacking loads of illegal aliens is a growing problem along the Mexican border, as alien drug smugglers react to increased law enforcement efforts on both side. (END VIDEOTAPE)

Victims Of Tolerance?   [4/20/07]
Killer Cho with hammer Investor's Business Daily well describes the psychological dysfunction of campus life these days, when even criminal behavior is excused under the leftist no-blame ideology of multiculturalism.

So why did they all tolerate his abusive behavior for so long?
Was it because he was a foreign student? Was it because he was a minority? Was it because multiculturalism has robbed us of our last sense, even our instinct for survival? Or was it simply because the campus lifestyle, more than the real world, tends to accommodate, even nurture, idiosyncratic behavior?
Whatever it was, the kid-glove treatment the university culture afforded him amounted to a mass enabling of Cho's psychotic behavior. Extreme tolerance let him become the tyrant who exploded in murderous rage that Black Monday in Blacksburg.

'Hate Incident' in City   [4/19/07]
In Lewiston Maine, the Somali refugee community, which chose that city because of its generous welfare system, has its turbans in a bunch because of a ham sandwich. You can't make this stuff up. It was a kid prank at worst, and the diversity nannies are calling it a crime.

One student has been suspended and more disciplinary action could follow a possible hate crime at Lewiston Middle School, Superintendent Leon Levesque said Wednesday.
On April 11, a white student placed a ham steak in a bag on a lunch table where Somali students were eating. Muslims consider pork unclean and offensive.
The act reminded students of a man who threw a pig's head into a Lewiston mosque last summer.
The school incident is being treated seriously as "a hate incident," Levesque said. Lewiston police are investigating, and the Center for the Prevention of Hate Violence is working with the school to create a response plan.
"We've got some work to do to turn this around and bring the school community back together again," Levesque said.

Frank Morris: As immigration rates rise, blacks' prosperity drops   [4/18/07]
It's refreshing to read about the damage to Black Americans from open borders spelled out clearly. The writer, Frank Morris, is a former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.

For many African-Americans, today's debate over immigration evokes a bitter sense of deja vu. In 1965, a new immigration law restarted mass immigration just as African-Americans, emerging from long years of segregation, were poised to enter the economic mainstream.
In the decades since, millions of immigrants — legal and illegal — have settled here, causing the immigrant population to balloon from fewer than 10 million in 1970 to about 36 million today.
Black Americans have suffered economically in periods of high immigration. On the other hand, when immigration ebbed and labor supply was tight — during World War I, for example — African-American prosperity soared.

U.S. may open doors to 25,000 refugees   [4/18/07]
More dangerous and destructive policies from Washington, which is supposed to be protecting the nation.

The United States could take in up to 25,000 Iraqi refugees this year -- more than three times the number it previously agreed to admit -- in an effort to provide some relief to the crisis affecting several Arab countries, the State Department said yesterday.
The department also said it plans to allow Iraqis and Afghans working for the U.S. government in their respective countries to immigrate to the United States after only three years of service instead of the current 15 required by law.
"It's fair to say that, if we get the referrals [from the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees], we could resettle up to 25,000 Iraqi refugees within the president's determination this year," said Ellen Sauerbrey, assistant secretary of state for population, refugees and migration.
But the terrorist threat in the future is dwarfed by the immediate injustice of forcing American soldiers to fight longer tours of duty for democracy in Iraq while the people who should be doing the heavy lifting are being delivered to safety in the US.
These so-called "refugees" are rats leaving a sinking ship and will not be welcomed by many citizens.

Polygamous husbands can claim cash for their harems   [4/18/07]
Britain continues to commit slow-motion suicide, one idiotic policy after another, which shred traditional values.

Polygamous husbands settling in Britain with multiple wives can claim extra benefits for their "harems" even though bigamy is a crime in the UK, it has emerged.
Opposition MPs are demanding an urgent change in the law, claiming that the Government is recognising and rewarding a custom which has no legal status and which is "alien" to this country's cultural traditions. [...]
Islamic law allows a man to take up to four wives, providing he can provide for them fairly and equally. But British law only ever recognises one spouse, while bigamy is punishable by up to seven years in jail.
However, if a husband and his wives arrive and settle in Britain having wed in a country where polygamy is legal, then the UK benefits system recognises his extra wives as dependents and pays them accordingly.

NYC bookseller jailed for terror funding   [4/18/07]
Islam will dominate the world sign You have to be proactive to keep up with terrorist trials in this country. Hundreds of terrorists have been sentenced since 9/11, with little attention from the MSM.
Perhaps they don't want us to worry our little heads about enemies being able to enter at will. After all, Muslim immigration has been on the uptick for a while now.
Here's a story about a recent sentencing of another immigrant, doubtless here for a better life.

A former New York City bookseller has been convicted of conspiring to send money to terror camps in Afghanistan and Chechnya.
U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska sentenced Moroccan-born Abdulrahman Farhane, 52, to 13 years in prison on the charge, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

Housing Slump Takes a Toll on Illegal Immigrants   [4/17/07]
Every cloud has a silver lining, as they say. The slump in housing construction has freed up many illegal alien workers to return to the fields whence they carme. How fortunate for the growers...

As building jobs have grown scarce, many of the workers who left farm labor a few years ago are returning to where they came from. They can be seen once again hunched in clusters under the unremitting sun, cutting heads of lettuce or slicing off spears of asparagus for minimum wage, clinging to the hope that home building will resume again.
"If another construction job comes up, I'll go there," said Cresencio B., a former Mexico City policeman who arrived illegally in the United States in 1991.
Cresencio B. toiled on farms up and down the West Coast until he got a job cutting wood segments on a construction crew two years ago, making about $11 an hour. But building jobs dried up in October. In early April, he was in a tomato field nearby, brandishing his hoe for $7.50 an hour, clearing out the weeds and the leftover garlic sprouts from last year's crop.

Campus gunman was permanent legal immigrant; lived in United States for 14 years   [4/17/07]
Virginia Tech shooter Cho Seung-Hui The butcher of Virginia Tech has been definitely identified as Cho Seung-Hui.

The Virginia Tech student identified as the assailant in Monday's deadly gun rampage was a South Korean immigrant who had been in the United States since 1992 and who held a green card signifying his status as a legal permanent U.S. resident, federal officials said Tuesday.
Cho Seung-Hui, a 23-year-old English major, was listed with a home address in Centreville, Va, a suburb of Washington, D.C., not far from Dulles International Airport.
Immigration records maintained by the Department of Homeland Security show that Cho was born in South Korea on Jan. 18, 1984 and entered the United States through Detroit on Sept. 2, 1992. He had last renewed his green card on Oct. 27, 2003.
After such a horrific crime, the ethnic group on the hotseat commonly issues preemptive statements condemning a backlash against them; these days such complaints are practically automatic. And this is no exception: Korea fears prejudice with shooting link. It's a form of cultural intimidation, namely that if you even mention that the killer was an immigrant then you must be some sort of racist.
As a result, the important discussions about how difficult it is to be an immigrant never happen. The media harrangue constantly about how wonderful immigration is, and the stress of adjusting to a totally alien culture is not mentioned. Immigrants are expected to be happy and grateful, while many are not. Stress is cumulative, and when the difficulties of cultural adjustment are piled on top of the normal problems of young adulthood, some just explode. Just two months ago, a Bosnian teenager living in Salt Lake City killed five in a rampage in a shopping mall.
We do no one any favor by encouraging millions from vastly different cultures to move here. It's lose-lose for everyone concerned. How many more innocent Americans have to die before people realize that diversity immigration has been a monumental failure?

Gunman kills 32 at Virginia Tech before being killed   [4/16/07]
Here's the first report about the possible identity of the Virginia Tech shooter, who was described as Asian by students who saw him and lived to tell the tale.

Authorities were investigating whether the gunman who killed 32 people on the Virginia Tech campus in the deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history was a Chinese man who arrived in the United States last year on a student visa.
The 24-year-old man arrived in San Francisco on United Airlines on Aug. 7 on a visa issued in Shanghai, the source said. Investigators have not linked him to any terrorist groups, the source said.
Police believe three bomb threats on the campus last week may have been attempts by the man to test the campus' security response, the source said.

Americans Call for Immigration Law Enforcement   [4/16/07]
Americans want immigration laws enforced and their borders protected.

(Angus Reid Global Monitor) - Many adults in the United States have a clear idea of the way their authorities should deal with illegal immigration, according to a poll by Zogby International for Judicial Watch. 66 per cent of respondents think more emphasis should be placed on law enforcement, and 72 per cent would enlist local officers for this duty.
Here are more details from Judicial Watch which engaged the Zogby polling company to do the research.
    •   Overall, 66% of likely voters believe that more emphasis should be placed on law enforcement when addressing the issue of illegal immigration, including 51.6% of Hispanics and 56.8% of self-described political "liberals." Only 5% said the emphasis on law enforcement should be diminished, including 3% of Hispanics.
    •   79% believe public officials should not use taxpayer funds to operate day laborer sites that help illegal aliens, including 71.9% of Hispanics and 70% of self-described political "liberals."
    •   72% of likely voters believe local law enforcement officers should help enforce federal immigration laws, including 40% of Hispanics and 55% of self-described political "liberals."
"The American people speak with one voice on the topic of illegal immigration. Virtually every voter demographic — even those supposedly most sympathetic to illegal aliens — want our illegal immigration laws to be strictly enforced," said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. "Overwhelmingly, the American people want local officials to help address illegal immigration through law enforcement, not taxpayer subsidies and 'sanctuary' policies."

Airport Hits Cabbies for Refusing Fares   [4/16/07]
The Minneapolis airport has been a battleground for the Taxi Jihad in which Muslim cab drivers refuse to carry riders possessing alcohol and blind persons with seeing-eye dogs. It's all about cultural intimidation, of course, and forcing Americans to accept Muslim ways out of misguided politeness.
Frankly, the idea that a blind person would be left in a Minnesota snow drift by a miserable Son of Allah makes my blood boil. I'm glad to see the Airport Commission toughening up. There's no right to a be a taxi driver at an airport that serves the general public if you are not willing to do the job.

Taxi drivers who refuse service to travelers carrying alcohol at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport face tougher penalties despite protests from Muslim cabbies who sought a compromise for religious reasons, officials said Monday.
The Metropolitan Airports Commission said new penalties were needed to ensure customers get safe and reliable taxi service, and voted to suspend a driver's airport taxi license for 30 days for the first offense and revoke it for two years for a second offense. The new penalties take effect May 11.
Airport officials say more than 70 percent of the cabbies at the airport are Muslim, and many of them say Islamic law forbids them from giving rides to people carrying alcohol.
Under the old rules, a driver who refused to transport someone carrying alcohol would be told to go to the back of the taxicab line. Airport officials said that since January 2002, there have been more than 4,800 instances of drivers' refusing to take alcohol-carrying travelers

Global Warming a Security Risk   [4/16/07]
Some military folks believe that climate change presents dangerous scenarios regarding national security.

Global warming poses a "serious threat to America's national security" with terrorism worsening and the U.S. will likely be dragged into fights over water and other shortages, top retired military leaders warn in a new report. [...]
"We're going to have a war over water," [Stanford scientist Terry] Root said. "There's just not going to be enough water around for us to have for us to need to live with and to provide for the natural environment."
University of Victoria climate scientist Andrew Weaver said the military officers were smart to highlight the issue of refugees who flee unstable areas because of global warming.
"There will be tens of millions of people migrating, where are we going to put them?" Weaver said.

Among Catholic priests, Vietnamese are the new Irish   [4/15/07]
The Vaticrat hierarchy in America loves to celebrate diversity, particularly when it is of their faith. The Catholic Church is among the most fervent supporters of open borders, a position that reflects the Catholics' Marxism more than any adherence to scripture. Funny that so many of the Third World "immigrants" we have today are Catholic...
Anyway, this story is a heart warmer full of Horatio Alger pluck about how Vietnamese now provide many priests for the church.

"Vietnamese priests are filling the gap," said Ryan Lilyengren, a spokesman for the Diocese of Orange. "People are calling them the new Irish."
Though Asians are only 1% of the estimated 77 million U.S. Catholics, they account for 12% of Catholic seminary students, according to the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University. In places such as Orange County, home to the largest Vietnamese community outside Vietnam, that has translated into major change: Of 181 diocesan priests, Lilyengren said, almost 28% are Asian, predominantly Vietnamese.
The influx of Vietnamese clergy comes as the number of priests nationwide has dropped nearly 30% in three decades, from 58,900 in 1975 to about 41,700 last year.
Vietnamese immigrants are stepping in, experts say, for a number of reasons. They come from a culture steeped in religious values that bestows high status on the clergy. They also grew up in a poor country where entering the priesthood was an economic step up. And many lived through political and religious repression when they weren't allowed to practice their faith, let alone become priests.
Over a million Vietnamese refugees came to America after the war. Many have worked hard using the educational opportunities here to become successful, although Vietnamese are well represented among the poaching community.
However, the next batch of refugees on the bench will be from Iraq. The Senate has opened the doors to permitting a few hundred "translators" even while American soldiers are fighting and dying. But no one thinks the numbers will stop there, since there are already media loudmouths like Sixty Minutes shrieking about the immorality of not rescuing hundreds of thousands, if not millions. Naturally, Iraqi refugees will not be adequately screened for enemies, and creating such an immigration program is a huge national security threat.

Anti-Jihad Caucus   [4/14/07]
Rep Sue Myrick is providing crucial leadership on tough issues where others fear to tread, such as creating the Scott Gardner Act, which would require drunk-driving illegal aliens be deported immediately upon conviction of DUI. Here she is again, focusing Congressional attention on the real enemy of our time, not vague disembodied "terrorism" but determined Islamofascists who are following a plan for world conquest by Islam.

Maintaining a high level of vigilance against an enemy is wearisome business, especially in this war. We salute those who have not succumbed to 9/11 fatigue.
One tireless watchdog is Rep. Sue Myrick, R-N.C., who earlier this year founded the Anti-Terrorism/Jihad Caucus to educate fellow lawmakers and Americans in general about the threat from militant Islam.
"The general public doesn't understand the threats we face from radical jihadists — who they are, what they want and what we can do about the threat," the feisty Myrick says on her Web site. "Americans are not being properly informed about the nature of the jihadist threat and their plans to do us harm."

Future for Los Angeles' middle class is uncertain   [4/14/07]
Many people agree that Los Angeles is lost as part of America, due to immigration anarchy. La Times manages to do its usual tapdance of describing the symptoms without facing the cause. Los Angeles Mexico billboard

You may remember the ruckus that arose a couple of years ago when a local Spanish-language television station, Channel 62, put up a billboard publicizing its newscasts. Next to the words "Los Angeles," the abbreviation "CA" was crossed out and "Mexico" written in its stead.
Many reacted angrily, saying the sign was glorifying illegal immigration. Others accused the complainers of being racist xenophobes and maintained that the ad was simply celebrating the region's Latino flavor.
Whatever you thought of the promotion, I'm here to tell you: We are, in at least one sense, perilously close to becoming Los Angeles, Mexico.
I am referring specifically to an L.A. area that finds itself deeply divided along class lines, with 250,000 millionaires, 1.6 million poor people (with annual incomes of about $30,000 for a family of four) and those in the middle facing a miserable squeeze.
Once the paragon of the American dream, Los Angeles in the last 25 years has become a place where the level of income inequality doesn't look too much different from what's found south of the border or in any number of developing nations.
This article starts out so well, by accurately describing the symptoms of a city that is rapidly becoming the Third World. But the author can't come to grips with how importing poverty on a massive scale harms the families of average means through worsened schools, increased taxes and flight of middle class taxpayers (both white and black). Angelenos have voted against Mexicanization with their feet, moving to areas of the country which are still recognizable as America.
There is no single reason that the middle class is falling ever more behind. Those who've studied the matter point to a whole bunch of factors, including globalization; the transition from a manufacturing to a service economy; top corporate executives raking in obscene amounts of income at the expense of the rank and file; and the decline of unions.

Kadra attacked in public   [4/13/07]
Norwegian Somali Kadra Women Muslims who speak out against the cruelty of Islam are in great danger, like Samira Minir as memorialized by Fjordman, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali who still lives with constant security. Norwegian-Somali Kadra has criticized imams for their support of the brutal practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) even though it is not required by the Koran. As a result, she was severely beaten up by several cowardly Muslo-thugs in the middle of Oslo.

Kadra was attacked and beaten senseless by seven or eight persons of Somali origin, newspaper VG reports.
"I was terrified. While I lay on the pavement they kicked me and screamed that I had trampled on the Koran. Several shouted Allah-o-akbar (God is great) and also recited from the Koran," Kadra told VG.
Kadra linked the attack to recent remarks in VG where she said that the Koran's views on women needed to be reinterpreted.
Kadra said that the gang of Somali men attacked her around 3 a.m. in downtown Oslo on Thursday. A medical examination found that she had several broken ribs, NRK (Norwegian Broadcasting) reports. Kadra filed charges and was due to speak with police on Friday.
Somalia has the highest incidence in the world of FGM, at 98 percent.
Update 4/16: Arrests have been made. Two held in Kadra assault

Minorities are the emerging face of the subprime crisis   [4/13/07]
Here's an "immigrant" sob story in the current topic of scam mortgages. These characters sound exactly like illegal aliens — they are uneducated agricultural laborers who don't speak English, though the article does not mention their status. In this case, two picker couples went together on purchasing a $720,000 house, believing the monthly payments could be brought down to $3000 through the magic of creative financing. Right.

When Alberto and Rosa Ramirez began looking for a home, they never imagined that 18 months later they would personify a national real estate crisis. It's not that they bought a house with walls crawling with toxic mold or inherited an insane neighbor next door or, even, God forbid, that they didn't buy at all. They bought, and they love, their slice of the American Dream.
"It's all very nice and beautiful," Rosa tells me through a translator. "The neighborhood is very peaceful. The problem is not with the house at all. It's the price of the house."
Indeed, in a different era (when housing prices were lower), their story might have been one of those bootstrap tales about homeownership transforming immigrant lives. The husband and wife work as strawberry pickers in the fields around Watsonville, and each earns about $300 a week. They have three children. Not only did they dream the impossible dream, they managed to finance it.

Student may have exposed others to TB   [4/13/07]
The public health threat from open borders appears to be worsening rapidly, although with little attention.

SAN DIEGO - A community college student diagnosed with tuberculosis may have exposed as many as 200 students, teachers and staff in Linda Vista to the disease, county health officials announced Thursday.
The exposure took place in an English as a Second Language class between Jan 2. and March 23 at the Linda Vista Presbyterian Church Education Center on Ulric Street near Linda Vista Road, according to a spokeswoman for the county Health and Human Services Agency.
The student is in treatment. Testing is recommended for anyone who may have been exposed a total of 16 hours or more.
"We've actually been moving fast in the last two days to notify everybody, both by phone and by (registered) letter," said Rich Dittbenner, a spokesman for the San Diego Community College District. "We're reaching out through all available means."

Mandatory restrictions: Water agencies say imposed summer cutbacks possible   [4/12/07]
Water shortages are looming throughout California, and here in the north the authorities are already talking about voluntary restrictions. However, I don't see any suggestion in the LA Times that people in the southland should decrease their water usage even though they have more people (LA County nearly 10 million) and have gotten less rain. During the drought of the late 1970s, northern Californians were forced to live under severe rationing while water from the north flowed south where swimming pools remained full and lawns were watered with no thought of cutback.
At any rate, there's no sense in conserving water when Washington is determined to increase population growth by millions of people per year.

More than 2 million Bay Area water users could face mandatory water restrictions this summer if they do not cut back on consumption now, the head of the San Francisco Public Utility Commission said Wednesday.
The Sierra snowpack -- the major water source for people in San Francisco, parts of the Peninsula, the South Bay and southern Alameda County -- is less than half of what it should be for this time of year. As of the beginning of the month, the snow pack was at 46 percent of normal.
Additionally, precipitation at Hetch Hetchy Reservoir is at the lowest level since 1987 and at the fourth-lowest level since record-keeping started in 1919. The reservoir is the source San Francisco's water.
Below is shown a water-restriction gizmo to put in your shower. Water restriction gizmo
Needless to say, none of the MSM reporting the water shortage mention that it is the immigration-fueled population explosion that now forces Californians into water restriction after just one season of lower-than-average rainfall.

Hispanic DUIs, gang crime down in 287(g)-equipped Charlotte   [4/11/07]
In Nashville, they are just getting their 287 (g) system set up, spurred by the citizenry's shock about several crimes last year in Tennessee committed by illegal aliens, including the drunk driving accidents that killed Sean and Donna Wilson as well as Charlie Derrington and the savage murder of Mary Sadler in her home.
To give Nashville residents an idea of what kind of results they might reasonably hope to achieve, this article examines the experience of Mecklenburg County in North Carolina, which has also suffered some terrible crimes, e.g. the death of a college student at the hands of a multiple offender DUI illegal alien.

In its quest to become the latest American city to take advantage of a little-used federal program to identify illegal aliens and enforce federal immigration laws locally, Nashville based its 287(g) program almost entirely after the one implemented by Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) Sheriff Jim Pendergraph.
Although Charlotte has a smaller Hispanic immigrant community than Nashville, the immediate results of its 287(g) program have been statistically substantial.
In the program's first nine months, Charlotte's specially trained sheriffs identified 1,520 arrestees as having entered the country illegally.
Importantly, the number of arrests of hispanics for drunk driving decreased by nearly two-thirds over the first year of operation, indicating that the message got out quickly that drunk driving was no long going to be tolerated.

Adopt our baby girls, India begs Britons   [4/10/07]
In my recent Vdare.com article Dogs, Frogs and Dalits, I pointed out the extreme sexism of the traditional culture of India, and that tens of millions of females are "missing" because of sex-selection abortion and infanticide. India recently instituted a system of orphanages for the unwanted girls who would otherwise be killed, but the government would prefer foreign adoption to the mass institutionalization of potentially millions, which would be embarassing for a country which fancies itself to be advanced.

India however has unique problems which ministers believe foreign adoption could play a part in solving. Thousands of Indian baby girls are killed at birth by poor mothers who cannot afford the lavish weddings and dowries they would one day be lumbered with, and also by middle-class women under pressure to bear their husband a prized son.
The government has encouraged more 'street cribs' to give mothers of unwanted daughters an alternative to 'female infanticide.' If it is successful, it will mean even more baby girls being dumped in orphanages, and more to find families for.
India is also home to a high degree of child abuse generally, according to a recent government studey: Abuse of Indian children 'common'.
Two out of every three children in India are physically abused, according to a landmark government study.
Commissioned by the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the study says 53% of the surveyed children reported one or more forms of sexual abuse.
This is the first time the government has done such an exhaustive survey on the controversial issue of child abuse.

What Does Illegal Immigration Cost?   [4/10/07]
Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation has published a thorough study of the cost of low-skilled immigration and the results are grim.

Rector found that in 2004, the most recent year for which figures are available, low-skill households received an average of $32,138 per household — the great majority in the form of means-tested aid and direct benefits. (Rector excluded from that figure the cost of public goods and interest; with those included, he says, each low-skill household receives an average of $43,084.) Against that, Rector found that low-skill households paid an average of $9,689 in taxes. (The biggest chunk of that was the Social Security tax — $2,509 — followed by state and local taxes, consumption taxes, property taxes, and federal income taxes, but Rector counted everything, including highway levies and lottery purchases.) In the final calculation, he found, the average low-skill household received $22,449 more in benefits than it paid in taxes — the $32,138 in benefits, excluding public goods, minus the $9,689 in taxes.
Taking that $22,449, and multiplying it by the 17.7 million low-skill households, Rector found that the total deficit for such households was $397 billion in 2004. "Over the next ten years the total cost of low-skill households to the taxpayer (immediate benefits minus taxes paid) is likely to be at least $3.9 trillion," Rector writes. "This number would go up significantly if changes in immigration policy lead to substantial increases in the number of low-skill immigrants entering the country and receiving services."
From a purely money perspective, it's a powerful argument. At a cost of $22,449 per household per year — well, multiply that by an adult lifespan of 50 years and you have an average lifetime cost to the taxpayer of $1.1 million per unskilled worker. Increase that population with a wave of unskilled immigrants, and you¹re talking a lot of money.
Rector was on Lou Dobbs last week, commenting on the numbers:
ROBERT RECTOR, HERITAGE FOUNDATION: It's not just illegal immigration. It's the legal immigration system as well, is focused on bringing in people without a high school degree. And I would estimate that legal and illegal immigration is costing taxpayer through these low-skill immigrants about $100 billion a year. About a quarter of that total.
Increasingly, the low-scale part of our population is a part that we're deliberately importing. We've imported over 11 million high school dropouts in the last 20 years. They cost the taxpayers a bundle.

Facing Judgement   [4/9/07]
illegal alien Gustavo Reyes Garcia Gustavo Reyes Garcia is definitely a poster boy for inept enforcement regarding dangerous criminal aliens. Before his most recent crime, he had been arrested numerous times in Nashville for serious offenses.

But, as all of Nashville soon learned, Garcia was no ordinary drunken driver. In fact, his criminal record revealed that since 1997, Garcia had been arrested by Metro Police 17 different times. Fourteen of those arrests were for driving-related offenses, including multiple charges of DUI, driving without a license, and fleeing the scene of an accident where injuries had occurred.
When local law enforcement authorities finally woke up to how dangerous the man was, it was too late to prevent a crime that would not have happened if they and Washington had done their jobs. Tragically, a family was decimated when he crashed into the car of Sean and Donna Wilson, killing them both.
His trial is scheduled to begin today in Nashville, and Garcia is charged with driving under the influence (DUI), evading arrest, and aggravated vehicular homicide. Another report says that Garcia will admit guilt in a plea agreement.
Below, Donna and Sean Wilson, who died at the hands of a criminal illegal alien who should have been deported years ago. Sean and Donna Wilson
Update: Garcia took a plea deal, admitted guilt and was sentenced to 25 years in prison. He could be eligible for parole in just 7 1/2 years.

Backlash Fears in Virginia Beach   [4/8/07]
My Vdare.com blog noting how the MSM consistently writes sob stories about how immigrants suffer because of their fears of backlash against them after a crime or terrorist event:

In the media pattern that follows a widely publicized immigrant crime or terrorist arrest, the protocol of editorial elites dictates that attention must to paid to the perp's community members and their sensitive feelings concerning the dreaded — although largely imaginary — backlash against immigrants.
This being America, where citizens are largely fair and law-abiding, generalized retaliation almost never happens against the ethnic group du jour. But in Virginia Beach where two teenaged girls were recently killed by a drunk illegal alien, the media rushed to interview numerous hispanics about their fears of mistreatment from the terrible Americans.
Hey, I have a reasonable fear that my country is being destroyed by open borders. Where's my news story?

On France's Far Right, Tweaking an Image   [4/8/07]
Just how bad is social unrest due to unwise immigration in France? Bad enough to make some Muslims consider voting for Jean Le Pen in the upcoming election. Le Pen is known for tough attitudes about immigration enforcement and law and order generally.

Surprisingly to many here, he is making inroads among some older, more established ethnic Arab and African voters in the suburbs, who say they want to improve security in their neighborhoods and keep out new immigrants.
Although no one stepped forward as a firm Le Pen supporter in Argenteuil on Friday, some residents were not hostile to his message.

Recreation center plans party to bridge ethnic gap   [4/7/07]
Here in California, we are propagandized daily by media and other elites that diversity is the highest good, and a happy-face utopia will occur as soon as the annoying white people are replaced by a rainbow assortment of foreigners.
Reality is quite different indeed. The various ethnic groups that actually comprise diversity often hate each other. Like the Chinese and Mongolians in Oakland, who are not celebrating one another's differences.

OAKLAND — Vinson Lieu recalls walking to his mother's car when a mob of Mongolian youths surrounded him. As his mother watched in horror, he said, they threw him to the ground and beat him. The wrist bones of the Chinese-American teenager are still healing, months after the November assault.
That same month, a large group of Asian youths attacked an 11-year-old Mongolian boy as he left a restaurant with his older sister and two friends. The crowd knocked him off his new bicycle and hit him in the face, he said. They took his bike, too.
Those who know the two boys say they were not involved in any of the violent acts that likely triggered their own mob-style beatings. But they have been ensnared, all the same, in a conflict between a new wave of Mongolian immigrants and other Asian youth.
The fights and bullying that have occurred in and around Oakland's Chinatown have been variously blamed on turf battles and cultural and linguistic barriers. Teenagers say the problems, however they began, have persisted through a never-ending cycle of retaliation — one that has entangled so many Oakland youths of all races and ethnicities.
Somehow Tom Lehrer's '60s song National Brotherhood Week seems appropriate here, although the lyrics could use an update.

Driver drunk in crash that killed director   [4/6/07]
Today's tragic reminder that illegal immigration is not a victimless crime is the deadly crash that took the lives of Hollywood film director Bob Clark and his son Ariel, 22, early Wednesday. They died in a high-speed collision when struck head-on by an SUV driven by a very drunk Mexican.
Clark is best known for the popular holiday film "A Christmas Story." His most recent film was "SuperBabies: Baby Geniuses 2" in 2004. Film director Bob Clark

The 24-year-old man suspected of causing the accident that killed film director Bob Clark and his son had a bloodalcohol level three times the legal limit, authorities said Thursday.
Hector Manuel Velazquez-Nava, a native of Mexico who federal authorities said was in the U.S. illegally, faces possible charges of vehicular manslaughter, driving without a license and driving under the influence of alcohol. He suffered minor injuries in the early Wednesday accident on Pacific Coast Highway and is being held at the Van Nuys Jail. Although bail has been set at $100,000, his undocumented status makes him ineligible for release on bond, police said.
La Times further reports that Velazquez-Nava had been convicted in 2005 of a "prostitution-related charge" and was sentenced to probation, with no deportation.

Permanent drought seen for Southwest by 2050   [4/6/07]
Assuming this forecast is correct, why would we want to add tens of millions more people to the area by continuing permissive immigration? Arizona in particular is already very overpopulated for a dry region.

The driest periods of the last century -- the Dust Bowl of the 1930s and the droughts of the 1950s -- could become the norm in the Southwest United States within decades because of global warming, according to a study released today.
The research suggests that the transformation could already be happening. Much of the region has been in a severe drought since 2000, which the study's analysis of computer climate models shows as the beginning of a long drying period.
The study, published online in the journal Science, predicted a permanent drought throughout the Southwest by 2050.

Briton 'could stage another September 11'   [4/5/07]
DHS chief Chertoff is correctly concerned about the hazard contained in the long-lived visa waiver program which allows any citizen of certain European and other nations to enter the US without an ID check. It's a policy that should have been changed five years ago, but never mind that now.

Mr Chertoff, a former federal prosecutor, said that one of his biggest worries was that "unknown terrorists" - such as most of the 7/7 bombers, who were British citizens with no criminal record or intelligence traces - could use the visa waiver scheme to enter and attack America.
Britain is among 27 countries that participate in the scheme, which allows visitors to enter the US without a visa for up to 90 days. About 18 million people visit America every year under this programme.
Richard Reid, the "shoe bomber" who attempted to blow up a transatlantic flight in 2001, was a British citizen travelling under the visa waiver scheme.
Funny how Chertoff doesn't want to trust US security in the hands of Britain, but is fine with letting the Mexican narco-state have a similar responsibility under the Security and Prosperity Partnership Of North America.
    More Chertoff cluelessness here...
"Our Muslim population is better educated and economically better off than the average American. So, from a standpoint of mobility in society, it's a successful immigrant population. To some degree, the whole country is a country of immigrants, and therefore there's no sense that we have insiders or outsiders. In some countries [in Europe], you had an influx of people that came in as a colonial legacy and may have always have felt, to some extent, that they were viewed as second-class citizens, and they've tended to impact and be kind of clustered in some areas."
Actually, immigrants account for 12 percent of the total population of America, so that means 88 percent of us are homegrown citizens and not immigrants by any definition. We're a nation of citizens.

Low-skilled exact a burden   [4/5/07]
The Heritage Foundation has crunched the numbers and has issued a study showing the astounding cost of low-skilled immigrants on the overburdened American taxpayer.

Using data from 2004, the report shows the average household headed by a low-skilled worker paid $9,689 in taxes but received $32,138 in benefits a year. The more than $22,000 difference is the "tax burden" which rises to $1.1 million over the worker's lifetime.
Mr. Bush has called for legalizing the estimated 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens in the United States, and for a new program to allow more foreign workers in the future.
He faces opposition from many congressional Republicans who say allowing illegal aliens to remain amounts to amnesty. They also want Mr. Bush to focus on better immigration enforcement before beginning a new guest-worker program.
Chief among the critics is Rep. Brian P. Bilbray, chairman of the Immigration Reform Caucus, who hailed the study.
"The Heritage Foundation report proves what we already know, that illegal immigration is a drain to the American people," the California Republican said. "At more than $22,000 a year, it's like having the American taxpayers buy everyone who doesn't have a high school diploma a brand new Ford Mustang convertible."

50 Fastest-Growing Metro Areas Concentrated in West and South   [4/5/07]
The Census has released its survey for metropolitan growth from 2000 to 2006. The population growth in some areas has been truly stunning.

According to population estimates released today for all metro areas by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Atlanta metro area gained 890,000 residents from April 1, 2000, to July 1, 2006, the largest numerical gain of the nation's 361 metro areas.
This Georgia metro area (Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta) was the nation's ninth largest as of July 1, 2006 with a population of 5.1 million. Overall, six metro areas each gained at least 500,000 people between 2000 and 2006.
Dallas-Fort Worth had the second largest numeric increase at 842,000, and totaled about 6 million people. Houston (with an increase of 825,000), Phoenix (787,000) and Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario, Calif. (771,000) rounded out the top five metro area gainers over the time period. The five metro areas experiencing the greatest numeric change between 2000 and 2006 were in the South or West. [...]
St. George, in the southwestern part of Utah, was the fastest-growing metro area between 2000 and 2006, with a growth of 39.8 percent to total 126,000 on July 1, 2006. Rounding out the top five were Greeley, Colo. (31 percent); Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Fla. (29.6 percent); Bend, Ore. (29.3 percent); and Las Vegas (29.2 percent).
For a nicely laid out chart of the data, see here.
Naturally, some papers are trying lamely to portray explosive growth as a good thing and spin other fables, like the hopeless Miami Herald:
Without immigrants pouring into the nation's big metro areas, places such as New York, Los Angeles and Boston would be shrinking as native-born Americans move farther out of the cities.
On the contrary, citizens are moving out of their neighborhoods to escape the immigrants and live in a recognizable American community.

Mexification and the Future of the United States   [4/5/07]
Fjordman occasionally comments on the American scene, and he remains underwhelmed by the bad policies coming out of Washington regarding immigration and the lack of seriousness generally.

The United States may well have signed its own death warrant as a country when it decided to be a "universal" nation. There is no such thing. Either you abandon that idea or it will kill your country and kill the American dream. It is pretty bad when California, which has attracted people from all over the United States for 150 years and has been the economic engine not just of the US, but of the world for generations, now starts becoming a region where educated, dynamic people leave because they can no longer stand living there.

A nurse's cough turns into a public health crisis in the Bronx   [4/4/07]
In these days of skyrocketing healthcare costs, HMO executives would like to hire more foreign nurses who will work cheap and won't demand a lot of benefits.
However, American patients would be far better served for hospitals to pay citizen nurses what they are worth, and avoid foreigners with their poor English skills and tuberculosis-filled lungs.

For three weeks beginning in January, about 700 workers and patients at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, including 238 infants, were exposed to tuberculosis by an infected nurse.
During that time, after the unidentified, foreign-born woman had developed a cough, she continued to report for regular shifts in the maternity ward and the nursery at the facility. When she finally reported her cough to a doctor, he noticed that she'd earlier tested positive for latent TB. A chest X-ray showed that the disease had turned infectious.
Following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, the nurse was isolated in her home while she began a drug regimen. The hospital also notified the city's Bureau of Tuberculosis Control, which sent a team of epidemiologists into action. They marshaled months of hospital records and tried to track down every person who had crossed paths with the infectious nurse.
On March 15, when almost two months had passed since the investigation began and 271 potential victims still remained at-large, the city's Department of Health reached out to local media in an effort to track those patients down. More than 100 have come forward since then, and seven people in total have tested positive for latent tuberculosis, which they developed after being exposed to the infectious nurse.
A friend here in California is about to start a nursing job and she was required to take a TB test as part of her pre-employment screening. What's wrong with New York? Why was someone who had "earlier tested positive for latent TB" allowed to work in a hospital?
Unfortunately, as I discovered when researching The X-Ray Files, the healthcare profession is dangerously riddled with politcally correct thinking.

New California Emergency Preparedness Web Site Debuts   [4/4/07]
Here's a language diversity update from the left coast: the state's new Emergency Website is translated into 13 languages.

SACRAMENTO California's new director of the Department of Public Health, Dr. Mark Horton, kicked off Public Health Week this week by launching a new Web site dedicated to emergency preparedness, Be Prepared California.
The Web site will provide information in 12 languages other than English: Arabic, Armenian, Cambodian, Chinese, Farsi, Hmong, Korean, Lao, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese, according to California Department of Health Services spokesman Ken August. It is designed to proved basic information such as how to develop a disaster plan or prepare an emergency supply kit.
As I've noted elsewhere: When I am the only English-speaking person riding the bus I am not celebrating diversity, but hoping that the next earthquake does not happen until after I get off.

Murder reveals a dark side of arranged marriages   [4/3/07]
Canada made a conscious decision a few decades ago to become multicultural, and have they ever! The latest is about an Indian man who murdered his arranged wife in Arizona because she wasn't compliant enough.

Police say Indian citizen Avtar Grewal, 32, flew in last week to the Valley from Vancouver, Canada, where was living, killed his estranged, 30-year-old wife, Navneet Kaur, late Thursday in her Ahwatukee home, then fled to India.
Since late October, four Indo-Canadian women near Vancouver have been killed, reportedly by their husbands, the Canadian paper reported. They were a pregnant teacher burned to death, the mother of an infant son, stabbed to death, a woman fatally shot in the face by her estranged husband who killed himself and the most recent, a mother stabbed to death with her two toddler daughters nearby. In at least two of the slayings, the women's husbands have been charged.
More than 37 percent of married women in India were victims of physical or sexual abuse by their husbands, according to a 2007 National Family Health Survey there.

Suspect in crash that killed 2 had alcohol-related convictions   [4/3/07]

Below, Tessa Tranchant, 16, left, and Allison Kunhardt, 17, were killed late Friday, evidently by a drunk-driving illegal alien. Tessa Tranchant and Allison Kunhardt killed by drunk illegal alien
According to grieving father Ray Tranchant, his daughter Tessa and her best friend Allison Kunhardt, "were just sitting at the light, strapped in their seat belts. They were just doing what they were supposed to be doing."
But obeying the law is not enough protection any more, since drunk-driving illegal aliens are making the roads a far more hazardous place. The accused, illegal alien Alfredo Ramos, was apparently so blotto that he doesn't even remember the accident.

Afterward, [Ramos] told him he had no memory of the crash. He learned from authorities that he had killed two people, his brother said.
Ramos, who was born in Mexico of Guatemalan parents, has been in the United States for about seven years.
Ramos had a prior DUI conviction in Chesapeake this year, so if Rep. Sue Myrick's Scott Gardner Act had been law, he would have been immediately deported for being a drunk-driving illegal alien. The legislation, originally written in 2005, has been resubmitted in this Congress as HR 1355.

British town votes to change a church to a mosque   [4/2/07]
This is how a country gets taken over by a hostile enemy in the 21st century — building by building, block by block, by immigrants who intend to turn Europe Islamic. Bear in mind that a 2006 poll found 40 percent of Muslims residing in Britain want sharia law there, so the writing is on the wall for all to see.
When immigration is invasion, then immigration is war.

CLITHEROE, England — On a chilly night this winter, this pristine town in some of Britain's most untouched countryside voted to allow a former Christian church to become a mosque.
The narrow vote by the municipal authorities marked the end of a bitter struggle by the tiny Muslim population to establish a place of worship, one that will put a mosque in an imposing stone Methodist church that had been used as a factory since its congregation dwindled away 40 years ago.
The battle underscored Britain's unease with its Muslim minority, and particularly the infiltration of terrorist cells among the faithful, whose devotion has challenged an increasingly secular Britain's sense of itself.

In Belgium, Catholic priests have allowed Muslims to desecrate cathedrals by turning them into filthy flophouses.

Gingrich: Bilingual Classes Teach 'Ghetto' Language   [4/1/07]
Newt has come a long way since he supported statehood for Puerto Rico, which would have brought a Spanish-speaking state into the Union.

"The government should quit mandating that various documents be printed in any one of 700 languages depending on who randomly shows up" to vote, Gingrich said. The former Georgia congressman, who is considering seeking the GOP presidential nomination in 2008, made the comments in a speech to the National Federation of Republican Women.
"The American people believe English should be the official language of the government. . . . We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of the country and they learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto," Gingrich said, drawing cheers from the crowd of more than 100.
"Citizenship requires passing a test on American history in English. If that's true, then we do not have to create ballots in any language except English," he said.

Tech firms scramble for visas   [4/1/07]
Bill Gates with Mexican flag Cheap labor guru Bill Gates and his little imitators multitask as they send out job offers to foreigners while complaining about the annoying paperwork and numerical limits on H-1b visas — unlimited immigration would be so much easier!

While most Americans are relaxing today, hiring managers at Microsoft, Oracle, Intel and other high-tech companies will be mailing applications to U.S. immigration officials seeking permission to hire temporary foreign employees under a controversial work permit called an H1-B visa.
Since 1990, the H1-B program has allowed U.S. companies to bring in a limited number of foreigners to work in "specialty occupations," which range from rocket science to fashion modeling.
The current H1-B quota is 65,000, but a series of exemptions make that a soft number. In 2005, the most recent year for which data are available, the U.S. approved 116,927 H1-B visas.
Of course there are plenty of American workers available, but they expect to receive a wage that is commensurate with their experience.
